Just came across this man, missing from Montana during the mid 1980s - not sure if anyone else mentioned him, I didn't see him on your lists above (unless my eyes just missed it!)

On the theory front: I think either the killer(s) or the victim had recently moved to Nevada, probably the Sparks area (paper in car with real estate listings). I think the killing probably happened at the apartment (paint on the blanket) and he was wrapped up and hastily buried, and the car then disposed of. I suspect it was a love triangle of some sort. If the car is involved, it almost has to involve more than one person in the disposal, since the distances are quite long to have walked. I'm not sure whether the car was associated with the victim or with the killer.

And of course I'm probably wrong about all of that :D

So many possible scenarios at this point. The fact that there was a change of clothes that would fit this victim in the vicinity of the remains makes me think the victim may have had a knapsack that was stolen (possibly along with his shoes?)--why else would a spare pair of jeans and underwear (and blanket) be left nearby? (Underwear sz 32-34--matching the elastic strip also found that was probably from a pair the victim was wearing.) That (and the dog, if related) and the fact that this much time has passed keeps me thinking he was 'transient' with knapsack/change of clothes. He may have been the original driver of the abandoned car...but if a transient, I doubt he'd be looking to buy property in Sparks or anywhere.

So maybe he was 1) helping someone drive out (from OK?) to CA/NV who was originally looking for property (ridesharing), or 2) hitch-hiking in the area and was picked up by someone driving that car--an older car, so probably not a rental (they typically sell their rental stock after 3 years of use). It was possibly even bought hurriedly with cash as someone upthread mentioned. Sounds like the car wasn't even properly registered to whoever was driving it. Maybe the perp was the car driver (making it more difficult maybe to drive away if tossing the unwanted sneakers out the window--but not impossible, especially if the road in question was more like a 2-lane hwy).

If the killer was the driver, he could've stopped off the road under the ruse of taking a 'nature break' and then killed the guy who came looking for him to see what was taking so long. (Or, maybe the victim himself needed to take a quick break.) The motive could be robbery (whatever cash, etc., the transient had on him--sounds like no wallet/ID was found). Then perp could dig the shallow grave (with crowbar from car? did he stab him with it as well?), bury him, and take off again, abandoning the car later. Getting back into a car so quickly and so near the site of the remains would then explain why the Stadia shoes were relatively close by (just 1/2 mile away). Curious if there was any site dirt found in the trunk of the car. (As well as other evidence, whether the car was forensically examined, etc. But perhaps too much time had elapsed for that to have been done.)

Poiroitry, someone upthread mentioned the car was reported 5 months before the body was found. At that time, they just had an abandoned car that looked to be hidden on purpose, so they may not have processed the car. Just contact the owner and go from there - no one had info it was related to a murder at the time IIRC.

The shoes aren't a big mystery to me. The ones LE found don't have to be involved. The victim's shoes were likely cut off with his feet and disposed of wherever the hands and feet were discarded. They're probably in a landfill somewhere.

MMarty, I have a question about the blanket. I've seen it described as a moving blanket, or a blanket with paint on it, and I think one place called it a tarp. I'm picturing one of those quilted things you get from the truck rental company for protecting your furniture. Is there any clarification you can make public?

Thanks in advance :)

You can't dig a shallow grave with a crowbar. A shovel would be needed. As a result, we can eliminate last minute planning for disposing of the body. The killer had to think about how to dispose of the body and take a shovel with him to do it.

  • #412
I doubt the shoes are the killer's shoes. A killer who goes to the trouble of removing hands and feet isn't going to leave his own shoes at the body disposal site.

The shoes seem to be unrelated entirely IMO.

Yes, as you described it, it looks like a quilted moving blanket of multi-colors. There is paint "over-spray" and paint drops on one side of the blanket.

did anyone figure out what kind of bird is on the T shirt? I showed it to my Hubby and he immediately said it was a turkey. So I have been looking at Wild Turkey T shirts and bourbon adds. Then I went back to rock star vintage tees and boy I miss my youth. All I want to do is drink Wild Turkey and go to a concert. Anyway is a pic of a turkey sort of in the same pose as the bird on the shirt.

and a hawk...

Me too! When I was searching albums, I wanted to start collecting vinyl!

I've been wondering about the dog. And I was also wondering about the 'blanket' so thanks for the clarification, Mmarty. That leads to a new line of thinking which much more effectively might explain the dog (to me, at least).

A lot of contractors have trucks and many also have dogs (used to guard the truck bed and contents when the contractor is in Home Depot or whatever). Is it possible that the victim was a local painter or independent contractor who'd worked at the killer's home in preparation for it being vacated by the killer? And that the victim's truck was then 'adopted' by the killer after the old car was abandoned?

  • #417
Why was there a shallow grave? Was the body in it at one time? Or was someone interrupted before burial? Did I miss this information?

The only problem with that might be...if the feet were cut off with the shoes, then why were the socks left there?

For all we know, this tall victim may have had cowboy boots that looked like they were worth stealing. So unless we know for sure that the feet and hands were "cut off" it's hard to know what type of perpetrator we're dealing with.

Post 16 mentions the NAMUS site as describing a shallow grave at the site.

A shallow grave implies to me an inadequate tool for digging or inadequate time (or both).
