The PI probably took Steven's picture all around the area asking beat cops, security guards, HOA patrols, etc. if they'd seen this guy, and somebody near the airport said something on the order of, "I saw a guy like that heading out into the desert and he looked distraught." A lot of security guards are retired cops, so having it be someone the PI knows would not be at all surprising.

Re: possibility of suicide -- I think people can slowly slide into a pit of despair, without their family members and friends even realizing how bad off their loved is. Sometimes people hit a set of circumstances that feels insurmountable -- too many things going wrong at once, and they feel like they're at the bottom of a hole they can't get out of. It's a dark, dark place to be. Sometimes people feel like they're not living up to what they expect of themselves and/or what others expect of them. It can feel hopeless. Depression is so insidious too. It can linger and eventually drain a person's soul, even to the point where a person can't think straight. Everything seems hopeless. The most frustrating thing of all is when loved ones can't see or don't recognize what's happening. It can be very hard to discern the level of distress in another person. I look at a young man like Stephen and see so much promise and potential -- and what a solid, good person he seems to be. What a tragedy if he did succomb to a sense of hopelessness and despair. I pray this is not the case. Perhaps he told someone he had been feeling down about his life? Maybe he thought things would work out in his favor in Las Vegas, and he didn't feel like facing his family (?) The thought of foul play is also terrible. I just keep thinking he is the kind of person who would have called family or friends by now if he was able.
Guys - I've been a little bummed out since hearing about the search and I see others here who seem to be feeling the same way. Obviously, if Steven is found tomorrow, it will put an end to any hope he just walked away and started over.
I will be on the search because I am open to all of the possibilities and because I'm here and I can help. But today I still have hope that Steven will not be found in that desert tomorrow.

However, I realized that someone might read my post and not be aware of the prior posts when I brought up BDW so I wanted to make it clear that I was not referencing a real person with the initials BDW. Just being safe Laytonian!
It's a jumbled misquote.
Have you noticed all the "creative writing" in today's news stories about the search? In one, Rolf is quoted that "the chances are slim" that Steven's alive, and in another, "the chances are slim" that he'll be found tomorrow.
It's ridiculous! Is it really so difficult for journalists to check for accuracy? In missing persons cases, it doesn't help.

One memory that keeps haunting me is that of Stephen buying those Christmas presents for his family...obviously he is a kind and thoughtful person -- the type the world doesn't have enough of...
...and it's those misquotes and errors that the aggregators and regurgitators use to create their sensationalized stories.

Unless he was locked out of the apartment and couldn't take them inside, the presents (to me) inside the car seem like his final acts. Like he knew he wasn't coming back.

His driving around and visiting the ranch seemed to me to be acts of saying goodbye. Only thing is that I theorized he was just leaving his life as he knew it, not ending it for good as in suicide.
I've thought about this too, Laytonian. It has occurred to me that those gifts may have been his suicide "note" - so to speak.
I just got another note from a young man who knows Steven. He will also be joining the group tomorrow. he has kept in contact with me for the last weeks, doing what he thought he could do to help.he told me not a day went by, he did not think about Steven, wishing he could do something. He got to know Steven from their ward, and only had wonderful things to say about him. He , on his ow, went through people with criminal backgrounds in the area where sk's car was found. I thought that was great that he did that. He feels as though, Steven was involved with foul play.

I suppose for a fee and no illegal purpose, anyone can do those background checks these days on the internet.
What I fail to grasp is that if Steven was visiting someone in SCA, who unbeknownst to Steven, had a criminal background, and said person killed Steven, why on earth would said person LEAVE THE CAR in SCA so as to draw attention to the neighborhood?
