GUILTY NM - Zakaria Fry, 28, & Eugene 'Carrell' Ray, 70, Albuquerque, 18 Jan 2018 *Arrest*

I don't know how I missed this! I'm so sorry Zakaria and Eugene! May you have peace now.

They went missing six weeks ago. How could the person who found them still see smooth skin or guess gender? That's not possible imo. Something is odd. Were they held somewhere all this time and just killed recently?

That is a REALLY good point. Looking at the temps I don’t think it’s been cold enough to stave off decomp either. I’m not familiar enough with what happens to the hands during decomp but I imagine there would be at least slippage etc. With the amount of blood mentioned found in the house (referenced in earlier article already posted) I just can’t imagine that they survived the attack. I wonder how long those trash bins were out there before they were noticed. The only other thing I can come up with is that in moments of extreme panic or strange events our brains sometimes make us see things that aren’t exactly true - so he may have thought they were smooth etc and didn’t register the reality of what he was seeing.

Neighbors said the bins had been there about a week

Details...sigh.
A little bit different than I remember reading? I thought they were both found in the trash can/bin together?

He and his neighbors watched a trash can — sealed with a ratchet strap — roll around their neighborhood for about a week before he finally decided to take a closer look.

When he pulled off the lid, Montoya discovered a heavy garbage bag surrounded by trash including wet white paint, rags and a rug, he told KRQE.

“I figured it had to be either rocks or a dog ... maybe an animal,” he told the news station. “I had not idea in my mind that it would’ve been a person until I kneeled down and I felt her toes and I felt her fingers.”

A second body was discovered the same day, about five miles north of the first. The details surrounding the second body have not been disclosed.

The environment of New Mexico this time of year and the aridity can lead to extensive mummification, allowing preservation of remains for a LONG time. Remains can retain a fresh appearance for a considerable time in the winter, Bloating of the body usually is present two to seven days following death. But with outdoor exposure and/or cold arid temps the remains are more likely to pass through a long period of dehydration of outer tissues, mummification, and reduction of desiccated tissue. In this environment, exposure of large portions of the skeleton usually does not occur until four to six months after death. Insect activity and carnivores notwithstanding, clothing or covering of the body, substrate, elevation, and latitude can also be contributing factors

I was wondering about mummification as well and took some time to read up on it, was just coming back to update, thank you! I imagine that makes the most sense, and the fact that they were protected from the elements/animals in the trash bins would have kept them well-preserved.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Albuquerque Police Department said they've made an arrest in the double homicide of a 70-year-old man and a 28-year-old transgender woman.

Police arrested 32-year-old Anthony Charles Spiess, charging him with two open counts of murder in the death of Eugene Carrell Ray and Zakaria Fry. According to an arrest warrant, Spiess is also known as James Knight. The arrest warrant also states Spiess faces a tampering with evidence charge.

. . .

Both Fry and Ray, who were roommates, were last heard from on Jan. 18. Family members of Fry have told police they found his room in disarray.

According to a criminal complaint, police found blood splatter in a guest bedroom, bloody towels and hypodermic needles in the home and garage. Police believe the needles are evidence of illicit drug use.

As authorities searched for Fry and Ray, Ray's family learned his credit card was used at a McDonald's and a Walmart for purchases from $80 to $100. There was also small amounts of cell phone data use and a data card purchased, the police report says.

Meanwhile, Spiess had a domestic dispute hearing set for Feb. 13 but did not appear. His sister reportedly said he "recently moved in with two roommates" identified as Fry and Ray.

Police also recovered Ray's abandoned vehicle that had blood splattered and a baseball bat inside. They also found disinfectant spray and duct tape.l

. . .

Both Ray and Fry died from blunt force trauma to the head and face, the criminal complaint states.

Investigators believe Spiess had returned to the home after the murders, finding evidence he did so. Some substances found at the scene matched the substances found at the residence.

Wow that was fast. I’m so glad that they’ve caught him but my goodness, such a sad and gruesome way to go. May they both rest peacefully and their families be comforted with the knowledge their killer has been caught. So sad [emoji20]

In this article they say it was him who was seen in Z's car and using Ray's credit card.

"Police arrested 32-year-old James Knight (also known as Charles Spiess) on Monday. They were able to connect Knight to the murders because he used a stolen credit card of Ray's and was also seen driving Ray's silver Mustang."
