Suspect was only 18/19 years old at the time. I have a nephew who is 19, hard to wrap my brain around that.

I had the very same thought. I wonder what his arrest record from that time period looks like, if he has one. I'm sure he didn't jump straight to a crime like this if he is guilty of Lisa's murder. I'm looking forward to what comes out at trial.

It's been a number of years since this happened and it appears that they suspect his involvement in his wife's disappearance. Who know is there are others.

I love cold case catches, especially if it is DNA related, lets hope they look again at his wife's disappearance

Robert McCaffrey killed Lisa McBride when he was 18 or19 years old since he is 54 years old currently. I know somebody already said that in a previous post on this thread that he was very young at the time to do a crime like this. Its wasn't a direct rage murder(in my opinion) like Sharon Thor's was in October 1982 in Franklin Twp(Somerset County) in the Central Part of New Jersey but maybe a delayed rage murder. We will have to see.

According to the documents, investigators used updated DNA technology earlier this year to re‑examine evidence collected from McBride’s bedroom in Vernon Township, New Jersey. In February 2026, a DNA profile developed from an item found on McBride’s bed produced a match to McCaffrey.

Investigators say the DNA was available for comparison because McCaffrey’s genetic profile was collected during his incarceration in Charleston County, where he served time for obstruction of justice in connection with Gayle McCaffrey’s disappearance.

The documents also reveal that in a 2019 interview, a known associate of Robert McCaffrey told detectives that McCaffrey confessed around 1995 to killing McBride. According to the affidavit, the associate reported that McCaffrey said he tried to return to McBride’s home after the killing to retrieve something he believed could link him to the crime.

The newly released records outline several details about McCaffrey’s past, including that he lived near the victim’s home at the time of her disappearance.

It also shows he was dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1989 due to “impulse control issues,” was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder during his military service, and has a documented history involving another missing‑person case — the disappearance of his wife, Gayle, whose remains have never been found.

On April 10, investigators executed a search warrant at McCaffrey’s home in Manteo, along with a detached shed and two vehicles registered to him. Officers were searching for McBride’s missing belongings, including a purse, wallet, credit cards, driver’s license, and a brass keychain with an engraving.

They also searched for financial records and any items investigators described as potential “trophies” or mementos kept from the crime.
