what did u need explained?

HollyBlue was wondering if two different wards (a few miles apart) would have the same exact schedule for their "ward temple night".

no probably not. Its just that specific ward. There are several wards that share the same buildings, but the activities are separate. Its more likely IF that were to happen, it would be one of the wards they shared the building with.

But I HIGHLY doubt it.

I got interested in Steven's case, due to Susan Powell overload. I have to admit, I have nothing in common with either of them, don't know them, and would probably never meet them.

But Steven's case drew me in because of the "into thin air" aspect, as well as the fascinating details.

BUT, I'VE NOTICED SOMETING ELSE.
I've WATCHED as Susan Powell's friends and fellow church members plan activities every week, and pummel the news media with arguments, swing sets, flyers, a memorial, a foundation, press conferences, "make a blanket" day, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes, I could just scream at the TV when one of the "familiar faces" comes on, saying the same thing. BUT, they're ON and they're working to keep the story alive.

On the other hand:

I've WAITED for Steven Koecher's friends and fellow church members to do some of the same. It's like....silence!
Have they planned any press conferences or staged any "events" on their own?
Not that I've seen.
Have they held a vigil, and invited the press to watch and report?
Not that I've seen.
Have they held a "day of service" like Susan's friends/church members did?
Not that I've seen.
Have any of them stepped forward, with more information?
Not that I've seen.
Have they worked to make sure that the local paper has coverage?
Not that I've seen.
Were there any of Steven's "missing" flyers in the wardhouse?
According to a church member: NO.

WHAT is going on here?

when you bring in an organization as well put together and with enough mystique as the lds church staging a dissappearance isnt as elaborate as one might think.

ive seen the video surveillance house and there are cameras all the way around

i would really like to know how the video popped up and when it became available because i think it surfaced before the formal LE search with the whole dog(no pun) and pony show. the video was just so "convenient" or should i say "too convenient"

wen warren jeffs was caught he was coming from anthem area in henderson, nv and going to ruby valley in northern nevada. what a coincidence how the lds connection surfaces in his situation between the two areas just like SK's

bbm I don't think anyone knew the cameras were there . Just a coincidence.

laytonian and ruby red - sorry about the confusion earlier today (in finding page 2 on the url). My Internet Options had security at high and I was unable to access some functions. Thanks for your patience.

Det McKay with the Henderson PD is the lead detective, and per Naegle, there's an upcoming search (led by LE) soon. There's been no word, though, on when it's going to be conducted....or where.

I hope things haven't stalled, and that they're able to get more basic answers than we are.

Is it possible for us to find out where the previous searches have been conducted?

Any progress on the press conference?

We've previously asked. Naegle had no further description, othr than LE's "desert areas around Henderson". Of course, that doesn't include the trip she went on, when they searched the homeless camps, IHOP, DIs, and the SCA area again.

No word on the presser. They may be waiting for LE to schedule the next search. That'd be good timing, don't you think?

Yeah - I was hoping for something a little more specific. There's a lot of desert around Henderson.

Ya know, I almost have the feeling that Steven's family now seems to feel he may have just taken off. But, if LE is planning another search, they must have reason to believe otherwise.

And of course it would be logical to time the presser in conjunction with the search, just wonder what they're waiting for. Looks like we're in for more rain this weekend.

Probably not this weekend, then.

The search could be for clothing, a cellphone or a portfolio. But yeah, outside other evidence, they're going to look in the area he was last seen in (or from where the phone pinged).

I believe you've mentioned it before, but I'm thinking it would be worthwhile to check the landfills. I hate to say that. The thing is, it's been over 2 months now and the longer they wait, the more difficult it will be. They may at least find his portfolio and whatever was in it. That would likely lead them to where Steven went in SCA.

They probably won't do that, without direct evidence of how he got there (ie, the Jennifer Blagg, Lori Hacking and Somer Thompson cases taught us more than we wanted to know about the subject....like how they GPS/graph the dump areas if it's known that they went in).

I realize that - but it would be helpful to know which way LE is looking. There's going to be a big difference between looking for a suicide victim and a victim of foul play.

I don't think LE is looking in a direction. It's mixed signals, all the way.

All good points, Laytonian.

I followed the Morgan Harrington case closely. She also seemingly disappeared into thin air. There were all sorts of allegations involving her friends at the concert, that she ran away, that she was not even AT the concert, etc. But in any case, right away people started a search, held vigils, passed out fliers, etc. and were doing so until she was found in that field a few weeks ago.

There is definitely a sense that the friends and family of Steven have not kept his name in the news like Morgan’s have. On the other hand, there is something called Missing White Woman Syndrome where the media tends to put more focus on white women missing than any other demographic. And frankly, the better looking the woman, the more attention the missing person case gets.

Having said that, though, and I brought up the issue of his friends a few days ago: Where are they? What are they doing to find him?

But I can see the other side. This was a guy who checked out for periods of time. Driving here. Driving there. Moving to St. George. Avoiding his family at times. I am absolutely sure at one time before Dec. 13, the family probably said that Steven is going to get himself mixed up in something if he does not watch himself. And, Dec. 13 might just be the proof that they were right. So, maybe in their minds, it was inevitable. So, to now get out there and get media attention seems a bit. . .just a teeny weeny bit. . .foolish to them considering they probably predicted it happening. And it very well could be in the back of their minds that 1. They feel guilty that it happened because they now think they could have done more and they don’t want the media attention to possibly expose that side of the story OR 2. They really do believe that Steven is off somewhere doing something crazy because they thought he was crazy for doing all the things that he was doing in the first place before Dec. 13.

It’s just tough to say. I think any parent wants to find out what happened to their son or daughter. But, when the child is off doing seemingly unusual things, sometimes the parents prepare themselves for the worst beforehand. So, when it happens it softens the blow. I think of something like that show The First 48. When the cops tell parents that their perfect son or daughter died, the parents go nuts. . .crying, screaming, yelling, etc. When the cops tell the parents of a druggie or known criminal that their son or daughter is dead, the parents are like, “We knew that was inevitable. We tried to help. . .” And are much more subdued.

To me, the parents and friends of Steven are reacting much more like the latter and not the former. That should tell us something.

I'm just not sure about that.

If you look at the Trevor Morse "investigation" compared to Steven's case, it's like apples and oranges. We're looking at 2 grown men who went missing and nothing (that we know of) points to foul play in either case. Yet the detective assigned to Trevor's case doesn't even return phone calls and in Steven's case, there is (I think) a detective who is pushing forward.

The searches for Steven have been conducted by Henderson PD AND LV Metro. If they've searched the "desert area" around Henderson for Steven, it would be very similar to the "desert area" around where Trevor went missing. Why such different responses to these cases?

We actually don't know if there's much different activity by LE between the two cases. Trevor's dad infers that "Defective Marin" is slow to return the calls (at least in 2008, when he starts the name-calling). Calling someone "defective" because you don't like what they say, and then writing websites about it, isn't going to smooth the path.

Morse's dad says "defective" Marin doesn't return emails.
Well....neither does Morse's dad.

I never could find out if the remains found out by Nellis, were Morse's. The father's blog ends there. But Morse is listed in NAMUS, so I guess not.

Interesting that dental records were never submitted to NAMUS.

That's a security video I'd like to see. Dammit.

Whether the Detective is returning or not returning emails, phone calls, letters, smoke signals, etc. is complete hearsay. Somehow I get the feeling that if we could corner that detective on a sidewalk somewhere and could actually get him to talk about the investigation that he wouldn't say he has been avoiding the Morse family. He'd have his side of the story. The Morse's have their side of the story. . .and then there's the real story. Just like a divorce.

And I know this is the wrong thread to talk about Trevor but I watched Donnie Brasco today. I thought of Trevor at the end when Al Pacino's character cleans out all his pockets from jewelry, money, wallet, rings, etc. because he knows he is on the way to get whacked. Did not Trevor do the same thing? Not saying Trevor was going to get whacked but there ARE reasons people leave ID, money, etc. behind and it usually has to do with not wanting to be ID'd.

Just sayin'. . .

Makes total sense.

Morse called a taxi to take him from his home to Red Rocks, and then was dropped off at the South Town area. We really don't know if he ever went to Red Rocks.

At least in Steven's case, he didn't leave everything behind...except the bigger items he couldn't carry (notebook computer, guitar). Toughie. Headache ;)

Yes - I'm frustrated with both of these cases. I will tell you - I went out to Red Rock Canyon last weekend and in the 35 years I've been here, I have NEVER seen so many people there!

I have worked with one of the investigators in the medical examiners office here in Vegas on a couple of UID cases and he is most definitely on TOP of his game. It's difficult for me to imagine that they would not put 2 & 2 together on a missing person and a UID.
