A 16-year-old girl working at a Nevada McDonald’s was fatally shot on the job on Sunday night, authorities said.

Kylee Leniz was at the drive-thru window of the fast foot restaurant in Elko, Nev., when a gunman shot her through the glass, according to police.

Leniz, a student at Elko High School, was taken to a nearby hospital, but could not be saved, police said.

The suspected shooter, identified by police as 24-year-old Michael Mullis, initially fled. But on Monday he turned himself in to police, authorities said.

He was charged with open murder.

Investigators believe the shooting was random. Police said it does not appear that Leniz and her suspected killer knew each other.

“It is with a heavy heart that we lost one of our Elko employees and are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred,” Chris Kassity, owner-operator of the McDonald’s, told the Elko Daily Free Press in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the employee during this deeply difficult time. We are fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate this tragedy,” he said.

Where do we get these cruel people?
This little girl -- essentially still a child just getting out a bit into the "real world," probably proud of her job and proud to be earning her own money. Now gone while she was just doing her job. At least we have the suspect -- a big break.
Just dammit.

Thanks for the thread, @Silverlink.

Can anything be more tragic and Flippin senseless?

Hard working, beautiful girl doing everything right in life, and she is murdered at the drive thru for no reason?

Her poor friends and family. Nothing, nothing will ever be the same for them.

The Elko District Attorney intends to seek the death penalty in Sunday’s fatal shooting of a young McDonald’s employee, a crime for which police have been unable to establish a motive.

Justin Michael Mullis, 24, of Winnemucca is accused of walking up to the drive-thru window at about 9:30 p.m. and shooting 16-year-old Kylee Leniz, a student at Elko High School.
Mullis was charged Wednesday by District Attorney Tyler Ingram with open murder with the use of a deadly weapon, and concealing or destroying evidence of the commission of a felony.

Police have said Mullis fired one shot from a 9mm handgun and fled the scene on foot. They did not determine any prior connection between Mullis and Leniz.

The complaint accuses Mullis of shooting Leniz and “destroying, altering, erasing, obliterating, and/or concealing items of clothing, and/or apparel, and/or accessories, and/or a duffle bag or similar item(s), and/or a handgun.”

The charge of open murder includes first-degree murder and all lesser offenses. To convict someone of first-degree murder in Nevada, the state must prove deliberation and premeditation.
He is being held without bail in Elko County Jail.

“It is kind of a mystery to all of us why he chose to do that,” Elko Police Department Lt. Mike Palhegyi tells PEOPLE. "He apparently was angry and went to the McDonald's and took his wrath out on this poor, unfortunate 16-year-old lady. He was angry about his life in general. Usually you will have a relationship dispute or robbery, but he just walked up and shot that girl for no reason. It is completely senseless."

Mullis had a connection to the Elko area and had recently come to the area. "He kind of crashes at different people's houses and doesn’t have a home here per se," Palhegyi says.

Justin Mullis, 26, accepted an agreement to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole a couple of hours after a jury found him guilty of first degree murder, willful, deliberate and premediated; and also guilty of concealing or destroying evidence of the commission of a felony, a gross misdemeanor.
