When I first read this my first thought was the "Slabs" is not a safe place for a young woman. Sure, it might be considered by some in the media as a "haven for some snowbirds, but among the free spirits and warm weather nomads are also squatters, drug addicts, those suffering from mental illnesses, and criminals, many in that group just wanting to be left alone. It's NOT a safe place after dark, for anyone so I couldn't see why she would come here. If someone harmed you, there's a big desert out there, they likely wouldn't find you.

But some history may explain why she may have been drawn there (at least in my opinion) the Onslow Sheriff stating she was homeless. Onslow County Sheriff's Office

If this is the same 33 year old Kelsey Pittman of NC she has had multiple criminal convictions in Wake County District or Superior Court in NC. I'm only summarizing the last 5 years but past charges include Trespassing, drug possesion, fraud, forgery, larceny, felony larceny, breaking and entering, possession of heroin, and obtaining property under false pretenses. Yes, it's CA. A lot of people hear "Death Valley" and think Nevada, but the park is in CA as is Slab City.

Utah is one of those states where free online searches for arrest or court records is pretty much non-existant. If it's a federal case you can get in with Pacer, but you have to have an account with them. If you have a specific case number/county or court name you might find it but most courts even then, require a written request or a visit to the courhouse to view the records in person. But without knowing a county or what LE she was in touch with in Utah, I'd not even try, especially as all we have is a "had contact with" which may not mean any official documentation of that interaction.

Agreed, I know people that haven't spoken to parents and/or siblings for years due to strife in the family. Unfortunately, the number of missing in the US far overwhelms the capacity of law enforcement alone to look for them. California has over 3600 open new missing cases this year so far. If you look at post #2 in the thread, the statement by the Inyo County Sheriff's Office, it seems there must be a place near Death Valley called "Slab City", because it says it's just off highway 190. So a different Slab City from the one east of Salton Sea that folks (including me) assumed was being referred to. Definitely confusing!

Spent the night here, conveniently close to Death Valley, right before you enter the fee area for the National park. There was a short RV, and a few vans parked along the way too and no one had any trouble. There are no signs preventing overnight camping, and seems no one cares. Decent view...
