NM NM - Tara Calico, 19, Belen, 20 Sept 1988

I honestly think the photo of the girl and the boy in the van with the stripy cushions is a hoax. For one thing the girl has her hands behind her as if they are tied, but if you look closely I do not think they are tied. I think normally if someones hands are tied they are tied palm to palm, or maybe back to back behind the victims back. In that case when the victim is lying down they will have an odd posture as their back will be raised due to the way their hands are tied. This girl is not at all raised, and her arms look too relaxed to be tied, so I think she has just shoved her hands under her back to make it look like they are tied for the photo. She also looks really ticked off, and the little boy looks like he is leaning into the photo, rather than them both being tired, and frightened. there are also no bruises, their eyes do not look swollen or puffy from crying, they both look healthy too. I also do not see what the point is of the photo. Why take a photo of people you have kidnapped? On the other hand why stage such a weird hoax? It might not even of course have meant to be a hoax - perhaps the two children are siblings with their parents, and after the kids had been rowing or something the parents as a joke put tape on their mouths for a minute and took a photo (hence the sulky look of the girl), and then never came forward as they realised it was in really bad taste. I know that seems far fetched, but you never know. I know I may be very wrong, but there is just something false about the photo.
As for tara. I really hope they find her, this is one of those cases that makes me angry. She was a nice hardworking girl, with a great future and someone stole it from her, and let her loved ones suffer until in her mother's case they died. Its just evil. I think that it was someone fairly local, and she was buried there. I know it is odd that no-one spoke for so long, but look at the huge number of murders and disappearences that remain unsolved. Someone knows what happened in each and everyone of these cases, yet has never spoken.
In the moors murders cases in 1960s Britin I think they sent a plane over the moors to photograph it so they could look for any disturbances, it is a shame they could not have done something similar for Tara in the desert when she disappeared. I hope they find her, she does not deserve to be left in an unmarked grave unknown to those who love her.
I think they are real, however I am not sure they are of the people who they say they are. I don't see any evidence of it being deliberately staged...I could be wrong but I just don't see it. They look a lot like published pictures I have seen that killers have taken of their victims.
THey do look scared and frightened and tired in the picture to me...I see shadows under her eyes. They do NOT look like they are having a good time playing a joke or like they are playing up a joke for the camera by exaggerating their expressions. There is also the eyewitness account that the girl and boy were seen being forced along the beach before the van disappeared. It's not hard evidence of the reality of the pictures, but I don't think it should be discounted yet.

Many perps take photographs of their victims, they get a sadistic thrill out of seeing how powerless they are; they like to relive their crimes and remember what it was like. Many killers have had lots of staged photos of their victims in their possession when arrested, so that is not far-fetched at all to think that someone would not want pictures.
Could it be her? Sure. I can't tell, but a mom may know their child better then I...but of course they could be mistaken too. For the little boy, I don't know if it is possible that it really is the missing boy and later his body was taken back to the locale where he first disappeared. The film manufacturing fell into the time frame that he went missing, and same for Tara. Nothing has been offically ruled out and we may never know for sure who these people were.

I think it would be worth highly publicizing the photos again, as this time after such a long passage of time people who recognize them might come forward.

I think Tara must be somewhere in the area where she disappeared, and again I think if there was a media blitz int he area (billboards with her picture etc), it might cause someone to speak even if only when drunk and feeling guilty. If she is the area it is so sad that she was so close to he rloved ones, yet her mother died without knowing.

Not a Bad idea at all. I wish this would happen.

Hi, I haven't posted to this thread before but the case intrigues me because I live in Albuquerque, not far from Belen where Tara disappeared. I have only lived here since 2006, but I can tell you that I have ONLY ever heard about Tara here on WS, and NEVER anywhere locally. I presume that if I had lived here in 1988 or shortly thereafter, there would have been more discussion of her case in the media or lost posters around or something, but it's not a case I've ever heard discussed here.

It does make me wonder if any of our recent skeletal remains found on the West Mesa (west of the city of Albuquerque) could have a connection to her. I don't think all of those remains have been identified at this point.

I wonder why the police believe that she was hit by boys in a truck?

Where the guys in the van were was on I-40, right where NM 6 intersects I-40. NM 6 ends up in Los Lunas, just above Belen. I was driving and my husband had the seat reclined (he was sleeping) so they didn't know he was in the car. It was terrifying and I remember seeing their faces very clearly. When my husband popped up, they took off instantly. Based on their appearance they were most likely Native Americans and clearly up to no good. They were middle aged, and one had a very flat face. They both looked mean. I remember the van had no windows (other than in the front) and that there were numerous large antenaes on the rear/side of the van. I was young and cute at the time, not a middle aged old lady like I am now. And our car wasn't anything worth stealing; they were clearly just interested in me. I just have always "felt" these could be the same guys.

I have never been on NM 6, but I'm guessing that it is a desolate two-lane and an easy drive to Belen going thru very remote areas. If these were the guys, her body could be anywhere. The area is just so remote.

I completely understand, Sayd, I also had a creepy encounter around Belen, NM.

I lived in Eastern New Mexico for several years before recently moving to the Midwest. My friend and I would spend many weekends exploring the remote corners of New Mexico, discovering abandoned ghost towns and enjoying the quiet desolate beauty of the desert.

One weekend we were traveling from Ruidoso to Albuquerque. Always up for exploring, we took a back road rather than traveling the more direct highway.

One leg of our journey had us on NM55. It was a remote, teeny, tiny two lane highway. We loved these types of roads- up until that day.

We were going to be on NM55 for 20 miles before getting to NM60 which would take us to I25. About 5 miles into the highway, we saw a white pickup truck ahead of us. He was going the same direction we were. We started paying more attention when he stopped his truck sideways in the middle of the highway, blocking both lanes. After a minute, he pulled over and parked off on the left side of the highway- but with his truck facing the direction we were going- he was parked on the wrong side of the road. At the time he pulled over, he was about a mile ahead of us. As we came up on him, we looked over and he stared the whole time we passed by. We thought it was weird and started getting a little nervous. We realized how alone we really were. We had seen no other traffic on that road and we hadn't told our husbands about our 'great idea' to take a detour. We checked our cell phones and neither one had signal- typical for remote New Mexico, but scary given our present situation.

A minute after we passed the truck, he pulled back onto the highway and started following us. He never got too close. He would get to within a few car lengths and then drop back about a mile and then speed up again get close and then drop back. He did this over and over. We were really starting to get nervous. My friend was driving, and increasing our speed, while I frantically checked the map, hoping to find a road that would have more traffic. There was no other road. We had to travel this road to get to the next one.

After about 5 minutes, we saw another pickup truck coming towards us in the opposite lane. He was going very very slowly- maybe 20mph- if that. This pickup was old, beat up and filthy whereas the one behind us was newer looking.

My friend wasn't slowing down for anything. She kept our speed up to almost 80mph (which wasn't typical for us on a 55mph highway). And we blew by the slow, old pick up truck, but not without noticing that he also stared at us the whole time. And he was talking into what had to be a walkie-talkie.

And then he did a U-turn and pulled in behind the white pickup truck.
No doubt these two knew each other. We were being deliberately followed. And for the first- and only time- in my life, I felt 'hunted'.

They stayed behind us. We started watching out for obstacles in the road. We truly thought 'old beat-up pickup guy' had set up a trap in the road and our vehicle would be disabled somehow. We actually talked about driving into the fields (we were in an SUV). But this was obviously 'their territory' and we were afraid of what would happen if we did go 'off road'- and then got stuck somewhere. So, we stayed on the highway.

As we topped a hill, we nearly barreled into another vehicle going our direction. We saw the plates and they said 'US Park Service'. Not sure what to think, we looked behind us. Both pickup trucks did u-turns and went the other way. We followed the park service truck to NM60. We took it to I25 (South of Belen) and went on to Albuquerque.

I don't know exactly what those guys intentions were, but they weren't good. There is something seriously wrong there. I notified the State police, but there was no crime to report. They said they would keep an eye on things.

If anyone cares to google the area, search for 'Mountainair, NM'. That's the easiest way to find where we were on NM55.

NM55 is about 50 miles from Belen, NM. Sayd said her encounter was up on I40, near NM6, which is, again, about 50 miles from Belen, NM.

I'm not an alarmist, or drama queen, but there is something 'bad' going on in that part of New Mexico. Maybe its a big meth lab, maybe is human trafficking, maybe its both, or something completely different.

I do not think Tara was the victim of an accident and buried somewhere. I do not know if the two guys we saw, or the two guys sayd saw, are involved. But I do think that Tara was abducted.

Aura, I'm playing catchup on Websleuths and just now saw your post. Your story scared the living crap out of me. I'm so glad you and your friend were ok. I'm sick thinking of what could have happened if you didn't come upon the park service truck.

Something definitely sounds weird in that area.

I long for resolution in Tara's case.

Thanks for sharing your story, Aura. I am an Albuquerque resident, and I know the general area you described. I don't know what to say. I have lived here since 2006, and to me, this state seems to have more weird and violent crimes than any other place I've lived. The meth trade is a very big problem here and child abuse is so incredibly rampant. My husband has an excellent job with a National Laboratory in the area, and we have a great quality of life. But if we didn't have these good things going for us, I'm not sure we would ever choose to live here. I do think that there is a lot of crime we don't even hear about it, and that there are some very scary people around here. I'm sorry that happened to you. I will definitely keep your story in mind when I am traveling outside of the urban area; I don't do that very often, but your story is chilling and safety is of the utmost importance to me, especially as a parent.

The store where the photo believed to be Tara was found, is about 6 miles down the road from my beach house. I think of her every time I pass that way. Port St Joe is a lovely little fishing/shrimping town of about 4000 people. I know a few people in PSJ & none of the locals I have asked seem aware of the case.

Coincidentally, DeeDee Moore, who was involved in the 2009 mid-state disappearance/murder of Florida Lottery winner Abraham Shakespeare, was from or had lived in Port St Joe. I do not know anyone who ever knew her.

Does anyone know how old this guy is?

Laguna Pueblo is very close to where Tara went missing. Was her bike hit? I've heard it was. Just a thought..

Someone with very similar facial features attempted to deliberately run me off the road (in a car) near Laguna Pueblo in 1989, and my immediate thought was Tara.

See my posts #135 and #137 for more info.

does anyone know when the documentry about tara's case is going to be ready to watch ..i know recently the actor from breaking bad just sighned up to produce or direct it .

According to this website is is said they would start working on it spring of 2012. Not sure how far they have gotten or when it will be released though. It will certainly be interesting.

Here is another synopsis of the documentary with details on the film, and who is to be in it, but still no release date. They do have a run time of 120 minutes set for it, so they should be getting close, I hope!

Tara's case is one of the first i ever remember seeing on tv that got me interested in true crime stuff .On her site it sure sounds like they know who did it but can't arrest them untill they find something to hold up in court i hope they get in to the suspect's in the documentry. I also hate hearing about her parents or her mother and how she passed thinking it is tara in that photo .I thought it was tara in the photograph untill i read that the boy who they said was also in the pic turns out that he was found not far from where he was hunting and more then likely just wondered off and got lost with his father that day so that means its not him in the pic so i don't know just made me think it wasn't her that and what i read about thier being local suspect's...
