I guess I should also post what I think happened given what I currently know/believe:

MM was obviously going through a tough time. I know firsthand that "trading down" colleges can be stressful and a hit to self esteem. Add in managing a long-distance relationship, even a loving one (a short/no-distance loving relationship can even be tough at times...), car shopping with dad (I was trying to figure out if I could make a bike work after a few days of this myself.), and demanding school requirements, and I can completely see needing to get a way for a little while. I completely agree with the idea that she wanted to go be in the mountains where she felt comfortable, but didn't really settle on where she was going until she got close. (Two and a half hours travel is plenty of time to decide.)

Prior Behavior
In regards to possible credit card fraud: Possibly true. Too much has been redacted from the information posted on JR's blog for me to really make a call on this one. If true, I don't think that it necessarily signals an eating disorder or even "spiraling out of control." From the receipts shown, the purchases seem to occur over a 1-2 week period. Even with a meal plan, there were times I probably the same in a similar amount of time due to 1am calzones being too good to pass up. Using someone else's credit card is serious, but I feel that she was young enough at the time to still do something dumb without giving it a lot of thought. When I was the same age, I stole silverware, glasses, and salt shakers almost every time I went to a restaurant.

In regards to a potential problem with alcohol: I just don't see it. Friends of mine who are very successful frequently buy/consume more alcohol than we know about with MM (and I'm truly not worried about them). I haven't been to ABC, but it sounds like a type of restaurant I frequent with my friends when I get over to Boston, at which I always get a beer or two to be social. I just don't see her drinking to excess here. We don't know how much she drank at the dorm party, but even if it was a lot, we don't even know that this was a common occurrence or when she stopped prior to driving her father's car. (I've read news articles stating that she left the party around 2:30am and that accident occurred (possibly?) just a few minutes drive away at 3:33 am.) Why buy so much alcohol if you're going to be alone? Mix a few drinks while you're thinking about life, save the rest for later. (I don't know what the specific rules were in 2004, but UMass is not a dry campus.)

What happened in NH?
I give highest probability to abduction by an opportunist, maybe close to the accident, but probably a little further away. I agree that she probably took off from the car, probably a little scared and dazed by the event, in order to get better cell service and hope that BA abided by her wishes. (Reason for taking alcohol: To lessen the possibility of her appearing to have been committing a DUI, regardless of whether or not she was, just in case the police did arrive. I worry about police thinking I'm doing something wrong all the time, and I've never so much as gotten a parking ticket.) Why not go back to the store or seek out a house? Reluctance to interact with unfamiliar locals and sheer stubbornness. (Anyone willing to work two jobs while in school probably thinks they can handle themselves.) Why lock the car? Habit, I do it myself. Succumb to the elements? Doubt it. It just wasn't that cold that night (Low of 28?). Also, search of the immediate area, including helicopter search didn't turn up any sign of her (Daily Collegian, 2/17/2004). (I also recall reading them able to find moose prints, but not human foot prints, in the snow, but I forget which source that was from.) Meeting secret boyfriend/running away to [location x]? Again, probably not. I don't see almost 9 years going by without investigators being able to notice that someone else connected to her life has gone missing as well. Could there really be zero trace of her having a relationship(/friendship) with someone and having that someone be entirely unknown to her family? No email/phone records? No unaccounted for gifts/notes? Not even a confided secret with her sisters? I also don't see her doing this solo and maintaining the secret for so long. She appeared too close with family and her high school friends to not contact someone. Suicide? Probably a higher chance of this than a long-term runaway situation, but I don't see this being the case either.

Whatever happened that night, I hope she is either found soon or is living a life that makes her happy.

I have nothing to add but I just wanted to say that this is a great post and I think you may be on to something. This case is one of those that is a true mystery. I hope we find out the truth some day.

Apparently I missed it at first, but an accident report for the first accident was posted on JR's blog (Murray 002-1.pdf in the documents section) that indicates that the accident was at that T-intersection.

The report claims that she hit the guard rail head-on. I'm not saying that I disbelieve the report, but it certainly seems very strange that a young girl would be allowed to leave the scene of that type of accident if there were any signs of intoxication. Remember that news articles report that this accident caused between $8000 and $10000 damage to a car that cost ~$19000 (Based upon 2005 model-year MSRP, which I was able to locate using the Internet Wayback Machine.).

Are individuals allowed to request accident reports that they are not involved with? It seems as though $10 is the standard charge for retrieving a report, and I don't mind doing this if I am legally able to, if only to independently verify a pre-existing source.

Welcome aboard Riot!!!!!!!!!!

I have been following this case for a long time and finally decided to take a more active approach right around the same time, James Renner began to get the word out about his blog and his pursuit to find out what happend to maura.

I had worked with James (behind the scenes) and I went to the campus of UMASS and took those photos that you noticed on his blog at the T-Interesection.

I too am shocked that maura wasn't locked up after that wreck. My only theory on that (opinion) is that she likely had a major meltdown at the accident scene and the responding officer took pity on her.

Utimately, I believe her actions in the days leading up to her disappearance are highly relevant to what happened to her.

I am one who believes that maura went off into the mountains and took her own life, but that is just a theory and I realize that plenty of other theories could apply to her circumstances.

One thing that does haunt me is the 112Dirtbag/Beagle angle... the fact that this guy had a video of a lift ticket very close to where she disappeared with a date just a few days afterwards. I can't get that fact out of my head for some reason. There's just no way that is a coincidence, and where could he get something like that?

Bugs me too. I hope LE checked that out. He seems obsessed with this case as well. The evidence is in all his off based posts on Maura's disappearance over the years.

Hi Scoops! I was hoping you'd show up, as I actually realized that you were the one to take those pictures after I posted. I'm curious: When you worked with Renner, were you able to confirm that the accident report was valid and that was the true intersection? Every news report I've read refers to that incident occurring on Route 9.

From reading back posts, I can say that I respect your opinions, but my opinion of the "first accident" is that she was not visibly impaired at that time. I would think that police officers in a college town would be immune to "meltdowns." (They probably get these once very couple of weeks?)

Also, if you can't confirm the validity of the accident report posted on JR's blog, do you know if this is something I can obtain as an individual? (I'm not doubting that accidents occur at this intersection; at this time there are clear skid marks heading straight for the guardrail, which is bent. I merely want to reconcile your pictures with what has been reported in news articles.)

Thanks!

Riot,
I actually was only visiting UMASS for the first time in my life when I went in the summer of 2011 and wasn't all that familiar with the area.

I am 100 percent certain that location is accurate.

In maribeth Conway's five-part series done for the Whitman-hanson Express, she mentions the wreck happening along Route 9.

However, the very same paper a few years later posted an article with more detail about that particular wreck and there it was mentioned that the wreck happened at the intersection of N. Maple and N. hadley.

It took awhile for me to find it, simply because everyone I asked about it at UMASS didn't know N. Hadley was a street. Most everyone I ran across referred to it as Massachusetts Ave., instead. But I have verified and they are one in the same street. the majority of the street is Massachusetts ave. When you get down close to the T-Intersection it switches to N. Hadley rd.

I have the accident report myself, but I think you can print it off of James Renner's site as well.

Ok, thank you, scoops! I must not have come across the newer article yet. Printing the report from James Renner's site wouldn't do me any good, because I wanted to make sure that it was real, but if you say that you're 100% sure of its accuracy, that's good enough for me. =)

Other plans I have to check up on various bits of info in this case:

A photo posted on the Maura Murray Missing site shows her UMass parking sticker, so I'm going to do a walk from the Southwest Residential Area to her designated parking lot and continue on in my car to the location of the Vasi hit-and-run accident. I don't think that she was involved, but I don't think it would hurt to get an idea of how long she might have been gone from the security desk that night if she were involved, either.

I remember reading an article attributing the report of "a male smoking a cigarette" in her car in NH to a red light on her cell phone. Information on the MMM site claims that her phone was a Spring Samsung SPH-A620. From the pictures I can find on the internet, I don't notice a text/call waiting light like the described light would likely be, so I might get one off EBay for closer inspection. (They're pretty cheap if you don't care too much about them being functional.)

Now, both of these areas are probably irrelevant to her actual disappearance, but I keep seeing them come up in my readings, so I think it's worth doing a little digging for such a minimal investment in time/money.

For anyone interested, this is a currently active link to the article scoops mentions, Whitman/Hanson Express, dated August 23, 2007:

http://www.whitmanhansonexpress.com...mpshire-ag-releases-info-on-maura-murray.html

"At 3:30 a.m., according to the Hadley police, Maura crashed her father's 2004 Toyota Corolla at the intersection of North Maple Street and North Hadley Road. Officer Mark Ruddock took the report."

Thus corroborating the accident report posted on JR's blog, which began in 2011.

Hopefully this is of interest to someone and not completely off-base:

In various places, I've read some put a connection between MM and the Vasi accident, proposing that her crying and needing to leave her security shift early in the early morning of Friday, February 6 was a result of this incident. As it only took a minimal investment of time, I timed myself taking a potential route of MM if this assertion were true. In this picture of Maura's car, linked on the Maura Murray Missing website, the parking decal shows that she was assigned to park in UMass Lot 12. (Today's parking decals look very similar to the one shown from 2003-2004.) A 2005 Parking Map verifies that Lot 12 hasn't moved. I feel that MM would have parked here prior to her shift, so as to avoid having to move the car before morning to avoid ticketing.

Here are my waypoints and travel times:

Walk from Southwest Residential Area to Closest Spot in Lot 12: 8:40.
Walk to where I had parked in Lot 12: 10:15.
(Walked fast, started from across Massachusetts Ave from dorms so as to negate waiting for traffic.)

Drive time back to start point: 2:15

Drive time from Southwest Residential Area to Mattoon Street 2:45
(No more than 10 seconds spent waiting at red lights.)

Now, using the given times, let's do some total travel time calculations, assuming that a person were to leave the dorm and do nothing other than drive to Mattoon Street and return:

Dorm-Mattoon-Dorm (assuming ability to park directly at dorm): 5:30
Dorm-Lot12(closest)-Mattoon-Dorm: 16:25
Dorm-Lot12(random)-Mattoon-Dorm: 18:00
Dorm-Lot12(closest)-Mattoon-Lot12(closest)-Dorm: 27:20
Dorm-Lot12(random)-Mattoon-Lot12(random)-Dorm: 30:30

While this is hardly a definitive analysis of what a timeline that has MM being the driver of that car would look like, I feel safe assuming that MM would have had to be missing from her position somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes, at minimum, if this were the case. Surely someone would have noticed her absence.

Good Stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And isn't it a shame that we are still talking about this Maura/Vasi angle.

This could literally be "white noise" but admittingly enough, I have worked pretty hard at trying to exclude her involvement in vasi's hit and run (by gathering up evidence) and I have been about as successful as Fox News has been (over the last 4 years) at trying to get the president dumped.

A couple of things of my own notes after looking at what you have provided.

First, when i was at UMASS, I thought the vasi hit and run angle was laughable at best, therefore I did not do much in the way of looking into it, other than literally stumbling upon the intersection at which the hit and run took place.

But I began to dig into this angle in the recent months and it is alarming enough to me that I only seem to be adding more evidence that she MAY have been involved in the hit and run then I am subtracting evidence.

I will break it down more in next post.

Maura/Vasi hit and run angle:

First to the KNOWNS

Maura's shift that night at Melville Dorm was from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

I have 100 percent verified this fact.

One of the documents I have in my possession details the specific job duties of both Maura's job (Dorm Monitor) and her supervisor (Area Supervisor). Among their duties, the Area Supervisor is responsible for providing break relief to all the dorm monitors throughout the night.

Maura was working the second longest shift a dorm monitor can work at UMASS. I would naturally assume (not factual but pretty close) that maura had break times that night, maybe one 30 minute break, maybe two 10 or 20 minute breaks).

Maura's car did not neccessarily have to be in her normal parking spot.

I believe (and Riot you can probably confirm this) that if you are a dorm monitor at umass, they have parking spots reserved for you in front of the dorm you are supervising. Even though maura lived right next door to the dorm she was working at that thursday night, if she knew in advance she was going to be going out for coffee or something to eat during a break, then it would seem logical that she would go ahead and bring her car to the parking lot just inches away from the front door of the dorm she was working at (Melville).

Maura broke down sometime around 1 a.m. (going off of her supervisor's quotes). Supervisor believes she encountered maura around 1:15 a.m. in a zombie-like state which would be odd for someone who is just upset about something like a tisk with a boyfriend or something school related IMO).

Vasi's wreck took place somewhere around 12:20ish a.m. about a block and half away from maura's work dorm.

Now this last part in the next post is where i get rubbed the wrong way and think that something is sinister about what is going on. Stay Tuned while I find Maura's phone records for that night.

  • #293
Alright, I will put this out here.

We have been mis-led period.

And when I say we, I am talking about anyone interested in the maura murray case that has been following through newspaper, television show, family statements/police statements etc........

We keep hearing about this suspicious phone call that took place with maura's sister on the night maura had her meltdown at work.

Police have constantly referenced this call, and family have talked at length about this call as well.

The call in question was an outgoing call (meaning maura called her sister) in Hanover Mass from 10:10 p.m. to 10:38 p.m.

Clearly, this call happened at a minimum of two and a half hours before maura had her meltdown. It would seem obvious to even the most Barney Fife cop out there in the world (who is examining this case and looking over phone records) that tying Maura's meltdown to this 10 o clock call makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Yet Police kept insisting (to the public anyway) that this call had some sort of significiance.

Now onto what is significance.

At three different points during her 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift that night, Maura called her boyfriend vie cell phone. the first call out by maura came at 9:09 p.m., the second call out came at 9:55 p.m. Neither call was long in scope so it is very likely that she was unsuccessful in getting a hold of him or only talked briefly to him.

The third call to her boyfriend, which was the longest they talked came from 12:07 a.m. to 12:14 a.m.

to me, she could've been on a break in her car driving talking on her cell phone, (being distracted) shortly before vasi was hit.

I think it is reasonable enough to assume that if a female gets a chance to take a break, they turn right for their cell phone (maybe guys do too).

But the 1 million dollar question in all of this is.

Why have the police not mentioned this 12:07 a.m. to 12:14 a.m. call (which would be a whole lot more relevant to maura's breakdown then a call to her sister hours earlier).

Why have the family never bothered to bring up the fact that maura talked or attempted to talk to her boyfriend three different times that night. Yet they have only gone on record to discuss the 10 o clock phone call.

In other words, they know better and the family hapily played along and allowed that 10 o clock phone call to stand out and remain in a cloud of suspicion because they know that phone call was harmless IMO.

And it is possible (I hope at least that police aren't this stupid) that law enforcement has known all along that this call to her boyfriend (whether or not anything to do with vasi) was the catalyst of what happened in relation to maura's meltdown.

Sinister as in what?.. Who has sinister motives?.. LE?... Maura's family?.. What sinister motives would possibly really be at play WRT to either or both LE or her family in maliciously and intentionally lying, covering up for nefarious purposes the true facts that would actually lead to Maura and once and for all answer for whom it is that is responsible for her no longer being here(at the hands of Maura herself or if at the hands of another who that individual(s) is/are)....???

I have been a long time follower of Maura's vanishing, tho rarely comment on her case here or otherwise, but I just do not find it at all plausible for there to be any type of conspiracy involving either or both investigators or her desperate, tired, worn down family who I strongly believe ALL OF THE ABOVE would love nothing more than answers and any type closure possible regarding Maura.jmo

As far as full, transparent disclosure to us, the public of all info, details, potential evidence, etc IMO as is always the case we are never, nor should we be, privy to a large percentage of info and/or evidence regarding anything/everything concerning Maura's disappearance.. Yes, even all these many years later there will be much withheld from ever being released publically.. Tho, I am not always in agreement with LE decision to with hold so much(as I am a definite firm believer that investigators largest investigative tool that they have on their side in many of these cases is the public).. But many many times there is actually extremely good reason for why atleast the majority of info is withheld or concealed from the public.. Most times those very good and legitimate reasons and motives that are none too clear as to why are not revealed until at the very least the missing individual is located, and even then often times not revealed until those responsible are attempted to be successfully tried and convicted in a court of law for their involvement in the abduction, murder, etc..

IMO all of the aforementioned is SOP for exactly how these cases are handled and obviously those procedures are not in any way whatsoever even remotely of a sinister or nefarious nature, but rather just the opposite.. And here in Maura's case the same type procedures would so too apply.. Info/details concealed indefinitely.. Evidence absolutely withheld from the public and often times even if need be blatantly lied about, denied, or whatever necessary to protect the integrity of the case(again even many years later this tactic is still used in LE withholding, concealing, and even "lying" if need be WRT to info/details)..

So who is it that has sinister motives regarding Maura's case and why?

Maura's shift that night at Melville Dorm was from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
I believe the shift was 8:00pm to 1:45am, according to old posts referencing direct contact with MM's supervisor from that night. (Makes no difference, just nitpicking so that what we know to be fact is adhered to.)

Stuff about breaks and parking.
I'm unsure about breaks/parking, as I live off-campus, but I will definitely see what I can do to find out about what current policies are. What I would question then is that wouldn't her supervisor ask her what happened on break to make her so upset if she had just come back? The Conway articles mention that supervisors rotate every 30 minutes, but they probably(?) have a way of communicating who is on break when. Regarding the possibility that she parked at the SRA, even if she did, she would probably still leave her car in Lot 12, to avoid having to move it at 2am? (I realize that if she was in an accident that she probably would have been too distraught to think of this.) In any case, I can't see a good reason for her to be near Mattoon Street. The only reason I could see would be to go to the College Street Dunkin' Donuts, which would be a sub-optimal route that would bypass other choices around Amherst Center. Now I'm not sure what was available ~midnight in 2004, but I will hang out there some night to see what's open today. Furthermore, as of today, that's not even the closest Dunkin': There's one half the distance away on University Drive. (I'll see if I can go find out when each of the DD's opened.)

Stuff about breakdown.
Can you direct me to a source that claims a "zombie-like state?" Conway article says just that she broke down crying.

12:07 phone call.
Yes, this is absolutely something that one would need to know about to get a clear picture of MM's frame of mind that weekend. I still don't jump to "distracted, so hit Vasi," though this remains a possibility. The call could definitely be the reason she started crying, however.

I wish that the supervisor or Peabody would post here again, or possibly someone who knew MM at UMass. If she regularly went out for coffee on breaks, brought her car to work at night, etc., one of them would probably know.

Riot's To-Do List
Check current procedures for Dorm Monitor breaks and parking privileges.
Check dates each of Amherst's DD's opening.
Check current times that said DD's are open until.
(For first and third entries, see if I can learn about any recent changes to what I find out.)

Current DD Hours (dunkindonuts.com):

College Street: 5:00am - 10:00pm

Sinister may have been a strong word, but we are basically stating the same things, just going in different directions.

I do believe there are reasons why we (public) don't know about the phone calls that night from maura to her boyfriend.

On the police side, it would be for tactical reasons.

On the family side, I am not so sure, but I would say it is because of a certain image they have been trying to paint about maura (nothing wrong with that by the way).

Either way, information has been purposefully held back and its not just the police/investigators that are doing so and the reasons that (police/family) each are doing so are likely very different from one another and in no way are the two IMO collaborating on the way the story has been told.

I believe the shift was 8:00pm to 1:45am, according to old posts referencing direct contact with MM's supervisor from that night. (Makes no difference, just nitpicking so that what we know to be fact is adhered to.)

Can you direct me to a source that claims a "zombie-like state?" Conway article says just that she broke down crying.

Riot,

James Renner on his blog provided an interview that he had done with the supervisor.

The zombie-like description is my own, but she basically said the same thing.

When she encountered maura, maura was staring blankly straight ahead and didn't even acknowledge the supervisor when the supervisor approached her. Maura also was staring straight ahead as several residents passed and she didn't check their ID'S.

Maura then broke down and cried and was not physically able to punch herself off the clock and had to have the supervisor do it for her.

Maura did work from 8-2 but was relieved around 1:30 from the rest of her shift.

http://mauramurray.blogspot.com/2011/07/clarification-on-time-of-mauras.html

Karen Mayotte verifies 1:45am as the intended end of shift.

I'll look more into earlier descriptions of MM's state that night, but it is interesting to note that KM mentions the possibility of taking MM to "Dunkins" after she "got off shift." This implies that Dunkin' Donuts had a late-night location in 2004, but it could also just be that after 7 years KM got that detail wrong. She might have just meant to signify that she wanted to comfort MM.

I'll look into Rao's when I get the chance.
