The timing and place this mother decided to commit this heinous act is quite disturbing. So many young people and families traumatized. I don't claim to understand mental illness but in similar cases, I don't see a complete disregard for others.

IMO, this was an act of revenge meant to hurt people. So so sad. Fly high sweet, Angel.

I think we might all agree on is that this mother was having a crisis of some sort, and in the middle of that she decided that the only solution was this particular course of action.

I don't judge, but I honestly feel crushed by this. Everyone, at one point or another, feels close to the end of their tether. We've had parenting moments that have been difficult; my first marriage, well, that ended with my ex-husband holding his gun and saying he was dirt and wanted to end it all, and I told him -absurdly calmly- to just take the bullets out and put it down on the pillow. He's the ex for a reason...I still (nearly 30 years later) do not trust him for a reason.

Poor child. I always go back to the horror the child must have felt in that split second when the trust is broken. And all the other children who are now experiencing the realization of what has happened... This hurts my heart.

It’s certainly strange and most definitely a selfish act. But then suicide usually has that selfish component. I’ve ridden many a train or subway where there’s a full stop because someone threw themselves onto the tracks. That’s not necessarily a means to hurt people, but does lack the realization or care of inconveniencing others.

DH is a psychologist, and has dealt with several suicides, the kind where they did it in a place where a family member would find them. In that respect, as in this case and the case of train jumpers, I consider the person to be so fully intent on their reason for killing themselves, nothing else enters their mind. Killing her own daughter first, however, is the truly disturbing part of this. Murder/ suicide has many more unknown components than suicide alone.

Las Vegas has used rooms at the Rio as overflow for homeless shelter for people.

I just read the sad outcome here. Mother kills child and self. So common for mothers to kill children. The person who is supposed to be your most trusted person can also be the most deadly.

It was sketchy and odd 25 years ago when I booked a room there, ended up moving us to the Venetian after one night there with my teen daughters
I can’t imagine what it’s like now! We saw a body laying in the driveway of the Stratosphere hotel and a gas station restroom on the strip with blood and needles scattered about.

There's never a reason to take your child's life with yours. I just assume she did not want her ex to have half, or possibly primary, custody.
But you know what? Be the best mom you can be. A child will grow quickly into an adult, and you can go live close to wherever she settles and have a decent life with some nice times together.
You don't harm a child, who deserves to live her full life, to get back at an ex.
