NH Tragedy: Emily Long Allegedly Kills Husband (Battling Brain Cancer) and 2 Kids in Murder-Suicide – Aug 2025”

  • #41
I felt compassion for her, not that I approve of murder. But in the situation which was described, thought it was something done in a moment of dark despair and hopelessness. But leaving the youngest child alive puzzled me.

With these new details, I agree with OP who say it was motivated by her financial mess, the net was closing in and she couldn’t face the consequences. Horribly selfish to take her husband and kids with her. Devastating to those left to deal with the loss of Ryan and the littles.

That’s a lot of money to embezzle in two years. I wonder if she was putting the money toward her husband’s medical expenses. MOO
I wondered the same thing. But apparently not.

she could've just unalived herself but she chose to murder her husband and two kids and left the youngest one all alone in the world

disgusting

I’m reminded that however much a family annihilation may initially seem to have “come out of the blue,” it usually does not, and when the details emerge, it is hardly ever carried out by someone who otherwise led an upstanding life and just “snapped.” We outsiders logically try to find some kind of answers why, for example the stress of caring for a terminally ill husband in this case, but it seems the husband’s sickness didn’t even prompt the thefts, let alone the murders.

FA perpetrators may seem mild-mannered and happy outside the home, but are typically abusive in some way to their husbands / wives and / or children before they kill, and there have been multiple cases over the years where being found out and soon to be confronted or punished for a high level of fraud or theft, was the apparent trigger.

Pure speculation but to me it’s another case of someone with a severe personality disorder who all the while is pretending their life is one way on social media / to others, and when they’re finally going to get their punishment and their fake life is all about to come crashing down, they take the violent, chaotic way out for themselves and others. It’s a form of evil just as horrifying as any random stranger murder to me, perhaps more so in many ways.

I'm thinking what she would've done if her husband wasn't sick? Would she have done the same thing? I wonder if his terminal illness gave her the idea that the murders would be seen as mercy killings, which they were at first.

I do think she belongs in the ranks of family annihilators, completely selfish in concern for their own image - the opposite of showing mercy.

This is just such a horribly horribly sad story... Ryan Long was such a beloved man to many...
and was such a great father.

I agree with you... the terminal illness probably encouraged the outcome.
Glioblastoma comes on like a freight train....

Glioblastoma multiforme, also known as GBM, is one of the most deadly brain tumors due to its rapid growth and aggressive nature. It's a grade-IV astrocytoma and one of oncology's most challenging to treat. Despite breakthroughs in GBM treatment, individuals with these tumors typically have a poor prognosis and a poor quality of life as the disease progresses.

I do believe they were all living in a nightmare as his disease progressed. And the nightmare only magnified her Shame. I do keep wondering how much Ryan knew of her embezzling....

But why why why the kids..............

Moo...I do wonder, what was she spending the money on.

Me too. I know others have pointed out the two year gap in the date of his diagnosis vs. the embezzlement starting. But maybe Ryan had been experiencing symptoms for a while and medical bills had already been straining the family bank account?

Or maybe she was simply a spender and accrued debt he didn’t know about? Too many unknowns at this point to predict.

Moo...soooo there is one child, there is a property/estate. Possibly life insurance policies and $600,000 embezzlement. So the estate will probably be sued for return of embezzled money. Is that how it works?

The person who was pursuing her for embezzlement said he would drop it so the estate goes to the surviving child, not to restitution. I read that in a link upthread.

That too me is the hardest to fathom. Yes the child will have family that can take care of them growing up, but they will always be looking for the answer to why. As sad as it is to type this, even an answer to why didn't she take me too. Perhaps survivors remorse when they get older. Lots of baggage to carry around. Here's hoping counseling can start early for them.

IIRC the surviving child is at an age where they could really benefit from something like play therapy, I really hope the family have access to resources like that!

Perhaps killing such a young child was simply a step too far for her, perhaps he was her favorite child and somehow she felt it was OK to hurt the others, perhaps he managed to get away somehow or hide. Perhaps she’s left him alive for some weird reason of her own.

I wouldn’t be surprised if more revelations came out about the mother’s personal life in this case.

I am interested in toxicology findings if that will ever be released. All JMO. That’s a lot of money to embezzle. My complete speculation but I will not be surprised at all if ongoing drug addiction/abuse is uncovered. All JMO.

Looks like the investigation into the embezzlement is going to continue. They will follow the money trail, likely to see where it went. Maybe he’ll be able to recover a portion without impacting the childs estate?

I am glad the investigation continues. What if others are involved? Also, poor oversight needs to be discovered so people know how she got away with it. The company needs to clear up their books. And I do wonder how she spent it.

She built a house of cards, it seems.

It gives me hope when there are still such good people in the world.

This is just the saddest case. I pray that poor surviving child is raised with parents who are also in therapy, who can help him navigate the rough waters of realizing the story of his birth family.
