NV NV - Multiple Sets of Human Remains Found in Lake Mead

Even from online photos, it is clear this is a man, I think. It should be interesting to see if this is linked to a known missing person case or not.

Interesting....so in this picture you can see it's a man? You must be a specialist. (don't want to sound nasty, btw) Can you elaborate or post pictures that it's clear this is man.

Poor person.
I hope they weren't still alive when they were put in the barrel :(

I prefer to wait on LE reports...they will know sooner or later.....and much more.

and for the possibility this person was lowered down in the lake....they might have still been living....horrible but we can't know....Legs have been separated from the body...I think it's likely this person was already "gone".

Low water levels reveal body in barrel at Lake Mead, officials say more are likely to be found (abc57.com)
"The lake has drained dramatically over the last 15 years," Spencer said, noting that "it's likely that we will find additional bodies that have been dumped in Lake Mead" as the water level drops more.

"The barrel was likely dropped hundreds of yards off the shore back then," Spencer said, "but that area is now considered the shoreline."

Homicide investigators plan to consult with scientists at the University of Nevada Las Vegas to determine whether the rate of corrosion is consistent with the barrel being in freshwater for that long.
The body underwent an autopsy Monday morning, Spencer says. Autopsy results were not yet available Monday afternoon, according to the Clark County Coroner's office.''

Perspective is everything. Sometimes, photos hide a lot. A forensic photographer often uses a ruler in the photo for scale.

Wondering what kind of personal items, from which they determined the 1980's, could withstand that many years of being underwater? Maybe a watch?

Clothing and belt for sure.

A watch that showed the year.

Swatch watch?
Totally 80's.

How about a Mood Ring? (Guess that was 70s rather than 80s).

I still wear my first Swatch (Sir Swatch 1986) and few other Swatch watches from the 90s... and also my grandparents' wristwatches. So, unless it was a watch with year display, a watch alone cannot determine the exact year the crime was committed. The model and/or serial number can tell us it was on or prior to a specific date, but not an exact time frame the crime occurred.

True. The same goes for loose change, a Walkman, etc. It's possible that the person's wallet with ID cards was in the barrel, though. The expiration dates on charge cards or a driver's license would provide a fairly narrow window of time. People don't normally carry around expired charge cards.

So many families waiting to find out if this is their loved one :(

Police will 'definitely not rule out' the possibility that a skeletal body found in a metal barrel along Lake Mead's receding shoreline on Sunday is the victim of a 1980s [URL='https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/las-vegas/index.html']Las Vegas mob hit.

'It's clear that the person 'died as the result of a homicide,' Lt. Ray Spencer of the Las Vergas Metropolitan Police told the New York Times on Monday.

Lt. Spencer did not why specify why it was obvious the victim was murdered, how they were killed, or any other specifics about them.

Drought reveals human remains in barrel at Lake Mead - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)
''The lake — a lifeline for 25 million people and millions of acres of farmland in California, Arizona, Nevada and Mexico — has been tipping toward crisis amid record temperatures and lower snowpack melt. The lake’s growing “bathtub ring,” formed by mineral deposits, marks the rocky desert slopes more than 150 feet above the retreating shoreline.

“I think anybody can understand there are probably more bodies that have been dumped in Lake Mead, it’s just a matter of, are we able to recover those?” Spencer said.

The water level has receded hundreds of feet over the years, Spencer told The Times; 40 years ago, the current shoreline would have been under 100 feet of water.''

“Most of the body was fully intact, and we have recovered the entire body,” Spencer said. “We’re going to reach out to some experts regarding the corrosion on the barrel and the rate of growth of aquatic life on the surface of the barrel to narrow down a timeline.”
''The legs were separate from the rest of the body, Hollister said, and it was clear that the person was wearing a shirt.''

I do... in case I forget my keys at home, I can open the service door with a CC.

As to the wallet, I don't think there was a wallet with ID cards, or the investigators wouldn't have "to scan missing persons cases from the 1980s to search for clues" as stated in the article.

It must have been something very specific... as someone who loves vintage items and wears/carries them all the time, I can't think of an item that could reveal that kind of information.
