Freezing rain, snow and rain starts Friday in the Southern Plains before moving into the Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys on Saturday and then heading into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Sunday into Monday.

The system is forecast to be slow-moving, meaning long durations of snow and ice will have time to accumulate.

Winter storm alerts continued to be issued from the Southern Plains across the South and into the Northeast through Monday, affecting more than 177 million people.

Extreme cold temperatures are also a major concern. Friday morning, thermometers in the Minneapolis area were at 21 degrees below zero, with wind chills even colder. Temperatures through the weekend are expected to sink to record lows across parts of the Southern Plains and Mid-Atlantic

Lauryn Martin, a shopper at a Kroger in Texas, told Fox4 that they had been to six stores looking to stock up on items ahead of the storm.

“This is my 6th store I’ve been to today. I started last night but the shelves are all empty,” he said.

I've dragged my knuckles by not stocking propane incase I lose power and I went to several places before getting it at a hardware store. Bread, milk? forget it.

I did my shopping a few days ago. Caught up all the laundry in case the power goes out. We bought a generator that will heat and light one room but I hope we don't have to use it!

I’ve got family in Knoxville and Nashville. I’m dreading it for them all. Luckily I am south of this storm.

It's going to be a brisk 70 -80 degrees in California this weekend. Stay warm everyone!

We are expecting -28C tonight with a windchill of -37C tonight. (-40F =-40 °C )

At least we aren't getting more snow. :/

Why are folks buying frozen food if there is a chance of a power outage?
We do that as hurricane prep. Buy chicken, grill it, put in disposable foil pans. When the power goes out we ice down the food and reheat it on the grill. That way we don’t need power to cook it, just some coals to warm it.

Well, it looks like there might not be any shortage of ice, so the meal plan should work out quite nicely! I hope your power stays on and that you don't get an ice storm.

Sarasota FL is expecting upper 30s on Monday & Tuesday I think. I’ve got my fuzzy slippers ready. I had to put them into service last week too. My “fake fireplace” gets put into service too. I have a small 900 sq ft house but I hate turning on the heat.

I think most of my garden is toast now. I’ll rip it all out and put in a spring garden after the next cold front moves thru. It’s been unseasonably cold here. Imma wimp!

winter veggies: kale, cabbage, broccoli

at least you are not a poor tourist with vaca plans in FL, who thought you could escape the cold, and you need to wear mittens

It never fails, it gets to what we think is cold, and the tourists are swimming in the ocean like it’s the middle of summer.

I remember blizzards as a teen in Pennsylvania and snow drifts above my bedroom windows. So I feel for everyone that’s about to be frigid for days. I have family in Ohio, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Most of them are retired or close to retirement. My one cousin has shoveled his long driveway 3 times this week.

Keep checking on your friends, family, neighbors so everyone survives!
