Timing is certainly right. Phoenix is like 4-5 hours from the Hoover Dam though, lots of places to dispose of a body in that kind of distance.

2nd barrel found empty

— While working on the story of the discovery of a barrel that contained human remains at Lake Mead, the 8 News Now I-Team found a second barrel and alerted police.

Boaters discovered the body in the first barrel around 3 p.m. Sunday. The I-Team first reported the discovery on Sunday afternoon and new details about the discovery Monday.

The person, believed to be a man, is suspected to have been murdered in the late-1970s or 1980s, investigators said.


While at the lake Monday, the I-Team noticed a second barrel several hundred feet away from the site of the first — also onshore.

I would guess that while some vintage items are still used/carried today, others are generally not.

For some reason I seem to only be able to pull 70s items from my brain rather than 80s things, but maybe the 80s version of things like really wide and loud-patterned ties, platform shoes, etc.

Leather can last for many, many years underwater, so I'd guess that his shoes and belt could be intact. The brand and size might be readable. Even the Titanic wreck has yielded intact leather. Tanning chemicals often repel bacteria and underwater organisms. Fresh water and the barrel probably played a role in preserving the shirt, along with the other items. The fabric might have polyester or nylon in it, which might not decompose readily. The seal on a water resistant watch can last for years, so a watch - as others have noted - can also survive.

A modern depth finder can see a car pretty clearly. I wonder if the authorities will do some passes with more sophisticated equipment to see what else is there?

I was thinking of looking on the newly exposed shoreline for more barrels like this one, or just bones. That would only take a boat and somebody with binoculars. But using the depth finder is a good idea.

The time frame and area is right for Hyman Wolfe. The Hush Puppies would be identifiable. Not much information on Wolfe is out there - he left his restaurant and was never seen again.

The wreckages of at least two smaller airplanes are also submerged in Lake Mead.[53]

It's probably been long suspected as a body dump site, they just never "worried" about it.

From what I read, it is a source of water for several southern states in the US. Doesn't sound that appealing to me at moment

The article also mentions another man who "was shot in the head six times and his plastic-wrapped body was thrown into a canal." There's no MP report for Vaci, so I believe his body was found.
