My first impression of it was that we were looking at the underbelly of some kind of bird of prey, but nothing obvious jumped out at me as far as leg/talons. Somebody previously posted that you can't "unsee" something once you get an image in your head. That's very true.

If necessary, I'll see if we can get a better photo of that shirt after it comes back from the lab (could take several months). I'll pin in down to cardboard or something to keep our fingers out of the picture and to get it perfectly flat.

Thanks again everyone! It would take my partner and I months, if not years, to do this amount of searching if we had to do it alone.

When the t-shirt was recovered, because some of it was around the neck and rt arm, is it possible to tell which end is 'up' on the shirt? Is the orange sun at the top or bottom of the design?

Dental available. Check out this guy's hair. This is a decade earlier but it's possible. btw, I think it's downright silly his family makes a big deal about him adding an extra G at the end of his name.

Can someone be in hiding for 16 years? If it's possible, this guy can do it based on the info in his circumstances. He would have been 55 at the time the body was found. He sounds like he has all the skills to be a drug smuggler to me.

Detectives,

You mentioned to include people missing after the date the body was found. I've been including them if the circumstances seem suspicious or the family reported years later.

What about the ones where it's not clear if the family reported it right away or years later? For example, I have a guy who traveled to Vegas to go to a strip club 4 years after the body was found. Should I include him? It's not clear one way or another if it's certain that's the date or not.

I say go ahead and post it. Better to be safe and get him on our list. I wouldn't call it a high-priority lead at this point, but when the more promising leads start drying up it's good to start checking ones such as this as well. Unfortunately the human-error factor is always present. There is a LOT of data entry to be done in a missing person report. All it takes is one errant key stroke.

Another possible old one. Escape convict. SCARY DUDE. He is from nearby. He would have been 51 to 52 in 1992. Just reading about him freaks me out. Strawberry hair. They think he might have escaped the county, but you never know.

Age Last Seen: 34 to 35
Gender: Male
Race: White
Hair: Strawberry
Eyes: Blue -- sunken eyes
Height: 73 to 75

Dental Not Available/DNA Not Available -- Don't prisons keep dental records?!?!?!

Circumstances:

Eder escaped from California State prison in 1974. Eder was serving a sentence for murdering and disemboweling 4 children and shooting their mother.

Murders were committed when Eder was 16. Eder is originally from New York. EDERs mother lived in Florida at the time of his arrest. Eder possibly has ties to the Berkley, San Francisco, CA area as well as New York, Washington and Florida.

Prior to his arrest he made trips to Tijuana, Mexico to obtain false identification.

Eder may had ties to left wing political groups such as Venceremos, S.D.I., Zapbom, the Symbionese Liberation Army and others who possibly assisted in the escape and helped him flee to Central or South America.

Eder is also second generation German and has skills as a cabinet maker/wood work. Eder hand carved abstract wood figures in prison.

Last seen in Napa County around 1976 using the name John Wehe (phonetic) and possibly "Dennis".

Likely connected with OMG motorcycle gang, white supramacist or anti-government organization.

Crowdsourcing has definite advantages. I have seen amazing things happen as people bring varying degrees of knowledge and talent together here. The thing we have in common is the desire to do something in an effort to help find the missing, give a person back their name, or give a family a sense of closure with finding answers. And most of us like the research involved.

Excellent idea to use cardboard and pins on the t-shirt piece although I hope we have that mystery solved long before several months go by here. If not, you can set it up.

Good to know you do read the posts around here. And no...you can't easily "unsee" some things. Thanks for your input.

Okay. Here he is. Just keep in mind I have been passing up a lot of these guys. I asked you about him because of Las Vegas. If you don't get a match after all these names, another search can be done to find more of these "vague afters."

Apparently, there was a rock radio station called "The Hawk" in Reno. No idea what years.

I'm quickly posting this so it doesn't get lost. I'm heading to bed.

I am not so sure this is all the bird we are seeing. It could be that it is stained and it is covering up some of the line drawing or it is fur over the bird, meaning, could it be carrying something? There are pics on line of a bird of prey carrying off small animals on some of the tees I have seen. Anyway let me know what you think of this image. I put it in Photoshop, changed it to B&W and then messed with exposure.

I see the head now, but I don't want to point it out, because it will be forever in you mind's eye, if I do. If you see it, just post it. I will do some rendering today and post them.

A Mervyn's elastic band from a pair of men's underwear size 32 to 34 was located north of the remains.

Mervyn's? I'm 42 and have lived on the east coast my whole life and never heard of that brand so I googled it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mervyns

"Mervyn's was an American middle scale department store chain based in Hayward, California,"

"In 2006, Mervyn's had 189 stores in 10 states.[2] One year later, Mervyn's had reduced its store count to 177 stores in 7 states. On October 17, 2008, the company announced that it would liquidate its assets through a Chapter 7 filing.[3][4] All remaining locations were closed by December 31 of that year."

I think perhaps finding which ten states had a "Mervyn's" store might be wise.

^^ Just bumping miss muffet's research :)
Taking a break and working on Mervin's. I'd never heard of it. It was a department store based in California. It went out of business in 2008.

In 1978, it was in three states---California and Nevada for certain. The third state at this time is unclear but likely Texas. There was a big expansion starting in 1986--Georgia and Florida were mentioned in this expansion. Georgia and Florida were opened in 1986 and closed in 1997. All other states were opened and closed between 1986 and 2008.

At its peak, it had stores in 10 states. Since there were 16 states mentioned overall, it's difficult to pinpoint which states had stores in the late 80s and early 90s.

But it's clear that the majority of the stores were located in California and Nevada. Next runner up was Texas. Since it was most prevalent in California and Nevada, it seems likely to me that John Doe is from Nevada or California.

I'm listing open and closed dates I've identified for each state I've found mentioned anywhere. This will at least tell us with certainty which 50 states did NOT have Marvin stores.

Arizona (closed 2008)
California (established 1948, expanded 1962-1975, closed 2008)
Colorado (closed all stores 2007)
Florida (opened 1986 - closed 1998)
Georgia (closed 1986 - closed 1998)
Idaho (closed 2008)
Louisiana (closed 2006)
Nevada (closed 2008)
New Mexico (closed 2008)
Michigan (closed 2006)
Minnesota (closed 2005)
Oklahoma (closed 2006)
Oregon (closed 2007)
Texas (closed in 2006 and 2008)
Washington (closed 2007)
Utah (closed 2008)

BBM - because I"ve thought it was yellow all along -

Update....

The good news is we now have a DNA profile entered into CODIS for our John Doe, which is a huge step in the right direction! Unfortunately, we do not have any "hits" on the profile at this time.

We need your help. Attached is a photograph of a piece of a T-shirt. We believe the T-shirt was originally white. We need your help with identifying the design. Does anyone recognize it? Thank you in advance for your time and efforts!

attachment.php

Bringing this forward to make the original easier to find. It took me a long time to find it to send to my friend who is a Photoshop expert and makes his living doing 3D modeling, making music videos for bands, a commercial or two, etc... unfortunately he told me that not only will NONE of the image search engines be useful in all likelihood for this particular endeavor in his 'official' opinion due to an array of reasons, but he also feels that he will not be able to gain anything useful from manipulation outside of the lightening/contrast work we're doing now.

This is frustrating to me but I trust his opinion completely. Doesn't mean that it's not worth continuing to try, but didn't want to sit on that opinion and say nothing. Just take it for what it's worth (to you personally, whomever is reading this) I guess.

^^ Just bumping miss muffet's research :)

oops, I read this entire thread and somehow missed that. Thanks! I wonder if all of their stores carried their own generic/store brand of undergarments, or only the flagship store(s)? I didn't realize they made store brand / generics back then! But I guess Mervyn was bought by Target so in theory anytime we buy Mossimo or Merona, we're buying Mervyn, at least in spirit.

oh well, time to try another angle, for me at least..

I did find this interesting though (from 1998) -

""There is a lot of loyalty in underwear [brands], and it's very difficult to get men to change," explains Dave Slifer, underwear buyer at Mervyn's California, which is limited to two basic underwear labels, Jockey and Hanes, as well as its own Cambridge Classic, a private brand made locally by Los Angeles-based Esportia, an $80-million company that also makes Alfani for Macy's."

http://articles.latimes.com/1998/jul/09/news/ls-1948/2

(O/T - edited to add - that article also says that Jockey makes Tommy Hilfiger brand and Hanes makes Ralph Lauren Polo brand...

"fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Polo Sport Ralph Lauren (which, ironically, are made by Jockey, Warnaco and Hanes, respectively)"

I *knew* they wanted us to just pay for the name while the underlying product was the same!! Can't wait to tell my kid who thinks RL is the best thing ever and I'm a mean mom for not paying for the brandname. hrumph!)

Did you see the black and white I posted just before this? I think the drawing of the bird is in black and white and the contrast is the sun but it may not be that orange due to staining or color fading or changing over time. Also maybe we should be looking up artist that did bird renderings back in the 80 and 90's, instead of trying to find the artwork. Many artist will have art on their website that are not showing up in Google searches. Just another thought. Back to drawing.

Yep I was also wondering who was the go-to guy for bird drawings in the late 70s and through the 80s. I had thought of looking at websites for Audubon and National Geographic as well as the major museums of natural history and perhaps any ornithological societies and/or illustrated textbooks/workbooks/guidebooks from that time. I won't be able to get to those things though, but I'm sure others will if they haven't already.

edited to add: and the Franklin Mint and similar such places might not be a bad idea
