Some info on shelters
As it relates to the comment "I found at least 10 shelters."
-Please call before going to them. Many waiting lists are very long. (from one of the links below)
- 3600 sheltered
-3900 remain unable to find a bed
with the waiting list long for the 3600 that can find shelter on some nights , I would have to concude the no vacancy sign applies to double that.
-with Nevada experiencing the largest surge of 1,733 more individuals,
It hit me like there are 21,456 seats avaiabile for a concert, while 46,000 are waiting in line.
The notion that there are at least "10" shelters means nothing - My guys had to do it. They line up at like 4 in the afternnon. once capacity hit the rest are left there.
They are thrown out by 9 the next morning (translation they roam the streets ) and have to start cueing up at 4 the next day.
Many have restictions on how many nights one can stay. "Hey Johnny come on, you have been here for 9 nights you know the rules buddy"
Day centers are the opposite (mainly to provide some food) and they close at night - these places don't do the "overnight sheltering".
Both types of facilities are on those lists. Those "ten"are further reduced by gender, if one has a family. They are searched for weapons, drugs , alcohol ( a typical bag if you will, for living on a park bench somewhere.
If they have a horrible 4 days in a row out on the street, and have a "bad" visit they are refused access to that particular setting forever.
If they appear drunk or buzzed they can be denied a bed.
So, if we look at the whole scene, a person who had a bad day at the office, uses substances to soften their existance, need a bed longer than X amount of days, is the wrong gender, not a vetern, or has kids - those "10" options become the one 18 miles away that has 130 beds..................
The notion that a homeless person has purchased a computer, can read, knows how to use the internet to locate this info, and the capacity to "get" there is in reality-- not reality!
the notions the media throws out "there is help out there" are clueless, totally, about how what scarce resources ,that do exist , operate, require etc. IMo only.
I know, becasue I listened to their plights daily.
As a kid she probably had experinced how it really works. The difference being she now has a child, which dwindles options from the "ten" further.
