I looked up the weather for December 13 and December 14 in the Las Vegas area:

http://www.wunderground.com/history...tml?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA
http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KLAS/2009/12/14/DailyHistory.html

Rainstorms moved through overnight of 12/13 December, but had cleared by noon (look at the link for archive radar if you want to see it). It was blustery (which can be seen in the wavering shadows in the foreground of the security videos). The daytime temperature on the 13th rose to 59F, dropping to 43F overnight. There was a 5-10mph wind parts of the time. The sun set around 4:30pm local time and there was almost no moon (new moon on the 15th).

43F is plenty cold enough for a person to die of hypothermia, depending on conditions. SK doesn't seem to be wearing a very warm coat.

The combination of chilly weather and early darkness make me worry that he went out for a walk to try to clear his head -- maybe walked farther than he intended to -- didn't make it back before dark -- stumbling on that rough ground, turning an ankle or falling into a ditch -- not dressed warm enough and injured... :(

...and that makes me think of something else: why not call for help if you have a cell phone with you?

Does anyone know the answer to this: If you are behind on your cell phone bill, can you receive calls but not make calls? How is your account limited?

The reason I ask, is because I just read a blog by one of Steven's relatives that mentioned his voicemail box was full. The last time he made a call, as far as we know, was the Dec 11th call for the latchkey kids and then the call to voicemail (which would be a free call).

He really wasn't making any calls.
The landlord called; he didn't call back.
Tommy called; he didn't call back.
He was selectively answering, but we don't see him calling out.

Anyone?

That's an interesting thought. I have had a landline frozen like that, but the situation has never arisen with my cell phone.

The most obvious reason to not call for help is that you can't -- maybe you knocked yourself out, maybe you dropped it and can't find it in the dark. Maybe when it starts to get light you find it, fumble with it, press the wrong button -- and then it goes dead.

Sometimes a limitation can be put on a cell. To only receive not send. Usually happens if you are behind in your bill, Family should know if this was the case.

I'll add it to the "next" list. KCN's being quiet right now.

Why would someone on December 14th check Steven's Voice Mail on his cell phone?
And why in Las Vegas?

Does the family have a clue about this?

WHO would have any interest besides him, in his voice mail messages?

Paulette: That's NOT a farfetched question, my husband asked the same thing.

We have seen other cases where a perp has used a cell after someone has went missing, Maybe to throw LE off ?

What question is not far fetched?

...and there's always the simplest possibility that it was Steven himself, checking to see if a certain someone had left him a message.

Or someone found the phone, and checked voicemail to see if the owner had left a message (in hopes that a finder would retrieve the message).

(Apparently, no one here has ever lost a cell phone ;) )

I found one once, but did not check their voicemail. Located the number that said "home" and called it. LOL

This one from Paulette's post:

Could Steven have fallen for a con-job from some kind of predator on his travels in the previous 2 days. I don't want to be blunt about what I'm referring to, hope you can read between the lines. Someone that assured Steven he worked for a newspaper or could get him a client about washing windows?

We have covered just about every scenario , pros and cons of them.

We sure have. But clearly, we're overlooking something. What the heck is it!!!????!!!

It very well could be one of the scenario's we have come up with and we just haven't connected it.

Totally. Any ideas how we can move forward here?

I don't know Fairy1. I think the answer is probably right in front of us on what happened. It is like that saying " I can't see the forest for the trees".

WS brainstormed SCENARIOS

If you look at scenarios 1-5 under "It's NOT Steven"...and eliminate the emotional things like "he wouldn't do that" and "family thinks it's him", you've got 5 very good options.

I wonder if Mr Security would be open to an experiment? If I was LE or the PI, I'd try this:
Get a person of Steven's body type (height, weight, hair color). Dress him in the same kind of clothing we see in the video, have him carry a dark folder under his left arm, and then have him walk the same direction as we see in the Dec 13th security videos.
Then, compare both videos and see how recognizable either is.

I really wonder if this is one of those "we hope it's him because it means he's OK in the video" things.

The thing we keep banging our head on is: "Why would he park THERE?"
Maybe he didn't?

Very good idea. I've always felt like I could not move forward because I've never been convinced it was Steven on that tape.

IMO - even if it IS him in the video (as I believe), it doesn't mean he's ok.

So - are you saying they should be looking for Steven in Utah? What do YOU think?

  • #399
We have Steven in LV with his cell, he talked on his cell and told others he was there. LE would know the vicinity of his last cell ping.

I have to believe family would know if that were him on video.

I have November 1 1979 Amarillo Texas for Steven's date of birth.

If this isn't correct does anyone have the corrected one?

Does anyone have the dob for the roomate? JZ?

Appreciate it.
