Colts Neck fire shakes town: 'It's so scary ... This doesn't happen here'

Volshteyn’s daughter went to school with the Caneiro’s children and was a grade younger than the Caneiro’s daughter, who was about 8. They celebrated birthdays together and trick-or-treated each others’ homes, she said.

But on Tuesday morning, the Caneiros’ children were not waiting for the school bus, according to Volshteyn.

Their absence, she said sadly, “was strange.”

He must have snuck over there, during the night, because the kids where not waiting for the bus Tuesday morning. It would have been a tight timeline, if he had done everything, after he left his house, around noon, and when the fire was reported at his br0ther’s house, around 12:45 p.m.

2:00 p.m.: Gramiccioni has begun. He thanks fire crews for battling the fire well into yesterday evening.

2:01 p.m.: Prosecutor identifies two of the dead as Keith Caneiro, 50, and his wife Jennifer, 45. Says the other victims were their children, but can't identify them because of the condition of the bodies. He said yesterday they had been severely burned.

2:04 p.m.: Gramiccioni confirms the family were victims of "homicidal violence."

2:05 p.m.: Prosecutor says law enforcement knows Colts Neck to be a "quiet" and "safe" community. Encourages community to alert law enforcement if they have any information relevant to the investigation.

2:07 p.m.: Asked about motive, Gramiccioni said police must "crawl before we walk." He said information about possible motive may come out at Caneiro's upcoming detention hearing for aggravated arson in connection with the fire at his own home in Ocean Township.

2:09 p.m.: Prosecutor describes the killing was a "targeted situation" involving Caneiro family.

2:11 p.m.: Asked about timing of events, the prosecutor says it's too early to know when exactly the Caneiro family was killed. The scene at Willow Brook Road has not yet been deemed clear for investigators to enter.

2:15 p.m.: Reporter asks Gramiccioni if Paul Caneiro is a suspect in the killing of Keith Caneiro and his family. Prosecutor says he can't confirm nor deny.

2:20 p.m.: Gramiccioni says murder of Caneiro family occurred before the fire was set to their home, but he can't say the exact time it occurred.

2:24 p.m.: Prosecutor says he cannot comment on if a weapon was found at Paul Caneiro's home in Ocean Township.

2:26 p.m.: Gramiccioni wraps up by asking the public to come forward if they have any information on what transpired.

2:28 p.m.: Prosecutor has concluded. Key takeaways: He confirms it was Keith and Jennifer Caneiro who were killed along with their two children. Gramiccioni says the family was the victim of "homicidal violence" before the fire was set at their Willow Brook Road mansion Tuesday. Keith's brother Paul Caneiro is in jail for aggravated arson at his Ocean Township home. Authorities won't say if he's a suspect in the killing in Colts Neck.

IMO, this crime will be rooted in greed and envy.
IMO, the murderer killed wife and children as they would have been the legatees to the estate had they survived KC. Next to spouse and children, closest next of kin are siblings...JMO.

Greed and envy, for sure, but maybe not about getting a big inheritance. It almost seems more like he was trying to cover something up. Something like siphoning money out of the businesses or shady business practices. If he knew something was going to be discovered soon that would turn his family against him or send him to prison, he might have done this more out of desperation than greed. JMO
