LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Red Rock Search and Rescue paused the ground search Friday while trying to locate a 75-year-old hiker on Mount Charleston who was reported missing earlier this week.
The non-profit deployed 39 volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday who covered more than 25 miles of terrain to try and find Rock Stanley. The former marine from Texas was last seen by hikers around the North Loop Trail.
"He has done this trail before and he always makes it home about 6 p.m." Courtney Stanley, Rock’s granddaughter, said. “He's done this so many times and it's never thought, you know, this would happen to him. He's experienced, he's smart. Just was completely unexpected."
She said Stanley visited the mountain once a year for the last 30 years to hike the trails. While he normally walked the trails with a partner, on Tuesday, he decided to go solo. Courtney said some people who saw him noticed he seem disoriented in the morning.
“They said that he was asking people, where are we? Where are you? And just seeming kind of confused,” she added. “They noticed his legs were shaking and she (a hiker) remembers thinking to herself that this is the beginning of the trail, you know, he probably needs to turn back.”
“We do know that he has recently been put on new medication and one of the Rangers brought up to us that the elevation might have cost side effects with his blood pressure medicine.”
While Stanley never returned to The Retreat at Mount Charleston where he and his wife, Karen, are staying, he managed to send a text to his son, Brian, on Tuesday before 9 p.m. that said ‘Lost in woods. Trying to backtrack. Tell Karen.’ Family eventually reached him via phone and spoke with him on Wednesday.
“My brother tried to call my dad and randomly he answered, and it was at 5:20 a.m., local time here 7:20 a.m. Texas time,” Ken Stanley, son of Rock Stanley, said. “He said he's with someone that's helping him and then when they wake up, they're going to take him back to the lodge where we're staying.”
Ken said it’s unknown if Stanley was really with someone or still disoriented on the mountain.
Search crews including LVMPD, National Guard and Civil Air Patrol are helping with the search effort. While crews took a break looking for Stanley on Friday, Stanley’s sons and his grandson, Levi, flew in from Texas and are going off the trails and traversing canyons to try and locate him.
Red Rock Search and Rescue will return to the mountain Saturday at 7 a.m. The family and LVMPD are asking anyone who may have seen Stanley to reach out by calling 702-828-3111 or emailing [email protected].
