That testing, in addition to further investigation and DNA testing in 2023, helped investigators conclude that Ronney James Lee was responsible for Kempton’s death, the release said.

Lee died in 2005 at the age of 45 due to acute cocaine intoxication. He was 21 when Kempton was killed, the attorney general said.

If Lee were still alive, authorities would have sought charges of first-degree murder against him, Formella said.

The DNA samples that helped link Lee to the case were found on Kempton’s body, a pillowcase and cigarette butt left at the scene, according to an investigative report from the attorney general

I was just about to post this here, but nothing about the second case! Bittersweet but at least one is solved! It's just not clear exactly what happened although we may never know...

A little more than a year after Kempton was found dead in her apartment, Portsmouth Police found Tammy Little, 20, murdered in a Maplewood Avenue apartment.

Little, like Kempton, was a Portsmouth Beauty School student. Also, like Kempton she was killed as a result of massive head injuries.

“We’re not answering these questions today, but I hope today’s news will help lead to developments in other cases,” Formella said.

Little’s case remains unsolved for now, but the Cold Case Unit and Portsmouth Police are still working.

“We never give up on these victims,” Formella said.

I would agree - all NH authorities recently refused to speak with me about Laura's case, and it was intimated that they are awaiting something specific - I would wager test results linking the same offender to Tammy.
