Elizabeth Hagerty said she was walking with her husband, Robert, and their two dogs when one canine began rolling on what appeared to be a burnt part of a brassiere. The dogs proceeded to a hole nearby which they began digging up on command from the couple, unearthing a bone less than three inches beneath the rocky soil...

The remains were still decomposing and flesh was still attached to the bone, she noted. The ground, which appeared to have been disturbed by animals, also seemed to have been burned around the shallow hole, further raising their suspicions...

A physical description — the woman’s age, height and weight — were not immediately available. It was also unclear when the body was buried, he added, suggesting the remains could have been there for two years but that it was likely not a decades-old gravesite... The remains are expected to be sent to a forensics laboratory in Texas for additional examination as well as possible identification through a national DNA and dental record database. Investigators are also examining missing persons databases, Hogrefe said.

Buried remains found in the Carson area Christmas Day have been identified as those of a Colorado woman, the Taos County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday (Jan. 19). Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe did not name the woman but said she had ties to Taos.

A preliminary report from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator indicates the woman died of a traumatic wound to the head, Hogrefe told The Taos News. The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate her death as a homicide, he said. Investigators have identified two persons of interest, Hogrefe added.

Authorities in northern New Mexico say a 50-year-old man is wanted in the killing of a woman (33-year-old Roxanne Houston) last summer. Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said an arrest warrant charges Ivan Denning Cales Jr. with first-degree murder.

Hogrefe said Cales is a homeless drifter. The sheriff said he can't release details on the killing until Cales is in custody. Cales is described as 6-foot-2 and about 210 pounds. He reportedly walks with a cane and hunched over sometimes due to back problems.

After nearly four and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found Ivan Dennings Cale, 51, guilty of first degree murder and tampering with evidence after the slaying of 30-year-old Roxanne Houston in June 2014...

Cales was in love with Houston, but when the feeling was not mutual, he killed her, said Gallegos. At the time of her murder, Houston was living with her boyfriend in Taos...

As of Monday a sentencing date was not scheduled, said Gallegos.
