New Hampshire mom killed husband reportedly battling brain cancer, 2 kids in murder-suicide, authorities say

Authorities in New Hampshire say 34-year-old Emily Long is believed to have fatally shot her husband, who was reportedly battling brain cancer, along with two of their children, before turning the gun on herself early Monday morning. A third child was found alive at the residence and is now in protective care. Police have not released details about a motive, but the case is being investigated as a murder-suicide.

( I tried looking to see if this was posted on WS but it didn’t appear to me that it was so here it is, this is my first time starting a thread so apologies if I break any TOS)

You did a great job! I saw this on social media yesterday, very sad story - all the way around.

Why do you think she didn't kill the youngest child?

Interested to see if she tried to claim "mercy killing" since her husband was battling cancer.

How does she claim that when she also killed two of their children?

Unless she left a detailed note or confided in someone, we may never know her motives. There is no one alive to explain - the surviving child is too young.

How would we know, she killed everyone in her family including herself, except her three year old son?

She made a video on her social media a few days prior, where she talked about how depressed she was, how hard her husband’s cancer journey was on the older kids. I felt a lot of compassion for her, what the family was going through was horrible and heartbreaking.

There’s alot to digest in this tragedy.

Oh my, the title should read "attempted murder-suicide" since she failed to commit suicide. I've heard reports of her being paralyzed, but I haven't seen an article explicitly state that so that is just hearsay

She took her husband, two kids and then herself, and then spared the youngest child. Heartbreaking.

@Sweet Liberty My Arm! per the statement released by the New Hampshire Attorney General's office, linked in the article posted to open the thread, Emily Long died by suicide.

What a horror...

This lady was tormented. What she did was senseless. She is gone to. I don't blame her, there is no point. She is gone too. RIP sweet family.

Really? There are plenty of articles that state she completed suicide.

I believe you're confusing this case with that of Lindsay Clancy.

I’m not sure why there is so much confusion in this thread about the circumstances and deaths?

- Emily’s husband had uncurable brain cancer.
- He was having seizures which were getting worse.
- They have three kids, ranging from age 9 to 3.
- The family was dealing with tremendous stress.
- Emily shot her husband, two older kids and herself.
- The three year old little, was unharmed.

The above is an abbreviated description of what was happening to this family. It’s far more heartbreaking and tragic than my synopsis.

I think Emily cracked under the weight of watching her husband slowly die and the weight of providing some sense of normalcy to three kids. I don’t agree with the murders obviously, but can understand how it came to that point for her.

My mom died of glioblastoma. I...kind of get it? It was Hell. Absolute hell. And you can't do anything, because that's murder. And you don't want to sit in jail if you have kids.

F cancer.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother.

My heart aches for Emily, the children, and all who loved Ryan. I feel moved to share this with the utmost care, hoping only to offer comfort and raise awareness of options that might help others in the future. Please know this comes from a place of deep empathy.

Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) is a sensitive and complex topic, and I don’t know if it would have been appropriate or possible for Ryan’s situation. I’m not suggesting it as an alternative to this heartbreaking tragedy, nor am I assuming it aligns with his beliefs or circumstances.

Through my work on an ethics committee, I’ve learned from a connection with the Vermont Ethics Network that Vermont recently passed a law allowing non-residents to access MAID. I don’t know if Ryan had the capacity to make such decisions or if this would have aligned with his values. There is so much we don’t know.

What’s clear is that Emily and the children deserved more support during this unimaginable time. My heart goes out to all of them. I feel great sadness for the family that didn’t have the chance to say goodbye and the futures the children will never know. Mostly, while the three-year old was not killed, this tragedy will forever change them. I’ve provided a link if anyone reading this wants to know more about MAID.

I think she spared the youngest because the 3yo was the least aware of the situation and therefore has a chance of living the rest of her life without grief. The mom assumed, imo, the 3yo will adjust to a new home and family. imo

It's crushing to think the wife felt so overwhelmed and apparently without support or hope.

Moo...why is she not being called a family annihilator as most family murder suicides are called?....moo

She's not? That is what she is, though I think some see the tragedy of the situation. Men often kill families out of shame of financial failure. This is different, but it is still murder and she gunned down her own children. No sugar-coating that.

I find this as despicable as when men wipe out their families. Those poor children didn't deserve this. And to leave one to deal with the trauma of it all?
Unfathomable.
