My6,
It turns out that Naegle told Laytonian that : there were NO job applications in Steven Koecher's car. It was a reporter's error. I think the one piece of newer useful information was that Steven's father said that the church members would find him employment around the New Year. This would mesh with Steven's statement about being able to make a rent payment in January.
There were, apparently, many job applications in Steven's apartment, but he did not appear to have filled them out (?). But, why would he ? He was going to be employed in a few weeks. IMHO the most he was looking for was maybe a very temporary kind of gig,to get some cash for the holidays. He went outside of his comfort zone ; he had always had help with employment before. I don't think he had a clue about the world of work, what was legit, and what could be trouble.
It's frustrating about the info, but I might do the same thing if a loved one went missing.Anything to keep their name front and center, KWIM ? They(the Koechers) are the ones with a heavy burden right now, not us. JMO

Yes, Early in the case, it was mentioned he had lived in WVC .

I found it! I was looking in news stories, but when I went to Facebook, I saw multiple people reporting that he'd lived in WVC (around 2007). I've already asked Naegle the questions about it, though.

Wonder if Ding got ahold of McKay?

Ding's now inferring she's part of law enforcement, so I'd think with all of that career knowledge, she'd know what to do without asking.

I just heard back from Naegle, after sending the Qs about the job applications.

THERE WERE NO JOB APPLICATIONS FOUND IN THE CAR. It's obviously bad reporting.
We all know there were window washing flyers in the car....and she previously told us that there were UNSENT job applications in his apartment. Quite a few, in fact....but he had never done anything with them.
I think it's safe to assume that the reporter got "applications" and "flyers" mixed up.

CREDIT CARD CHARGES (Exact quote): "Also, the way the internet domain thing was mentioned in the article confused me, and I know about it so I thought I'd clear that up too. A few weeks after Steven disapperaed there were two mysterious charges that showed up in Steven's bank account. We really thought we had something. It turned out that when Steven designed web sites for people he put the domain name charges in his own name. The charges came out of his account automatically so they persisted even though he was missing."

---------------------
It sure would be nice if one reporter followed a case, so they'd have a knowledge base to rely on.

As Naegle just wrote in her email: GRRRRR

(I'm off to see if I can find my first post about the "job apps" and edit it to -- we don't need to be carried off-track by wrong information....and also edit the timeline)

wow, now the whole driving around everywhere is a complete mystery again, isn't it? The potential job applications found in his car answer just went away.

There were a couple mentions in post above of possibility of SK staying in a motel for night. Have to tell you folks, having been there, done that more times than I care to remember, when you buy some peanut butter and a loaf of bread to live on, you don't check into a motel for a night instead of pulling over and catching a nap.

The GoDaddy thing described on cc sounds like a sublet domain thing. What you do is purchase a domain (around $35 or so and then annual renewal for less I believe), then charge for subdomains which is each person's site. I think it would be for very inexperienced people who you provide some handholding for (like creating the web pages for them as mentioned above for additional charge). You also have to pay GoDaddy for the monthly hosting charge and bill your subdomains whatever you can get them to pay.

I believe I saw where you guys explained the cessation of the monthly web hosting charges but they (as many companies that live on cc charges are) are pretty aggressive about billing as in for example this case the annual domain(s) renewals.

I have two domains and my hosting provider asks if I want to renew before billing. But GoDaddy is a lot bigger web hosting company.

ward temple night ( is what she called it )around the 9th of Dec.

This brings something to mind...do we know if Steven had a current temple recommend? And if he had it with him? If he did not have a current one, that would indicate something regarding "behavior". And if he does have one, but didn't take it with him, but did take his passport, then again...very telling about his behavior and what he was thinking.

The link talks about a temple recommend. This is something new to me and perhaps to others. Thank you.

Hey GW if you are out here...or GW's gf, siblings, cousins, friends, aquaintances...THROW us bone or shut us up! What was GW doing in Vegas? Is there someone that can verify his "story" about why he was there? Where did he stay? Did he make it to church? If he called Steven at 8 or 9 something...why didn't he call the other men at that time and say he would or wouldn't be there? How did they "figure out" that GW wasn't going to be at the meeting after the meeting stared? If GW called them and that is why they realized that they needed a substitute in his place, why didn't he tell them he had already talked to Steven????????

A positive or negative answer to any one of these questions, would certainly help put gossip to rest, or heaven forbid, help solve the case.

Being that we can positively identify only one "good" friend that we know, based on pictures of them together nights before (they are in the same frames a few times), at the time he disappeared...and by GW's own admittance, I feel involved or not, here in lies the answer. AND GW is the ONLY picture of someone holding a picture of Steven. I didn't see his family members, or even Naegle for that matter, in such a pose. I am not faulting them...I am saying that GW posed for the photo op and now he his GONE from the investigation, YET is GOOD friend is still not home.

In case the next question has to do with him not being married...men go through the temple before the go on their missions and if they live worthy are able to attend regularly. I wonder if Steven had been visiting the temple. A lot of members, especially during trying times, visit the temple. If he was not, based on the information that his family as provided about his character, etc., I feel like we can safely move forward with suggestions that he was doing things that were not in line with the church. If he was attending the temple, then I would have a harder time believing he had anything sinister going on in his life.

AND maybe all the traveling to Salt Lake and other areas...he was attending temple sessions. That could certainly be a possibility. The church has a barcode system now, so the family would be able to figure that you. Maybe Laytonian could ask Naegle if the family has looked into that. OR first and foremost, if he held a current recommend.

From "How do I know Steven comments "
He had a love for playing the guitar but gave it up because it could ruin his life.

I know Steven from the 26th ward in West Valley City

another knows him when he worked in construction.

another tells of surfing behind a boat and cliff jumping

another talks of seeing him on Dec.9th and commenting to him on how supportive he was

These comments give a glimpse of his personality, would be nice if more commented on the page. I paraphrased all comments.

Your a blessing. The WVC info is there. TY Also note the info regarding the 9th.

I wonder what that person is talking about, who said "about the 9th"? The Temple thing we know about (Christmas lights) was Nov 30th, and there was a Christmas dinner at the wardhouse on Dec 7th. As far as we know, he was in Nevada on the 9th.

Thanks for mentioning that. I'm going over and ask. EDIT: you can't reply in that thread!

So maybe he's a Las Vegas guitar-strumming street musician?
Why would the guitar ruin his life?

Hey Lay, Glad your back.

I think Cindy said it was temple night. ??? Don't know what that is, but is it the same night every week? You can ask Cindy or someone else in that ward the question I guess. I tried to find it on the singles ward website, but didn't see it. Also, looked at the singles site--connections to dating: match.com etc, that go thru the singles ward. I found some for Reno, but nothing for Henderson/LV. They have 3 different sites, with pics of girls (only) Don't know if it's a totally Mormon site or not.???

Where is ONN when you need her.

I had posted on the "musician's" side of life awhile back. Not an easy road, and I would think especially for a Mormon. I would imagine the Osmond's could attest to that.

CONCRND CTZN,
If I may ask : what behaviors would preclude Steven Koecher from having a temple recommend ?

  • #251
I've been reading more of Steven's writings (and I found one that I don't think anyone would have edited a bit of)....and I like your thought about "social intelligence".

How about "a bit naive and not very savvy"?

My daughter and I were eating lunch at Fuddruckers, a block away, when Elizabeth Smart and her kidnappers were found. We didn't notice anything but some cop cars, which are common out on State St in Sandy. You and I. Too far, or too close.

Can your post the writing or the link Lay, I'd like to read it. TIA

If Steven has/had a secret life, I would not guess it from his profile on that social networking site. What an open book he seems... He looks to have no driving ambitions, and presents as being fairly content. Other than looking for a life partner, but he doesn't seem particularly intent even in that area. I know people tend to put their best selves forward on these sites, but if he was a mystery man, he was a very, very, good one. Which is always a possibility.....
Can someone please tell me : is being "endowed" in the temple the same thing as having a temple "recommendation" ?

Did you notice when he filled out the personality type, he put down one thing and then had a , But such and such after them. On every single one.

Endowed means at one time he was in "good standing" or worthy enough to go to the temple and did.

A Temple Recommend is what you are give to let you in the Temple :) Hope that helps some.

So even though he lists himself as an endowed member, does not mean he is still in Good standing, not saying he wasn't just saying, you only get endowed once in most cases.

Basically...but you can be an endowed member of the church and not have a current recommend. Having been a missionary, Steven would be endowed, but that does not mean that he holds a current recommend. I am sure you can find information about this on the web.

This is a very sacred part of our church, and I feel like I should be respectful and limit the discussion on the temple itself. It has very special meaning in my life, which is why I question the role of the temple in Stevens. This is very private information, but I feel it would give us some great insight into his current "lifestyle" if we knew the current status of his recommend and if he had it on his body, or left it in his room. To members of the church, the recommend holds more value than a passport.

Yes, I had noticed that too; hopefully, Naegle can shed some light on who he was living with at the time.

I think Ding (he/she) may be a walking contradiction that likes to play board games.

CONCRNED CITZN,
Thank you so much for that information ; it was very helpul.

Hollyblue,
Yes, I noticed the, in the personality trait list.I didn't read too much into it. He was just trying to present himself as flexible and balanced IMHO. He is/was "young" for his years too, and I would imagine that he's still growing emotionally. His personality probably isn't set in stone just yet.KWIM ?

It seems Steven's sister is talking .

Sister | 10:13 a.m. Feb. 15, 2010Re: Godaddy- It was purchased prior to his disappearance. It is a reoccurring fee that gets charged monthly to his account, which at this point is the only thing happening on his bank accounts.

Re: Scruffy- We are a close family and like the article indicated many of us talked to Steven just a few days before he disappeared. We’ve all gone over and over our last conversations with him and nothing was out of the ordinary or so we thought. Our family isn’t holding back any details. That’s what makes this so difficult… it just doesn’t make sense.
