16-year-old in custody after suspected quadruple homicide of his family members

An investigation into the motive of the quadruple homicide is ongoing, according to the sheriff's office.

The Valencia County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday from Diego Leyva, 16, who told the dispatcher he had killed his family.

When the police arrived, the boy – identified as Diego Leyva – walked out of his home with his hands in the air and in an “extremely intoxicated” state, according to a statement from investigators. Inside the home, officers said they found a gun on the kitchen table and the bodies of the deceased family members.

During a status hearing on Monday, Jan. 6, Leyva and his attorney, Todd Farkas, appeared before 13th Judicial District Judge Cindy Mercer via video. During the brief hearing, the judge reviewed a motion from Farkas for a competency evaluation of his client.

Once he was indicted, Leyva was charged as an adult, Martinez said in an interview following the status hearing. The state has filed a notice with the court to seek adult sanctions.
