Barth seems to be inferring that her letters about what would happen when they got out... that they'd open a bed and breakfast, and live in the woods... and that she was saying it was all she could hold onto... that she was talking about suicide... and that Seth then wrote that elaborate, fantastical escape plan... to soothe her...

It doesn't appear to be all that easy to get into the Foreign Legion... Bergdahl was rejected.
