NV - Landlord kills tenants, he did not want to go through eviction process, Las Vegas, Aug 2021

A judge denied bond for an elderly landlord after a prosecutor detailed how the man allegedly shot three tenants for a callous reason, according to The Associated Press. He allegedly wanted to dodge the eviction process over unpaid rent.

The police version of events reportedly describes the suspect’s chillingly joyful behavior amid the killings. Arnoldo Lozano Sanchez, 78, was arrested Tuesday, said cops in Las Vegas, Nevada. Authorities did not name the victims, pending the Clark County Coroner’s Office officially determining their cause and manner of death.

Sanchez is charged with two counts of murder, and one count of attempted murder.

I agree with everything you're saying but, also, landlords are getting mortgage assistance on their rental property and tenants get rental assistance which also goes to landlords, but I'm not sure this guy renting out rooms in his house where he also lives would qualify.

We are not likely to know enough about this gentleman's business position to determine if his business qualified for any of the CARES act support.

Keep in mind that forbearance only means the lender will wait. The borrower still owes the money. 90 days of forbearance? Well, the eviction moratorium began March 27, 2020. Multiple 90 periods have elapsed since then.

The landlord cannot require tenants to apply for any of the rental support programs.

I do not agree with the route this landlord took, but ask again: did no one see violence coming?

So many people were not as lucky, and their lives were shattered, are not able to afford housing. I firmly believe that housing should be a human right, and thus the onus should be on the government to make people whole. Do we expect to make thousands homeless?

As a landlord, it's a risk of the business. These are extraordinary times and there should be some human decency. Everyone has to adapter, including landlords. had the same in Canada, and there was no violence, so no I don't see violence coming.

According to officers, police found a wounded woman in a driveway on the 2000 block of West Chicago Ave, which is north of the Las Vegas Strip. She suffered from gunshot wounds & doctors pronounced her dead at the hospital. The surviving male victim left the residence also suffering from gunshots (shot 9 times). Officers learned Sanchez was still inside the home, but he surrendered without incident, cops said. Investigators said they discovered a second woman dead inside.

We already have thousands homeless in the US.
Investors make more money building another McMansion vacation home than affordable homes for workers, there are government rental subsidies but Section 8 has a waiting list everywhere, usually for years.
Its been so long since government has had programs to encourage investors to build affordable housing that the shortage is dire.
There are no lobbyists on k street funneling money to congresspeople to enact legislation to fix it, which is how things get done our government now under the erroneously named, "Citizens United". (Rich citizens only).
Minimum wage in the US is $7.25 an hour, the argument is that raising wages will hurt business, but if people made a living wage, they would spend it at businesses.
We continue to subsidize the rich through tax loopholes and they pay less for everything, for instance, car insurance is cheaper if you pay a year upfront but only the well off can get these kinds of discounts. Banks largest income is from overdraft fees on the backs of the poor.

As the rich get richer, (they've made billions even during the pandemic), that money is hoarded, it's not circulated into the economy when they make more than they can spend, and more than their heirs will ever be able to spend. Wage earners put all their money back into the economy.
We've been on this "trickle down" path since the 80's, homelessness will only continue to grow as a result.

I take it that you were still paid for your work or were you forced to work with out your wage? Landlords work hard- both the small scale ones and the larger scale ones.

Nobody should be compelled to work for free against their will- not even landlords. I saw violence coming. My guess is that it will happen again.

Well said!

And, the eviction moratorium disrupted the legally binding contract between landlord & tenant. The landlord remains responsible for providing the contracted rental unit -- while the tenant is no longer responsible for their contracted rent payment.

With no definitive solution for those contractually obligated to provide the rental unit.

Not all tenants are paying the landlords, some get money directly. And not all landlords are getting help. Only certain mortgages are giving assistance. Many are selling homes because tenants were there for FREE for over a year.

Of course not, but lets at least get the facts straight. People think Landlords are making out great during this... they are not. Desperate people do desperate things. Not justifying murder, but if squatters took over your property, your house, and legal system wouldn't help, what would you do? Just walk away and say 'ok, you can have it'? Obviously there is more going on with mental health in this situation.
