Apologies if this has been asked and answered. I have tried searching the threads and may not be putting in the correct search terms to find this. Do we know what her GPA or grades were like right before her leaving? Like, for the last semester and the month or so she was back for the new semester.

By All accounts I have come across she was an excellent student. She was a deans list student at UMASS and while (Sad to say) you can't trust what family says about her publically, at the time she went missing she was still held in high academic standing.

Taken from Boston Globe Feb 15, 2004

A self-reliant woman, Murray toughed out three semesters as a chemical engineer at the US Military Academy at West Point before deciding the Army wasn't for her. Since transferring to the University of Massachusetts, she has been a successful student in the nursing program, said dean Eileen Breslin.
"Nursing students are very responsible. That's part of her character," said Breslin.

i havent commented on this case before i dont believe but i do read up on it quite a bit ok just my thoughts and i haven't read all the threads so if i repeat anything that has been said already i apologize... Its my thoughts that IF in fact MM was drinking and wrecked I would think she would most likely NOT be walking/running along side of the road if she was wanting to avoid being picked up...if LE were to see a random person walking or running along the road the most likely are going to stop and ask questions which would ultimately lead to them discovering about her wreck...so i am of the oppoion that she would most likely tried to stay out of site if she had been drinking

RF's house was under construction, but he lived on site in a trailer that was located in the yard next to the house.

I don't know what to make of his account of things, (Seeing someone as he was driving home from work). It sounds fishy, but there is nothing to prove he is lying either.

I've always thought it was a little hinky too, especially when he came forward right after the article in the newspaper about the psychic saying that Maura's body may be buried in a construction site. It was almost like he was trying to put her miles away from his house by saying he saw her running down the road about 5 to 8 miles east of the accident site. The dogs tracked her scent right up to the front of his property and ended there. Makes me go hmmmmm.

I agree, but if she ran east, I don't think any police were coming from that direction. She could have hid in the shadows as cars passed. It was probably easy to do since there were not many street lights. In fact, if she kept running east, there were no street lights at all for miles.

I completely agree with your point as to bias, but I have the following questions about this individual's account:

Did she see Maura's room firsthand, or is she reporting what she heard at the described meeting with police, counselors, and faculty?

If she did see the room firsthand, was she familiar with what Maura's dorm room typically looked like following a break?

It may be "obvious" to someone that Maura's room looked packed, but (from my understanding) we have very little to go on as to how she normally kept her room. Any conclusions we draw here that don't result from before AND after accounts are biased. (Our conclusions may not be wrong, or maliciously biased, but they would be biased nonetheless.)

Maura's mother did say Maura may not have unpacked from her winter break. If I recall correctly, she was only back to school for about 2 weeks. Perhaps she was too busy to unpack entirely. Supposedly, Maura brought everything from her dorm room home for the break.

I don't know if her mom was correct about the reason everything was packed, but I thought I'd mention what she said. JMO

BBM, didn't know that.... very interesting!

I know I've mentioned this, but no way do I think she could have actually run on that kind of road surface (black ice, stones/holes from plowing) unless she had a flashlight.. perhaps there was some moonlight, but ever so tricky... based upon my experience running on winter nights...

Anybody new to this case needs to take a look at this website. James Renner is currently writing a book about Maura due out next February.

Also, Butch Atwood (the bus driver) passed away, I believe back in 2007. not sure though.

I see on James' blog there's mention by a commenter of what I've been harping on here - that despite MM being a good runner, it would have been near impossible on the road surface that night..
It seems as my mention of difficulty in running that night prompted the latest/recent blog entry - but when I asked
if there ever was a check made to see if she had a flashlight in her emergency kit, or elsewhere with her, (as with one she could have made a run) my comment was not posted. Interesting....
Considering how much has been made of her being a runner, and of her making a run for it from the accident scene, the flashlight (or any kind of runner's light) is of importance, but seems to have been overlooked completely.

Here's a link to a good comment by a fellow runner:

IIRC BA moved to Florida and passed away. Wonder what ever happened to that gal he lived with and don't think there was ever mention of her being questioned by LE.

I'm new here but have followed Maura's disappearance on other sites. I saw the comment you quoted and thought it was nice of the person to offer that info as I've frequently wondered how likely would be the risk of injury had she tried to run.

Whether or not she routinely kept a flashlight in the car is a good question and one I'm surprised was not answered by now somewhere in the media, since her father might have known what was in the emergency kit. The flashlight being missing, or not, from her car would be a big sign to me of did she intend to walk/run a distance or did something else happen, such as catching a ride.

First, :welcome: missingnotforgotten to this thread!
It's been a question I've had for some time (the flashlight), after I read that her father mentioned the red rag in tailpipe was from an emergency kit he had given her for her car, I wondered if there was a flashlight in the kit as well. Would have thought James would have looked into this during his book research, but the question has not been answered...

I've mentioned how my wife and I, when we were younger, would run at night and we used flashlights. Because some of the roads and parks we ran thru were not the best, (can still hear my wife saying are you nuts going this way! ha) - we became adapt at turning our lights off and quickly switching from being in the road to on a sidewalk, feeling a more protected and hidden by parked cars..

If MM did have a flashlight, I think it would have been difficult not to have been seen since the road she was on was so rural and had snowbanks...
