NM NM - Tiffany Reid, 16, Shiprock, 17 May 2004

Dreaming of You: Where is Tiffany Reid?

I recently researched and wrote an article on this case. I went through old newspaper archives online and found some "new" information about Tiffany's disappearance including her boyfriend, the rumor mill at her school, and her father. I truly believe this is a case of "someone knows something". I also made sure to link all of the new sources I uncovered. If you're willing to take the time to read, please do so.

Becky Johnson attended the event to remember her aunt, Betty Jean Lee, of Shiprock, who was murdered in 2000.

"So, I go out and I always speak her name because I don't want anybody to forget her name. I don't want anybody to forget what happened to her," Johnson said.

She also spoke about her cousin, Tiffany Reid, who went missing in 2004 on the Navajo Nation, and called on the tribal government to establish positions for victim advocates.

Becky Martinez, right, and Vangie Randall-Shorty talk to state officials during an Indian Affairs Committee meeting on Nov. 29. Tiffany Reid, the sister of one of Martinez’s best friends, went missing from Shiprock in 2004. She was 16. A decade and a half later, Martinez’s brother, Calvin, went missing from Albuquerque.

Details of Disappearance

Tiffany was last seen on her way to classes at Shiprock Northwest High School in Shiprock, New Mexico at 8:20 a.m. on May 17, 2004. She woke up her sister to take her to school, but her sister had worked the night shift the day before and was too tired to get up, so Tiffany left alone.

It was about a ten-minute walk. She never arrived at school and has never been heard from again. She was carrying the usual items she would have taken to school, including a black backpack and a purse with her nickname, "Kay-C", printed on the inside, when she was last seen.

Her mother did not report her missing for a week, as she had run away from home before and always came home on her own. She often didn't come directly home from school, but would keep in touch with her loved ones by phone. Although police classified her as a runaway, Tiffany's sister does not believe she ran away from home when she went missing in May 2004, as she wasn't having an problems in her life.

After her disappearance, Tiffany's makeup bag, purse and library card were found scattered at a well-known party area at the base of the Carrizo Mountains near Sweetwater, Arizona, just over the New Mexico border. Numerous items of clothing were also found in the area, but the clothes could not be identified as hers.

She may still be in the Shiprock or Sweetwater areas, or she may be in Arizona or Mexico. Her mother died in 2019, but her older sister and a cousin are still looking for her. Her case remains unsolved.

The Fall Line Podcast just released an episode about Tiffany's Disappearance.

On the morning of May 17th, 2004, Tiffany Reid left her Shiprock, New Mexico home to make the short walk to Northwest High School. According to school officials, she never made it there—and her family’s search for answers has been complicated by issues with reporting, evidence, and even national database.

Season 21 focuses on family advocates and the effects of the MMIP— missing and murdered Indigenous people— crisis in the United States.
