GUILTY NJ - Kara Alongi, 16, charged in abduction hoax, 30 Sept 2012

Hoping all these guests that have been checking will notice just how many others are missing. Turn this frustration into a positive by tweeting about one of the many others. They need an army too! Be their advocate!

I do hope Kara is safe out there and contacts her family soon.

And I hope that when another person goes missing, people will remember this story and how quickly the news of a missing person can spread via Twitter.

I'm angry that Kara has put her family and friends through so much distress, and I worry that the next missing teenage girl isn't automatically written of as a runaway because of Kara's actions.

But on a positive note, before yesterday I knew nothing about Twitter and had no idea how quickly a large number of people could be notified about an event. FB is great, but the Twitter response to Kara's disappearance was amazing, IMO.

From now on, I'm planning to use Twitter as part of my missing persons "arsenal".

folks, Kara is still missing: so let's not think she is home yet. Runaway or not she is still missing and could be or become endangered.

This is really hitting a nerve with me because when I was 16 I actually WAS abducted. I got away from him and called 911, went to the hospital, had documented injuries, was interviewed by police and gave a solid description of the perp and his car, his first name, the name of the motel he took me to, and they did not take it seriously or believe me until hours later when they found him and discovered he had done it before. The girl in the previous case was not believed either-they assumed both of us were just runaways, and/or trying to get attention.

This kind of behavior hurts legitimate crime victims. She needs to be held accountable.

I'm sorry for what you went through, thanks for sharing your story. I cannot imagine how frustrating it must be to go through such hell and have LE not believe you. I'm glad that eventually you were proven right.

I agree that Kara needs to be held accountable for her actions, once she comes home safely. She also needs some type of therapy for whatever issues have caused her to act so irresponsibly. JMO

Unfortunately, tweets are made about missing persons all the time, and they never, ever blow up the way Kara's did. Her case went viral for two reasons:

1. She tweeted "call 911"
2. People started thinking it was a hoax.

If someone had just tweeted, "My friend Kara is missing. Please re-tweet" It never would've gotten anywhere near as much attention.

There are so many lessons to be learned here.

I hope and pray that Kara is found safe, my daughter and I had a conversation just yesterday about tiny women going missing... you rarely hear of a 5'10" 200lb missing lady that didn't run away (we are both 5'10"-11").

My daughter also is concerned with the idea that some girls might start "copy abductions", somewhat like Ivy Merck (I understand she did not cry kidnap). I hope that's not the case. MOO

This makes me so mad and sad after investing so much time to this girl. I really hope she is punished for this. Maybe they should make her spend some time looking into all the REAL missing kids out there.

I think this is a FANTASTIC idea! When she is found SAFE, I hope her parents get her involved with community service... if the county doesn't first. :maddening:

Great idea!! Maybe this whole debacle will be a life changing event for Kara. I hesitate to say more because we know so little. I'm bad that way (jumping to conclusions).

Nice boxes & pretty bows, can be deceiving. Just sayin'

Bumping Nurse's warning. LE has said that Kara is missing. Please do NOT assume this is a hoax and bash Kara. When we have confirmation that she is ALIVE and WELL, then the discussion about about frustration and hoaxes can begin.

LE often says "no evidence of foul play" and yet the case has a very sad ending.

Everyone should continue to look for Kara UNITL we know what is happening here.

Thanks,

Salem

The title of this thread was changed to add ("Hoax", police say). Maybe that shouldn't be in the title, since that might lead people to think Kara is not in danger. If she's a runaway, she's in danger IMO.

This girl has a career in marketing. Saying that, I hope she is found safe very soon as her mindset could surely put her in real life, deep, deep trouble. She needs to be punished in someway to benefit the truly missing. She needs her eyes opened. IMO

Thanks button wasn't enough!

I was hoping that many of the guests would decide to help with all the other Missing Persons cases on Websleuths!

Aw, thanks! :) Since social media has proven to be such an instrumental tool in many recent cases I've decided to start compiling a list of the used #hashtags for each case. If anyone has any thoughts or input please let me know!

Kids who want to run away really shouldn't "stage" an abduction, it's so wrong, if you want to leave just run away but please tell your parents first at least. :( such a waste of resources from LE/FBI who could be devoting their time to actual abductions (not that she shouldn't be found) but now that she did that I could see how LE would be less supportive even if she is in danger with a creep she met online. Anyone who fakes an abduction IMO should have to do community service helping families who have had someone abducted. Some girl recently in WA did something similar by cutting her window screen. Really hope this girl gets some therapy when she comes home.

I hope she didn't meet up with someone on line.

that's kind of where i'm leaning at the moment...we don't know how much money she had, so either she took the train to trenton or new york (the ends of the line either north or south). unless you have a lot of it, and are uber-street-smart, a pretty little blonde won't be too safe in either city unescorted. was she going to meet someone?

one of the articles mentioned that the dogs tracked her from the back door, through the neighbors' back yard, and onto the corner where the trail ended. presumably where she caught the cab. so her exit strategy was pretty risky, given that she wouldn't know if the '911' mention on twitter wouldn't have caused LE to respond and send a squad car. and from the scent trail, she obviously didn't want to be seen out in front of her house.

there wasn't much time between the tweet and the call to the cab company, correct?

woops forgot to add this.

http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainSchedulesFrom

there were trains to NYC at 6:00, 6:49, and 7:00pm...surely somewhere along the line there are surveillance cameras? maybe?

I was just looking that up, too. I'm in the process of trying to find any concerts going on last night after 7-8-9 PM...but I don't have the slightest idea of Kara's favorite type of music. And she wouldn't go by herself, would she?

Has it been said what the cabbie saw Kara dressed in? Wouldn't make sense for a 16 year old to leave for a night in the city wearing a high school sweatshirt. She wouldn't meet a guy dressed like that either, IMO.

Maybe the sweatshirt is what she was wearing when her family left for the game, but she changed before she left the house. Most mom's probably could not pick out 1 missing shirt out of their teenage daughter's wardrobe.
