At least 50 people are feared dead in a nightclub fire in the early hours on Sunday morning in the North Macedonian city Kocani. Why the fire started isn't yet known. Up to 1,500 people is said to have attended a concert in the nightclub.

The nightclub/discotheque must have been packed with people if there were 1,500 people there, as the building doesn't look that large from the outside, see
Dozens feared dead in North Macedonian nightclub fire

The club has an Instagram page and there are photos of the act performing on 15 March, and of the club filled with people, probably from earlier evenings.

Brings back the horrible images from the Station Nightclub / Great White show fire in Rhode Island. Pyrotechnics have no place indoors.

Prayers up for the deceased, for the survivors to heal, and for the families to get answers.

From an Italian news source, showing the pyrotechnics, and if you look up, you will see the fire starting on the ceiling.

Now there are 15 people detained, and there are suspicion of bribery and corruption, as the club didn't have a licence to operate. The building was a former carpet warehouse, and there was only one exit. Most of the injured and killed are/were in their late teens/early twenties. The most serious burn victims have been sent to specialist clinics in Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and Turkey for treatment.

This remind me of the Gothenburg discotheque fire in 1998, as it was also in a premises not planned for being a disqotheque, with only one exit, and too many people allowed in. 63 young people died, and 213 injured, 50 seriously, if I remember all of them in their teens. (Although then it was arson, by four boys/young men, angry because they weren't not allowed free entry). I remember seeing some of those who had survived with serious burns when visiting Gothenburg (my mum lived there), and one of the most seriously burned had to stay in hospital for a year. He's now a spokesperson and participates in all 19 'Blodomloppet' a series of exercise races around Sweden to raise awareness for the need of more blood donors.
Translated into English, the story of man seriously burned and his way back:

What a terrible tragedy!! Unfortunately I believe the number of lives lost will increase a lot in the following days.

The scenario brings back painful memories as it’s so similar to the tragedy that struck in my own country 9 years ago when the Colectiv fire took place. 64 lives were lost, more than half of them in the days and weeks after the fire. Both fires were caused by indoor pyrotechnics during concerts taking place in venues converted from old factories to clubs with schetchy or missing authorizations.

It’s gut wrenching watching the news, my heart aches for the victims and their loved ones.
