I have been MIA for a while-what is the status of the tent and items found and phot'd by the local on the Facebook? And was that the source of the tip to the PI??

gsmith, must have made quite an impression upon Mr. Koecher. First time he's ever talked or met him, but Rolf told him his theory. If he told Naegle, she never said a word to us.

Well there were three other searchers there so it wasn't much of a secret. It was just a theory and nothing more. He sounded like a websleuth analyzing the video and theorizing what Steve was carrying.

His theory is opinion based on things we all know and on his son's past behavior. It corresponds to what I know about Steve and is a simple explanation.

On another note.
Rolf was also saying Steve had a number of empty black folders in his room similar to what Steve was possibly carrying in the video.

I believe we determined that was NOT the source of the tip. It seems some residents in SCA knew about the "squatter" for some time, but didn't say anything. The PI claims the tip for the search came from a trusted colleague, or something like that, and the tip specified that Steven's remains would be found near the airport.

We haven't heard anything new about the tent photos.

This is just my synopsis based on having read the thread and accompanying articles. Nice to have you back Believe09 - your new avatar is a little frightening!

Hi gsmith. We've been wondering about the nature of these folders for some time. Did Rolf describe them for you? Are they the "Duotang" type folder - paper with two pockets (some also have slits for a business card and/or 3-tangs)? These would be ideal for taking and presenting a resume to a prospective employer. Or was it 3-ring style folder? These are a little more bulky and wouldn't make sense for a resume, but maybe for window washing prospecting purposes. TIA

BBM-it adequately expresses my affection for coffee...;)

O/T kind of but isnt that something that residents would know of a squatter for some time but not say anything in the midst of a missing persons investigation???!!! :waitasec: Closed mouthed group of folks...well except for one who came and went earlier on.

Yes, yes, yes...there were dogs at the search. There were three dogs but all three were not cadaver dogs :)

  • #267
So yes or no, there were dogs, lol??

Scent dogs but not cadaver...interesting given the amount of time that has passed since Steven disappeared. Cadaver would have made more sense if they were looking for a body, but I am a civilian who does not handle dogs, so. Hmm.

I have been pondering with the rest of you the statements attributed to Steven's dad about a group being responsible for his disappearance. They are an organized one for sure, or very, very lucky. If someone directed Steven to park in the cul de sac, then I am certain (jmo) they knew of the cameras on the house and their intention was to have his image captured on the video.

I suppose he could have had a disposable/prepaid phone he was using-is there such a thing for a computer as well? What if someone gave him a mini laptop and a wireless card to use??

Maybe you-all have covered all of this already...
Ooop's, Yes to Believe...I think you missed my answer in post#257 :)

No I got it-I was just confused at the dissention concerning it.

Any thoughts on prepaid cell phones being used by Steven or a portable mini-laptop with wireless card? (I dont even know if that is the proper terminology...)

Gosh darn it. I didn't ask. That would make a difference between holding just a resume and a huge catalog of stuff.

I assumed it was the kind without rings that only hold 50 pages or less since he had a number of them.

I think it depends on what you think Steven was doing that day. If he was
there to visit friends or to interview for a job, he would have left his computer at home (as he did) and take his regular cell phone with him.

If you think he was running away to a new life, he may have gotten a
prepaid cell phone and perhaps rented a computer. We do not know how
much money Steven had. Did someone fund his move to another life?

If he was sucked in to some kind of scheme and was not prepared to handle it, then I think he was just using his regular cell phone and again his computer was at home.

During the search my wife talked to a man who either works for the airport or a business in the area. He said he is always seeing people dump junk in that search site. He has to scare them off.

If one were to dump a body there they'd have time to perhaps make a shallow grave but not much more time than that.

One more thing.
I specifically asked the PI if cadaver dogs could be used and he said no.

  • #272
Nope. The PI apparently said a dog could not pick up a scent after about 60 days. So I guess he was talking about scent dogs. They were looking for remains, so why no cadaver dogs?

perhaps the absence of cadaver dogs has to do with the 'quality' of the 'tip'.

it was great theater but if the tip was really good, I think LE would have been involved or the PI would have brought their own cadaver dogs.

Let me add one more thought to this-or his prospective employer gave him a prepaid cell phone and or mini laptop with wireless.

Unless Steven came upon a crime scene himself when he strolled down Evening lights, we need to figure out how someone was communicating with him to get him there. I think we all agree that most everyone communicates via some kind of electronic device, and if his do not show evidence of his activity, well then I like to think he had another one.

Steven doesnt strike me as the kind of person who would have necessarily accepted "be at the corner of Sunset Blvd at 10PM sharp and I will call you at the third phonebooth with instructions..."kwim?

Well the family did not see anything obvious when checking his cell records or his computer....but there has been some discussion that SK may have received his "instructions" in person....from a friend or associate in St. George or actually anywhere as he was all over Utah during the week before he went missing.

We also do not know when he actually arrived in LV....so he may have met someone who guided him to SCA with written instructions...although he is walking with purpose as though he has been there before.

I do think that the timeline is our reference and should be made available.

If there are those who want to start over without the timeline...just don't look...!

If they do not want people in the area of the search, maybe they have more than we know.

  • #276
Yes, there were three dogs at the search but none of them were cadaver dogs...I made it a point to ask each of the owners if they were specifically cadaver dogs.

This is the first I've heard of this. Where are the pics with the dogs?

Where is Lay's timeline?

What's going on folks?

At this point in time anything other than cadaver dogs makes no sense.

This is why I wondered if the squatters camp was the source of the tip; if they thought they had a live Steven, then scent dogs would make sense.

If they thought they were looking for a body, well then I am incredibly confused.

  • #279
It was my understanding they were looking for remains.

  • #280
I am actually confused on why scent dogs were not used in SCA where he walked from his car. And if one was and did not pick up his scent, then I would have tried with a different dog because it is obvious he walked there. I think the ball was dropped on that one.
