I've been a veteran of the internet for many many years. I've heard many hard luck stories on many forums and it seems that the majority of them end up being fake. So I will never ever give one dime to anybody over the internet. Never!

New Jersey authorities are taking a closer look at websites that allow strangers to dig into their pockets for causes such as replacing a stolen wheelchair for a quadriplegic Idaho man and expanding an animal-rescue operation in Salem County after an apparent scam involving a New Jersey couple and a homeless Philadelphia man.

The state Attorney General's Office will "review its practices" regarding websites such as GoFundMe and GoGetFunding.

D'Amico was arrested Monday on a warrant for twice failing to appear in court on charges including driving with a suspended license out of Burlington County. His bail was set at $500.01 and he has since been released.

D'Amico also had a warrant for his arrest in Jersey City for repeatedly skipping bail on a charge for allegedly throwing things from a vehicle and damaging a woman's car in 2016. He was released on his own recognizance on that charge following the recent Burlington arrest and ordered to appear in court in Hudson County on Sept. 26.

As for the 2016 incident in Jersey City, court documents hint that road rage may have been the root of the charge. The criminal complaint -- originally filed in Superior Court but later downgraded to municipal court -- alleged D'Amico ripped three headrests off of seats in a Honda Odyssey and then threw them out the window, damaging the hood and windshield of a car being driven by a Jersey City woman. It caused between $500 and $2,000 in damage.

Court records show that after an initial appearance, he failed to go to court at least three times in 2017 and 2018. Each time, he lost the bail money he had posted for a total of $1,100.

The most recent bail posted on June 5 -- $500 -- was forfeited when he missed a July court date.

Authorities have not commented on why D'Amico wasn't arrested on either warrant when authorities executed the search warrant Thursday at the home. Despite his suspended license, he drove away from the home after the raid was over.

Unbelievable

Wow, the ditch they dug keeps getting deeper & deeper with very little effort on their part  What a huge mess they got themselves into and poor Johnny ...... completely blindsided by the instant fame & attention when he was just trying to help a stranded woman (he obviously felt compassion/sorry/something for her, he STILL has strong feelings toward HER based on one of the recent articles!).

FWIW I would be HORRIFIED if I was in their "shoes" lol!

With all that money at their disposal, I am more than a little confused why he didn't utilize a VERY minuscule portion to clear these legal issues up. Yet he had no problem (allegedly) buying shoes, taking vacations, and hitting the casino o_O

Go fund me...I have donated to people I personally know, who had a child come down with cancer. But anything else, forget it.

And anyone who takes $20 from a homeless person for gas...is already a deadbeat. There is a problem there.

Mark D'Amico appeared in Burlington City municipal court on unrelated traffic charges and mostly declined to address the headline-grabbing GoFundMe case, but when a reporter asked if everything would become clear, D'Amico responded, "Crystal clear."

The civil case is on hold until December. The couple has not been criminally charged.

Wow, so this really was a hoax after all.....my Lord.

“The New Jersey couple who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in a viral charity campaign for a homeless man were allegedly working with the vagrant as part of an elaborate ruse, according to a new report.”

“According a source who spoke to the news outlet, which said it had a copy of a criminal complaint, all three are expected to face charges of conspiracy and theft by deception for working together to create the ruse. The Burlington County Prosecutor’s office is expected to make an announcement in the case Thursday, according to multiple reports.”

Homeless man conspired with couple who raised $400k on GoFundMe | Daily Mail Online

A homeless man allegedly conspired with a New Jersey couple by making up a heartwarming story to scam donors into giving them $400,000 on GoFundMe.

Kate McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico, of Bordentown, New Jersey, made headlines after setting up a fundraising page for Johnny Bobbitt last year.

She said Bobbitt came to her aid and gave her his last $20 when she ran out of gas on an Interstate 95 exit ramp in Philadelphia late one night last October.

More than 14,000 people donated to the GoFundMe campaign McClure and D'Amico set up as a way to give back to Bobbitt.

Couple, homeless man charged with faking story that earned $400k in donations

PHILADELPHIA, PA (NBC News/WCMH) - A New Jersey couple and a homeless man who used a GoFundMe page to raise $400,000 now face criminal charges.

Prosecutors tell WCAU that Mark D'amico and Kate McClure conspired with destitute Johnny Bobbitt to create the get-rich-quick scheme in 2017.

The couple created a GoFundMe page, claiming the homeless drug addict Bobbitt spent his last $20 to fill up McClure's empty gas tank after her car broke down.

All three face charges of conspiracy and theft by deception for working together to create the alleged ruse.

The couple turned themselves in to authorities on Wednesday, but Bobbitt is still at large.

NJ GoFundMe Couple, Homeless Man Made Up Story, Source Says

A complaint obtained by NBC10 alleges that the three conspired with one another to make up a false story in order to raise more than $400,000.

Investigators say the three deliberately prevented donors for their GoFundMe campaign from gaining information "that would affect their judgment about solicited contribution to that fundraising effort."

I always wondered about a person who had zero money or even a credit card to pay for gas. Seemed suspect to me.

Well the homeless guy supposedly made his money by panhandling. So he wouldn't have had zero money. So the story seemed plausible to me, I didn't see that one coming at all.

Sorry, 90% of what people tell you on the internet is a lie. Probably more. I'd never give a dime to anyone on a go fund me page, no matter what the cause.
