TRIAL HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 10 – 1/28/26

DAY 9 – 1/27/26

  • LIVE STREAM: NJ v. Paul Caneiro – Day 9 | Mansion Murders Trial
  • Detective Joseph Cordoma testified as the jury saw photos of the fire damage in Keith Caneiro’s home. He testified that the cause of the fire was determined to be incendiary and it began in the basement storage closet.
  • NJ State Police K9 handler told jurors that human remains detection K9 Creed indicated the odor of human remains in two locations at Paul Caneiro’s home: the rear cargo area of a white Porsche Macan parked in the driveway and a frozen pile of debris found in the basement (in which a pair of jeans with staining was later discovered).

DAY 8 – 1/23/26

  • LIVE STREAM: NJ v. Paul Caneiro – Day 8 | Mansion Murders Trial
  • Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Brian Migliorisi, a high-tech crimes investigator, testified about forensic data extractions from Paul Caneiro’s iPhone and the Wyze home-camera system at Keith Caneiro’s house.
  • Jurors again heard Wyze audio from Nov. 19, 2018, in which Keith Caneiro pressed for bank statements and online access tied to missing Canada Life payments (first played through financial crimes detective Debbie Bassinger).
  • Migliorisi also testified the home’s hardwired DVR unit was heavily fire-damaged and could not be extracted.
  • On cross, the defense highlighted limits in what was shown. The detective acknowledged he was not aware the Wyze footage had already been played for the jury earlier through the state’s financial crimes detective.
  • Defense questioning also pointed to other messages in the record showing Keith asking Paul for technical help, including school and home issues, after prosecutors focused the jury on a small set of contentious exchanges.
  • The State’s case is expected to continue on for quite some time; jurors were told the trial itself could last until mid-March.

Cordoma [Fire Expert, MCPO Detective Joseph Cordoma (Ret)] was on the witness stand, pointing out blood staining depicted in crime scene photographs of the mansion's kitchen before he was called upon to relay what conclusions he drew from the blood patterns.

[..]

With the family members out of the courtroom, Christopher Decker, deputy first assistant Monmouth County prosecutor, asked Cordoma what conclusions he drew from the blood stains in the kitchen.

Cordoma said the patterns indicated "a mobile blood source'' who entered the kitchen and was "moving around that island area, depositing several areas of liquid blood on the island and floor,'' before moving back toward where he entered the kitchen. He said the person was either bleeding or transferring blood from somewhere else.

[..]

Based on the time that Verizon said the line was cut, as well as surveillance video depicting someone outside on the property, Cordoma said the fire was set around 3 a.m. It burned slowly until a portion of the first floor collapsed and fed it with oxygen, causing the fire to grow out of control later in the day, when police received a 911 call about it around 12:30 p.m.

[..]

A onetime employee of one of those businesses, technology consulting company Square One, testified he got an email the morning of Nov. 20, 2018, alerting him to a connectivity issue or power outage affecting the computer server in Keith Caneiro's basement. .

The employee, Robert Block, said he noticed the email around 7:30 a.m. as he was getting ready for work and sent a text message about it to Paul Caneiro.

"Hey, it looks like the firewall went down,'' Block testified he said in a text he sent shortly after 8 a.m.

Paul Caneiro responded, "I had a fire in my house. The place went up early this morning," Block said.

Block then sent a text asking, "Whose house?'' to which Paul Caneiro responded, "I can't talk now,'' he testified.
