Jersey City Shootout Suspects Identified: Sources

"Law enforcement sources had no immediate details on Graham, but a neighbor tells News 4 she lived near him for years. The neighbor described Graham as a former home health aide in Manhattan who met Anderson after she got hurt at work and quit; he says Graham turned into a "dark person" after they met.

The neighbor also claims Graham was coerced into a militant religion he could not identify; chanting and reading of the New Testament, translated into "evil," could be heard from her home, he said. A year ago, the neighbor says Graham stopped paying her condo fees and left. Jersey City tells News 4 the mortgage was assumed by a bank in November 2018."

Sounds like evidence of a downward spiral in life circumstances leading up to it...and obviously the dude is the leader here.

The Jersey City shooters have been identified as David Anderson and Francine Graham, members of the dangerous, #antisemitic cult known as “Black Israelites “. Officials are now combing their social media pages and finding numerous anti-Jewish, anti-Police posts and rants.

The motive for the attack was still under investigation, but the grocery store was clearly targeted. Three people were killed in the attack at the store. The two gunmen also died at the store.

One of the victims is Mindy Ferencz, 33 years old, and was Hasidic. The victim was born in Brooklyn and was married to Moishe Ferencz, the owner of the store. They had three young children.

Moshe Deutsch, 24, was also among those killed in the shootout. Mr. Deutsch had traveled from Brooklyn with his cousin, Chaim Deutsch, to the kosher grocery, which was popular among the growing community of Hasidic Jews in Jersey City.

While in the store, Chaim was shot, before realizing his cousin was also hit and saw him fall to the ground. Mr. Deutsch escaped out the back door of the store, before hopping multiple fences and running to safety. He was later treated at Jersey City Medical Center for his gunshot wounds and was released on Tuesday.

The third victim worked at the grocery store but wasn’t Jewish.

The incident began at Bay View Cemetery in Jersey City, where the suspects were confronted by Detective Joseph Seals. Detective Seals was killed in the encounter and the gunmen fled to the grocery store, where they holed up and exchanged heavy fire with law-enforcement officials for hours. Now, authorities say the incident began at the Jersey City Kosher Supermarket, with the gunmen opening fire on the store.

Authorities also said Tuesday they recovered a stolen U-Haul truck that contained an incendiary device, which was being examined by a bomb squad.

2 of the 3 victims killed in Jersey City kosher market shooting identified

"Men in vests appear to clean the crime scene Wednesday morning, a day after a wild, fatal shooting left a police officer and others dead."
Leah Minda Ferencz, 33, who owned the store with her husband, and Moshe Deutsch, 24, were killed in the store, according to Rabbi Moshe Schapiro, who is co-director of the Chabad of Hoboken and Jersey City synagogue and acting as an informal spokesman for the local Hasidic community.

Miguel Jason Rodriguez was identified by the pastor of a Newark church as the third victim, according to a report by NorthJersey.com. The pastor said Rodriguez, who was married with an 11-year-old daughter had moved to the U.S. from Ecuador and was working at the market to support his family.

Ferencz’s husband, Moshe Ferencz, had left the store shortly before the attack for an afternoon service at a nearby synagogue and was not injured, the rabbi said.

The non-Hasidic shooting victim, Schapiro said, was an employee of the store whom he did not name, but said was a Latino man in his 40s."

"The Ferencz family was one of the first three Orthodox families who moved to the Greenville section of Jersey City, said Mordy Rubin, a volunteer working with Misaskim, an American Orthodox organization for the care of the dead.

Schapiro said the couple were part of an influx of about 100 Hasidic families who had moved to Jersey City’s working class Greenville section in the past five years or so, after having been priced out of Brooklyn. He said the families were clustered in a 4- or 5-square-block area surrounding the grocery store and the synagogue next door, Khal Adas Greenville."

The Black Hebrew Israelite movement is a black supremacist hate group. You may remember their role in the Covington Catholic school kerfuffle in DC earlier this year. Their beliefs are similar to the Christian Identity white supremacist religion, with an obvious twist.

As people have previously mentioned there are tensions in various parts of NJ between Hasidic families and other residents, for a variety of reasons. It's possible that was a factor in why the shooters targeted a small store in (what appears to be) their local neighborhood.

Jersey City suspects targeted kosher store where 3 died, officials say
"Jail records show that Anderson, 47, was previously arrested in New Jersey on weapons charges stemming from a 2007 incident and in Ohio for criminal mischief stemming from a 2009 incident. He also had a run-in with the law in 2004 and was sentenced to three years of probation."

Question for the locals - were these two shooters, or their Black Hebrew Israelite group in general, upset about so-called gentrification? Do you think this Jewish family was targeted because they were some of the first to move into the neighborhood there?

Thanks. I have heard of these tensions generally in NY, in Brooklyn, so that answers my question that the tensions extend into NJ as well.

A few quick notes:

Commonalities with other mass shootings:

1) Hate crime / group targeted
2) Rantings / Manifestos written
3) sometimes explosives are left in other locations

Dissimilarities:

1) Female involved
2) Two shooters
3) Black shooters

ETA:
* note all mass shootings do not involve a targeted group, for instance JH, theater shooter.

"In a brief news conference Tuesday evening, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy praised the efforts of law enforcement, who "responded to this incident not knowing what they were entering, or if they would even make it out."
"If not for them," Murphy said, "I shudder, we shudder to think about how much worse today could have been."

So, anything that could have been done to prevent this, and can be discussed here? No? OK, then can we move on to the next one?

Thanks for the updates. I read that there were two officers also on block duty, and had they not been, more casualties could have occurred.

It's not really gentrification as the Hasidic/Orthodox families are not well off generally. More like a perception by some of an outsider group coming into an existing community and displacing current residents. There have also been tensions involving property tax exemptions, and resources being diverted from the (struggling) public school system and into religious schools. These tensions have happened most notably in Lakewood NJ as well as a community in upstate NY, I forget the name.

Graham has been described as a former home health aide who met Anderson after she got hurt at work and left her job. Neighbors said Anderson turned Graham into a "dark person."

I wonder when she left her job.

So my assessment so far: she was a home health aide, so not making that much to begin with. She got injured on the job and had to go on disability by the sound of it. I know a couple of people on disability in NY/NJ, and disability benefits have been reduced for a lot of people in the past couple of years, so that could have contributed to her becoming resentful and feeling hopeless. She likely lost her condo due to those financial problems. She also likely didn't have much of an existing emotional support system in terms of family, etc.

This guy comes into her life. My guess is he was sort of a narcissist type with her being a dependent type (kind of similar to the DC Snipers). He has an extensive prior criminal history; she doesn't (as far as we know). He becomes increasingly influential over her as her life circumstances continue to decline. Saying stuff like "we can't get ahead in life because of this and that group of people taking all the resources, I got arrested for no reason because of corrupt cops," etc. Typical rhetoric in these types of cases. She increasingly believes it, because it's easier for many people to blame their problems on an easily identifiable group rather than an unclear interaction of multiple personal and societal factors. To say "I can do X and Y to get revenge for my problems and leave some sort of legacy" as opposed to feeling powerless. And probably because she feels like he's there for her in some way when nobody else is.

Something spurs them from rhetoric to action -- likely at least several months beforehand, because it would take time to come up with the plan and acquire the weapons.

JMO.

Wow, there's targeted and then there's this. I count 9 people on the street when they get out of the van and they don't shoot the people, they focus only on this store. I think either there was a grudge (on top of the antisemitism) - maybe they (thought they) were made to feel uncomfortable at this store? Or the 9 people on the street were clearly not Jewish so they didn't shoot them. But wow, just awful.
