“There’s no question it was an attack on the Jewish community,” Fulop, the Jewish grandson of Holocaust survivors, said during a press conference late Wednesday afternoon with the city’s public safety director, James Shea. “There’s no other way to look at it when you examine the facts.”

While Fulop said he was instructed by New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal not to discuss the ongoing investigation, the mayor cited anti-Semitic materials that he said at least one of the suspects had viewed on Facebook.

The local Hasidic community has set up a fundraising page for the victims’ families on the charidy.com website.

But the rabbi added that people of every faith, every ethnic or racial group, could counter Tuesday’s attack and do justice to its victims and their loved ones through even modest gestures that expressed love or decency toward fellow human beings.

Also, investigators believe the two dead attackers — who were thought to be a couple — identified themselves in the past as Black Hebrew Israelites, a movement whose members have been known to rail against whites and Jews, according to a law enforcement official who was briefed on the matter but was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

In addition, authorities have found social media postings from at least one of the killers that were anti-police and anti-Jewish, the official said. The FBI on Wednesday searched the Harlem headquarters of the Israelite Church of God, which is the formal name of the Black Hebrew group, according to the official.

The Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ in New York said through an attorney Wednesday that it has no connection to the shooting and does not know the suspects.

“There’s no relationship to the events in Jersey City,” Gerald Lefcourt said. “There is no connection whatsoever, no knowledge of the individuals” who have been named as suspects in the shooting.

Although most Hebrew Israelites are neither explicitly racist nor anti-Semitic and do not advocate violence, there is a rising extremist sector within the Hebrew Israelite movement," the SPLC wrote in a 2008 report. Adherents to that fringe "believe that Jews are devilish impostors and who openly condemn whites as evil personified, deserving only death or slavery.”

Controversy swirls around Jersey City synagogue

Thanks @fred&edna

I agree with you that I think the 2 perps made a mistake and thought they were getting access to the Synagogue.

If so, then I am glad they messed up because I think they may have succeeded in killing more innocents.

"To stop hate + anti-semitism we need to call it out QUICKLY for what it is," Fulop said. "Some will say don’t call it anti-semitism or a hate crime till a longer review but being Jewish myself and the grandson of holocaust survivors I know enough to call it what this is."

When asked if law enforcement officials asked him to stop calling it a hate crime, Fulop said “we had conversations earlier and what kind of information can be shared...and my sentiment is it should be viewed as a hate crime.”

Yossie hurried back into the shul, but he did not share what he had seen with the others who were with him. “The husband of the woman who worked there was with me, and I didn’t want to get him agitated, so I kept it to myself,” he said.

Three hours later, or about four hours after their ordeal began, the police broke through the front door. “They came in with guns drawn, and we assured them that none of the suspects were in the building. As they began climbing to the second floor with their guns still drawn, we told them that there were little children upstairs, so they were cautious not to scare them any more than they already were.”

With all the kids in there, this could have been so much worse. Im so glad they did not get access to the synagogue.

JMO
Thinking about it some more, I am now more convinced the perps thought they were getting access to the synagogue because there was a report in one of the news stories that said one of the perps came outside for a few seconds and then went back inside. I am guessing that when he went outside he was looking for the right door to the synagogue. He probably saw or heard LE vehicles approaching and still didnt know exactly how to get to the right door of the synagogue so he probably went back in the Deli to have their last stand in the Deli.

In NY and NJ, it is common on blocks like that where you only see a small front door entrance from the street, but once you get inside, the places are much larger than you think when looking at just the door on the street.

“Together, we in the Muslim and Jewish Caucuses of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee are horrified by Tuesday’s shooting in Jersey City that murdered six people at a kosher market. We stand together against hatred, and our prayers go out to the victims, including the fallen officer, and their families.

Living in the magnificent mosaic of New Jersey and all America, we embrace our commonalities and respect any differences, and commit redoubling our efforts to work together, as the family of Abraham, to fight hatred against all oppressed communities – including, but not only, our own.

Over the past few years, hatred against both the Muslim and Jewish communities, and certainly other communities, has increased. With great prejudice, Muslims have been targeted with harmful policies, including Muslim refugees. Leaders have spoken outrageous Antisemitic tropes and made outrageous Islamophobic statements, while refusing to condemn white nationalists. We stand united against all forms of hatred and bigotry, and pledge to work together toward greater understanding of different cultures that recognizes our common humanity.”

Mr. Anderson repeatedly played audio recordings of a man the neighbor believed to be Louis Farrakhan, and sounded like he himself was growing agitated. He shouted bible verses and then chanted out his interpretations of what they meant.

The neighbor said the most common theme was that Mr. Anderson’s religion was the only true faith while others — specifically Catholicism and Judaism — were false.

He soon heard Ms. Graham join in the chanting and said she sounded “coerced.”

She quit paying her common charges for the condominium they shared and also stopped paying her water bill, he said.

Eventually, in 2018, her condo unit went into foreclosure, the neighbor said. She and Mr. Anderson were evicted, but they repeatedly busted into their former home to spend the day there, leaving each day around 6 p.m.

As for Ms. Graham, he said he had not seen her in a year. He learned of the Jersey City shooting when the police banged on his door at 2:30 a.m.

Strange I had upstairs neighbors did exactly the same thing and they were kicked out of the complex for not paying condo fees also. Very strange couple.

I'm so repulsed when these type of haters use their God as the excuse for what they do to innocent victims.

His creator he says he believed in is the Devil himself for only the Devil would approve of hate, and violence against anyone.

God is a loving God who loves, and values all of his children. He doesn't teach anyone to hate, but to love all others.

What they both worshipped was hate. Hate is deadly evil. The only thing that can eradicate hate is powerful love, which we have seen happening in this very community as they all stand in solidarity.

Each time hate rears it's evil head the first thing that happens afterwards the affect citizens of each town, city, or rural community comes together as one grieving people to embrace those affected, to give loving support, and to PRAY together.

No matter how many naysayers mock prayers it the one common denominator that happens in all tragedies because most know prayers are unbelievably powerful.

Each, and everytime when the grieving family members speak out they express their appreciation for all of the prayers, and loving support their families have received.

God gives us all free will to make our own choice in our lives. whether they are right choices or terribly wrong choices like these two murderers who chose murdering hatred, instead of love, acceptance of all others, and kindness. It's up to each one of us to build our own stair steps to Heaven or choosing Hell instead by the choices made.

But God is always present to give love, and comfort to the grieving, no matter the situation or circumstances.

I saw an in depth study on FNN just yesterday that showed most of the hate crimes committed in our country are anti-semitic hate crimes. :(

It was at the alarming percentage of over 57+%. The other hate crimes committed against others didn't even come close, and were each in the low teen percentile or lower.

It is alarming that in 2019 in America the Jewish people are specifically targeted, and endure hate crimes against them more than any other.

Jersey City Shooting: Suspect Linked to Black Hebrew Israelite Group

One of the “Black Hebrew Israelite” killers who targeted a Jewish grocery store in Jersey City left behind a handwritten note that said: “I do this because my creator makes me do this and I hate who he hates,” law enforcement sources told The Post.
https://nypost.com/2019/12/11/jerse...handwritten-note-my-creator-makes-me-do-this/

I wonder if there was a manic/delusional/psychotic component to this? Maybe even a drug induced component (the apparent sudden downward spiral in her mental state, and the breaking into her own foreclosed house on a daily basis, makes me wonder about that).

I also wonder if anyone tried to get Francine Graham out of it, like her friends and family? Did they try to intervene and she said no? Or did she not have close friends and family?

In 2019, anti-Semitic hate crimes in New York City rose 63 percent, according to the New York Police Department, with a wave of violent crimes against Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn neighborhoods. The Anti-Defamation League similarly said this fall that the United States was on pace for a record number of anti-Semitic incidents this year.

Jonathan Greenblatt, the ADL’s chief executive, said Wednesday that more investigation into the Jersey City attack was needed but that it appeared to be “another incident in a long line of violent incidents targeting the Jewish community. This hatred is a disease, and right now, we are experiencing an epidemic.”

Good. At this point I don't know why anyone would dispute that it is a hate crime. Even if a personal grievance was also involved, it's clear that there was a hate crime component to it given their beliefs and writings. And there's no reason not to share the information either...that's what will tell people what to look out for to prevent the next one.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal shed some new light on the investigation Thursday afternoon but there are still parts of the tragic day that were unclear following the press conference.

What is the shooters’ connection to the murder of a ride share service driver?
The attackers, identified as 47-year-old David Anderson and the 50-year-old Francine Graham, were also “prime suspects” in the weekend killing of a car service driver in Bayonne, Grewal confirmed this week.
How and when did Det. Seals encounter the shooters?
The suspects shot Seals in the head at the cemetery before parking the van at 12:21 p.m. directly across the street from the JC Kosher Supermarket at 223 Martin Luther King Drive, the attorney general’s office has said.

Moshe Deutsch, 24, Leah Minda Ferencz, 33, and Douglas Miguel Rodriguez, 49, of Jersey City, before they were killed following an exchange of gunfire with police that lasted more than three hours.

“We believe the suspects held views that reflected hatred of Jewish people as well as law enforcement,” Grewal said. “The evidence points toward acts of hate. We’re investigating this as a potential act of terrorism fueled by anti-Semitic and anti-law enforcement beliefs."

However, although Grewal said the shooters “expressed interest" in hate groups such as the Black Hebrew Israelites, investigators said they believe they acted alone and not as part of any organization.

“The motivation appeared to be clearly...a bias towards both the Jewish community and law enforcement,” U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said, adding that a surveillance video showed the suspects only engaged with the victims in the store and law enforcement and nobody else.

Anderson was reportedly a onetime follower, while Graham, became a “dark person” after meeting Anderson, according to a NBCNewYork.com report.

The New York Post also reported that Anderson wrote a note found inside the van that read “I do this because my creator makes me dothis and I hate who he hates.”

The pair was also seen attending an anti-Semitic Black Hebrew Israelite church in Harlem, the building’s superintendent told the New York Post.

funeral details were being planned for Seals and the other victims, the attorney general’s office said it was continuing its probe of the shootings.

Hudson County Prosecutor Ester Suarez told residents Thursday that if they see something, to report it to authorities.

“We’ve also begun the process of reaching out to many of our community’s civic, educational and governmental partners in Jersey City, including members of the Jewish community as well as the African American community,” Suarez said.

Jersey City’s leaders also called for unity in the aftermath of the attack.

“As we try to make sense of the senseless violence and death we are often left here in Jersey City aimless and confused,” said Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro. “Yet we know one thing for sure: that it was hate and anger that fueled the carnage here in Jersey City.”

The FBI also announced Thursday that they were looking for any photos or videos relevant to the shootings and had created a “depository webpage” where people could submit them.

They say it belonged to David Aderson, 47, one of the gunmen. The FBI wants to find the vehicle

It's a white 2001 Ford van with license plate number B40JSD. If you find it, you are asked to call 973-792-7518.

Meantime, an announcement is expected on Friday morning from the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The foundation is expected to announce that they will pay off the mortgage of slain Detective Joe Seals, who leaves behind a wife and five children.

Also on Friday, Senator Bob Menendez, Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition and other local leaders are expected to hold a candlelight vigil and call for gun safety reform.

This, as the investigation continues into the deadly shooting and standoff in Jersey City that left Det. Seals and three civilians dead, and part of the focus is now on a fringe group with anti-Semitic, anti-white and anti-police tendencies that the now-deceased suspects were said to follow.

Five firearms have been recovered linked to Anderson and Graham, including an AR-15-style weapon, a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9-mm semiautomatic weapon, a 9-mm Glock 17, and a .22 caliber Ruger Mark 4 with a silencer. Four weapons were found inside the JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive, while the Ruger was located inside the stolen U-Haul van the suspects drove to the scene.

Through serial numbers, authorities were able to trace two of them to separate gun shops in Ohio, where Graham reportedly purchased them.
market

Authorities said a device found in the back of the U-Haul proved to be an operable explosive device, a pipe bomb. Also in the U-Haul were notes with religious writings, one of which included the quote, "I do this because my creator makes me do this and I hate who he hates," according to multiple law enforcement sources.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said Wednesday morning that the gunmen clearly targeted the market, with surveillance video showing them driving slowly through the city's streets before stopping outside, calmly exiting their van and immediately opening fire. Grewal said Thursday that investigators were working to determine how the suspects chose their target, as well as detail their interaction with Seals.

Law enforcement sources said Detective Seals may have been interested in the two suspects who ultimately killed him because of a weekend homicide in Bayonne, where a Jersey City man identified as Michael Rumberger was found in the trunk of a Lincoln Town Car on Saturday night.

At this point, the leading theory is the detective had a prior source relationship with one of the suspects, which may explain why he felt comfortable meeting in the cemetery without backup and without calling it in to others.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy ordered that the U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff at all state buildings and facilities from December 13 through December 20 in honor of the victims of the shooting.

Thursday, December 12, 2019 - Members of a local community group were on hand at Sacred Heart School, in Jersey City to hand out flowers to students at dismissal time, Thursday. Declining to give their names or the organization's name, one person would only say that they were “from a local organization here to give students a better ending to the day than they had the other day. We're just doing it for the kids. It's not for any publicity or anything." She did say the group has been active in the community for 15.
Here are all the ways you can help families of Jersey City shooting victims
