Once again, everyone she was known to know has been accounted for. You're making up someone, who there is no proof existed and saying it's a more likely scenario than getting picked up by someone she didn't know. And saying her family should go that route. Smart.

As for walking off and dying, there was snow on the ground and no footprints leading from the scene. Maybe an alien ship snatched her up, that's just as likely as your original post.

You really are taking this too personally. We are all just throwing theories around at this point. There are three main theories. She died on her own. She was killed by some who knew her. She was killed by a local person. There is absolutely no evidence to support any of them. It pretty much just comes down to people's ideas and what they think is likely.

I lived in the dorms just like Maura did and people will have a lot of casual acquaintances that few people will know about. Chances are slim to none that we know about all the acquaintances Maura had living as a college student on campus.

Not personal at all, I'm talking known facts and you're making up stuff to promote a ridiculous theory based on nothing.

And suggesting the family should ignore the known and chase your unknown is just plain absurd.

You aren't talking facts. There are no facts in this case regarding her disappearance. The last fact we have is that she was in her car and denied help from the bus driver. Absolutely nothing is known after that point other than she was no longer in the vicinity of her car. Everything after that point is a 100% speculation.

Saying she committed suicide or had shady company in her life (which she seemingly did) is just as valid as the local dirtbag theory. People have really just grabbed on to the local dirtbag theory because it's what her family wants to believe.

To be honest though it doesn't sound like her family knew her all that well either. Most college age kids keep a lot of things from their families.

BF was 1500 miles away, ridiculous to even bring him into this.
Excuse me? Sorry, your response to me (and others) feel a bit needlessly aggressive — I’m saying he’s a shady character, not directly responsible. Feel free to reference my past posts on this thread.

Theory by who? Everyone she was known to know was accounted for.

Some of these conspiracy theories (and that's exactly what they are) are absurd.

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's a possibility. A conspiracy theory would be to claim she never left Massachussets in the first place and that it wasn't her at the accident scene in New Hampshire.

Yes. Her being involved with someone else that we don't know about is a possibility. Her trying to escape the police and dying of the elements is a possibility. Those things are just as likely as the local dirtbag theory.

Those last 2 sentences reminded me of an old saying; "live in secret, die in secret". I have grandkids in their 20's who are loathe to share anything going on in their lives because it makes them feel "independent". If anything were to happen, we'd have the same situation on our hands, no doubt.

I guarantee that has played a major part in why this case has become such a mystery. Because so little was actually known about her personal life. Outside of her bf we only really know about a few people she supposedly partied with one night.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Maura was last seen on February 9, 2004. Maura was a junior nursing student at the UMass-Amherst campus. Before she disappeared, she called to inquire about vacation accommodations in Stowe, Vermont, as well as a condominium rental in Bartlett where she had previously stayed with her family, although she did not make any reservations over the phone. She also performed a MapQuest search of the Berkshires and of Burlington, VT. She emailed her professors to tell them she was going home for the week because of a death in the family, but there was no death in the family. She loaded her textbooks into her car, withdrew $280 from an ATM, bought about $40 worth of alcohol, and headed north.
Around 7:00 p.m. that evening, Maura crashed her car into a snowbank on Route 112 in New Hampshire, several miles from the Vermont border. The collision caused her air bags to deploy and a small crack in the windshield. Police say a witness offered to help, but Maura refused and told the witness not to call police - that she had already called AAA. The witness knew this couldn't be true because there was no cellular service in that area. The witness went home and called 911. He told officials that Maura seemed to be intoxicated but not injured. When emergency workers arrived, Maura had vanished, and most of her belongings were left behind in her car. Missing were her cell phone and credit and bank cards, which have not been used since.
Police brought out helicopters, ground crews to search the area, and dogs. The investigators couldn't find any footprints left in the snow and dogs lost her scent about 100 yards away from the scene.
Maura has had no contact with family members since her disappearance.''

Has "The Witness" mentioned in the post directly above this one been vetted???

The witness mentioned is the bus driver. That's already well known.

There is as much evidence that she was killed by a local dirtbag as there is that someone she knew killed her.

If you think theories that someone she knew killed her is absurd than the local dirtbag theory is equally as absurd.

We know next to nothing about Maura's personal life. She very easily could have been involved with other guys aside from her bf (cool kids who live in dorms do have a tendency to be promiscuous). And knowing the type of individual her bf turned out to be chances are if she was involved with someone else they would have been a little shady as well.
Students that live in dormitories have a tendency to be promiscuous?

Where do you get this idea from?
