NH NH - Laureen Rahn, 14, Manchester, 27 April 1980

  • #361
I just found this the other day while looking for more podcasts about Laureen's case, of which there are very few. I had never heard of this podcasts before, but apparently they did an earlier episode about Laureen's case that I haven't listened to yet.

This follow-up episode (released September 5 of this year) contains an interview with Laureen's friend Michelle who was also 14 at the time and hung out with her for the last time just weeks before she vanished. The information Michelle gives, if true, sheds a whole new light on the disappearance and fills in several holes in the case we've all been wondering about.

Ohh, thank you for sharing. I look forward to giving this a listen tomorrow.

Where do I even start...

Went in for my weekly checkup on Laureen's thread and saw the new podcast, dropped everything I was doing, made popcorn and went straight into it. I was absolutely shocked and my jaw kept dropping throughout the whole episode. If we assume everything Michelle said on that podcast is true it definitely made me reconsider my opinions and theories. Some of the key points:

1. The family situation - I must admit I didn't believe Laureen's family was disfunctional to the degree Michelle described it. Her dad actually being in NH all along and the fact they actually had contact is fairly interesting to me and I would surely like to know more about their relationship. Next, I was apparently very wrong in my initial assumption that Laureen and Judith were on good terms. I fully believed that any potential conflict between them was overblown by law enforcment and anyone else who pushed for the runaway theory. The detail with the aunts fighting and what was going on between them and the man called Bob is quite horrifying but I'll get to Bob later. Judith selling Laureen's bike so soon after the disappearance is a can of worms in itself.

2. The friends - another wrong assumption as I believed Laureen knew Kristyn for far longer (an assumption based on me believing she had a healthy relationship with her mom). If she really did know Kristyn for just around two weeks it surely makes whatever happened that night far more suspicious. Good to know the male friend's name at last, too. Regarding him, it was very interesting when Michelle remarked how his behavior led people to consider him taking his life a possibility. Once again, would like more information on that as well but I lean into him taking his life not having any connection to the case. Lastly, the interview with Michelle, in my opinion, greatly solidifies the notion that there definitely was a second male present at the apartment that night.

3. The phone calls - the detail with a cousin working as a truck driver as well as the calls being night absent from any police reports lead me to believe that the phone calls from CA are in fact a red herring in this case.

4. Bob - perhaps my personal highlight from this interview, I just have a gut feeling the man has at least some involvement in whatever happened to Laureen.

5. I was very glad to hear any connections to other cases and/or potential perpetrators be largely discarded (thank God I'm not alone in thinking Laureen looks nothing like some of the girls she's often compared to appearance-wise).

6. The Unsolved Mysteries bit shook me to my core.

After taking everything into account, the prevailing theories in my opinion are:
1. The OD theory - I've always been on board with this one, especially now that Laureen apparently knew the friends she had come over for a very short time. From the chance of her overdosing in the first place, to the probability of the others to decide to dispose of her following the OD, this theory should absolutely be on the table in my opinion.
2. Taken and murdered the same night/shortly after - this is where I believe that, if he's really inolved, Bob comes in. The man was obviously shady since he did what he did with Judith and the aunts. Who knows what else could cross his mind and he could've very easily had access to a key just like Michelle said. Regardless of who murdered Laureen, if they did they're either very lucky or very smart since no remains had ever been found.
3. Human trafficking - while I think the other theories are stronger if everything Michelle said is true, I still think there's some weight to this one, especially with Judith's past shady connections and marriages (man who owned a restaurant, turned strip club). This theory is also still my personal favorite so there's bias present as well.

One last thing, I was bummed when Michelle said Sam hadn't responded to her most recent messages in 2025. I would really like to get in contact with Sam, lend him a hand or, if he really wants to distance himself from this case I'd gladly take the investigation over. I completely understand and share the infatuation with the case and his commitment, this podcast/interview only further deepening it. That being said, I have high hopes that we're close to finding out the truth.

Yes, I definitely think Michelle's accounts are somewhat embellished (either intentionally or unintentionally). Some of it — both the info itself and Michelle's eager tone — made it come across as gossip or "tea spilling". Part of me would be very curious as to how she learned the information about this "Bob" sleeping with all the aunts and Judith (in an article, Judith was said to be one of eleven kids, mostly daughters). Did Laureen tell her this? Was it a rumor around town? Keep in mind that Michelle was 14 just like Laureen and hadn't known her that long before she vanished. She would have been seeing these things through a "child's eyes" so to speak. It does sound, however, like Judith wasn't exactly a stable figure in her daughter's life and made very questionable choices. The sale of Laureen's bike a month later floored me. Like...why? Why would that even be on her mother's mind at all to do this? If true, this isn't a case of "everyone grieves differently" but more like "WTF, Judith?".

As a lifelong Unsolved Mysteries fan, I always thought this case would have made a great segment. All the elements are there — the possible party, the mysterious phone calls, the early 80s timeframe. My jaw dropped when I heard about that bit. If I understood this correctly, it was a tape of a phone message from the Unsolved Mysteries producers to Judith asking about a possible segment that Judith simply never responded to.

I've looked online and found no Sam from the UK researching this case. Perhaps he never really went public with his findings or, as you said, tried to distance himself from the case entirely. I can't say I blame him if even half of what Michelle says about the family is true. They seem like a dysfunctional bunch who seem to have done very little over the past 45 years to keep this case in the news. I'd love to see the contents of the Dropbox he sent to Michelle, particularly the Unsolved Mysteries call.

I'm now inclined to believe Judith knew more about her daughter's disappearance that any of us initially suspected. I find it interesting that according to Michelle, Judith's boyfriend (who was apparently a squash player and NOT a pro tennis star! Why was everything in this case so exaggerated beyond belief?) stopped seeing her immediately after the disappearance.

I hope you are at some point able to make contact with Sam.

I have not listened to the podcast yet, but it astonishes me to hear that the mom was involved with someone suspicious named "Bob". I have always considered Terry Peder Rasmussen's involvement in this case to be a nonstarter since it does not match his MO...but he was, in fact, living in Manchester when Laureen disappeared and using the alias "Bob Evans".

About that photo. I think it was prior to their coming to NH , that is someplace prior to 1979 // 1980
Well, Marie turned 7 in December 1978, so that would probably fit. They think it was her 7th or 8th birthday based on the amount of candles on her cake.

God, what a tragedy. This happy little girl surrounded by friends celebrating what might have her last birthday.

As for Laureen, I lean towards thinking she left her apartment real quick because she thought she was going to someone's car for either a quick chat or maybe smoking some pot (probably didn't want to smoke it in her apartment because of the smell) and things went haywire.

Hi there, submitted to the doe network and they noted they have not compared Laureens case to that of NAMUS case 7477 Doe Network 431UFMD, and are doing so now, the height and age ranges etc match, there is a lot of artist renditions of the doe each looking different from the other, but the latest rendition from NCMEC bares resemblance. However Doe was found in Maryland, I’m not American so distance between states is confusing for me, unfortunately it appears side profile photos of Laureen to compare noses are hard to come by via googling which would be very helpful due to Does easily distinguished nose shape.

What was his whereabouts at the time Laureen’s mother got the strange calls from California?

I don't think it's an unreasonable distance from New Hampshire to Maryland. People who live on the East Coast regularly drive up and down the coast. Major highways connect everything north to south (traveling east to west can be more difficult depending on your location, hence the saying "you can't get there from here!"). It's about an 8 hour drive today, I think it was similar in the early 1980s. I was in college in Connecticut then and many students were from all over the East Coast, north and south.

Please keep us posted about anything you hear about your submission. Laureen is a fairly local case for me, I'm in Northern Vermont, just a few hours away.

Do keep us posted!

I think I've already seen this particular Jane Doe brought up as potentially being Laureen, so it's good that we'll finally get closure on that. Reading the information about the Jane Doe, it can go either way. I'm really interested what's going to come out of this. Maryalnd is sadly in fact a plausible location for her body to end up if she had been murdered.

BTW, I'm slowly working on making a website dedicated to Laureen's case where I intend to summarize all information available so far. Hoping I can get that live soon.

Please let us know when it’s live it will be really useful to have lots of information in one place

also in vermont. i have never ruled out distance in this case due to the spread of calls supposedly from Laureen and sightings. California, Boston, Alaska.

Map of reported sightings and phone calls (supposedly Laureen) I made.

Map I uploaded may help with distances/scale of states.

I think one of the first "order of business" should be to determine what are red herrings and not, don't exactly know how we'd go about that. I think there are alot of strange hearsay details (phone calls, lightbulbs, possible connections with a "bob" in the family discussed in podcast) that if we can eliminate and confirm certain things would make this more clear.

And guess what! When I went to college in Connecticut, I lived in Massachusetts. After college, I moved to North Carolina for a job (followed my fiance, that's another story! 🙃). Moved back to Massachusetts when that didn't work out. Went to grad school in California in 1989. Moved back to Connecticut for a job in 1994. In the mid-90s moved to Northern Vermont (right on the Canadian border).

My point is I drove back and forth to all these places without a second thought. Now my family is spread out all over the eastern and southeastern part of the country. Lots of road trips!

I agree, about "without a second thought". I often think that folks just do not realize how small the New England states are... In some ways , ALL of New England could just be the state of New England.

But this case is new to me..... are there any family members who have been vocal in recent years???/
