There is a lot more to this story. Apparently James Parrillo has been doing this for a long time and has had many victims, particularly along the Pacific Crest Trail. A quick google search shows warnings posted by hikers on various social media and backpacker sites. He’s been arrested a several times, but it looks like he was never convicted for kidnapping/assault/rape type crimes.

In 1986 Angelo Parrillo was in Wenatchee WA, Chelan Cty Regional Jail - arrested for local check fraud in Omak area. Once released he met a woman “C” who he victimized for a year, traveling between California and New York. She escaped from him in San Jose CA.
