I’m sure red hats will screech bias, but I feel like that’s a pretty good spread as far as age range.

It was also six men and three women.

How Republican women reacted to Trump verdict

The BBC asked Republican women who have voted for the former president in previous elections for their reaction.

His strongest supporters echoed Mr Trump's claim that he is the victim of a witch hunt.

Others said the verdict was further evidence that the party needs to find an alternative in 2024.

Trump is now a legally defined sexual predator – will it affect his 2024 bid?

Verdict was dire for the Republican frontrunner, but more shocking than that was how unshockable the US has become

[...]

There was no chorus of Democrats and Republicans calling for Trump, 76, to drop out of the primary. [...] Nor was there any expectation in the media that Trump is finished. Like road deaths, and to a lesser extent gun deaths, his perpetual scandal machine has become normalised, his peculiar uncanny ability to weather controversies that would sink other politicians now taken for granted. On Monday the Axios website pointed out: “Trump’s weird weapon: Bad news.”

[...]

Amazingly, 18% of respondents who think Trump should be arrested still preferred him to the current president.

Donald Trump is a pathological serial liar. He lies about everything; from his wealth, his health, his height and weight, his inaugural crowd, he even freaking lied that it didn't rain that day.

He lied about how dangerous COVID was, he lied about Hurricane Dorian's track, he lies about physically strong men who always seem to call him sir, while crying about how poorly he's been treated. And most memorably and destructive the lie about the election being stolen.

He's a big, fat liar who has never been familiar with the truth. So it's understandable that he'd lie through his teeth about his interaction with E. Jean Carroll. Most of Trump's lies have either to do with self-aggrandisement or to cover his capacious rear end. He treats people so abominably it's understandable that he forgets the victims he leaves in his wake because he is incapable of normal human emotions like regret and because he's already moved on to his next 'mark'.

I think E. Jean Carroll is a very brave woman who deserves justice from this despicable person and I hope she can live a normal life free from fear of retaliation from his rabid supporters. I hope she doesn't care that she probably will never see a penny that this disgusting man owes her.
You nailed exactly who and what he is-- but shockingly 30 million people
May vote for him for president!

Wait, what? He didn't grow up in Florida.

I lived far away from NY in the late 80s and early 90s and I knew even then that he was a sleazy conman.

He’s owned Mar a Lago for a very, very long time.

Thank you ALL for the updates on this case. I hope you all don't mind that I post this for the last time...

Tuesday, May 9th:
*Trial continues (Day 9)-VERDICT REACHED! (Day 1) (@ 10am ET) - New YorkE. Jean Carrol’s battery (sexual assault/rape), emotional distress & a 2nd act of defamation (for Trump's comments on Truth Social in October) lawsuit against Donald John Trump.
The lawsuit for defamation & under a New York law which allows alleged victims of sexual assault to sue over alleged crimes outside the usual statute of limitations.
Trump lawyers: Joseph Tacopina, Alina Habba & W. Perry Brandt. U.S. District of Manhattan / U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.
Carroll has sued Trump for defamation & for rape, saying Trump turned a friendly encounter at a luxury Manhattan department store in late 1995 or early 1996 into a violent rape.
Trial began on 4/25/23 with jury selection. 9 jurors (6 jurors & 3 alternates) (3 women & 6 men). (see post #108 page 6 for jury info).
Trial ended on 5/9/23.
Charge conference at 9am on 5/8/23. Then summations at 10am Monday, with a shorten lunch & get them done before we are done for the day. The charge will be an hour on Tuesday, 5/9/23 & then the jury will begin deliberations.
Defamation charges postponed by Judge Lewis Kaplan on 3/30/23. Carroll's first defamation lawsuit against Trump was filed in November 2019. But that case has been put on hold while Trump argues that a federal law protects him from being sued for defamation for comments he made while president.

Case info from 2/15/23 thru 4/23/23 & Trial Day 1-8 (4/25-5/4/23, no court on 5/5, 5/8/23) reference post #496 here:
https://www.websleuths.com/forums/t...d-defamation-trial-25-apr-2023.673736/page-25

5/9/23 Tuesday, Trial Day 9: Judge Kaplan read the jury instructions. The jury has the option to return one of several verdicts.
It can find that Trump raped Carroll, who was in the front row of the court on Tuesday. Alternatively, if it does not believe the evidence proves rape, it can find he is responsible for sexual abuse, meaning forcible sexual contact without consent.
If the jurors do not believe either of those findings are applicable, then they can return a verdict of forcible touching, or they can clear Trump. If they find Trump is responsible for sexual abuse in any form, the jurors will also have to assess damages.
The jury began their deliberations at 11:50am ET & ended at ~2:50pm. Total deliberations: ~3 hours.
for more info see posts #498 [pg 25], 524, 530 & 533 [pg 27], here:

On the cusp of jury deliberations, Trump lied on Truth Social that he was “not allowed to speak or defend” himself in Carroll’s civil rape case. In fact, Trump declined multiple attempts to testify live that were offered to him by a federal judge. Exactly one week ago, Trump’s attorney Joe Tacopina informed Senior U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan that his client would not testify live. Tacopina added the next day that the defense would not present any case at all. Even then, Judge Kaplan left the door slightly ajar for Trump to change his mind. The judge gave the former president a deadline of Sunday to request to reopen the defense case, in order to allow Trump to testify. That deadline came & went without any application from Trump’s attorneys.
Trump not guilty of rape. Trump liable (guilty) for sexually abusing Carroll case; $2 million dollars awarded. guilty on battery awarded $2 million. Wonton disgard awarded $280K. Trump's statement was false-yes, actual malice-yes; amount awarded $1 million dollars & reputation repair program awarded $1.7 million dollars; awarded $20K in punitive damages against trump over a claim of battery.

Trump posts series of Truth Social video rants slamming E Jean Carroll verdict

Donald Trump posted a series of video rants on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday night after a Manhattan federal jury found that he sexually abused Elle magazine columnist E Jean Carroll in a dressing room in Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman department store in the 1990s.

The former president went on the defence following the verdict, posting three blistering videos online where he vowed to appeal and continued to claim he doesn’t know who Ms Carroll is.

“The whole thing is a scam,” he fumed.
“We’ll be appealing this decision. It’s a disgrace. I don’t even know who this woman is. I have no idea who she is, where she came from.”

E. Jean Carroll tells @SavannahGuthrie just now on @TODAYshow
she confronted Trump's atty Joe Tacopina after yesterday's verdict : "he came over to congratulate me. He put out his hand, and I said 'he did it and you know it.'"

…everyone from Bette Midler to Jamie Lee Curtis and Stormy Daniels took to social media to react to the news.

The court loss adds to his mounting legal problems, which also include 34 counts of falsifying business records stemming from the hush money payments he made to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election, as well as investigations regarding election fraud in Georgia, the classified documents found in a storage closet at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and more.

Senate Republicans aired concerns Tuesday about former President Trump’s viability in a 2024 presidential election after a civil jury found he had sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll and ordered him to pay her $5 million in damages.

‘The more women accuse him, the better he does’: the meaning and misogyny of the Trump-Carroll case

Being found liable for sexual assault would normally leave your career in tatters. But the cult of Trump means nothing is out of the question

Donald Trump has boasted about grabbing women by the pussy without their consent. He has made innumerable misogynistic comments. He has been accused of sexual misconduct by at least 26 women. He has suggested that some of the women who have accused him of misconduct were too unattractive to assault. And, until this week, he has managed to get away with all of it. Trump has faced no meaningful consequences for his actions; he has given every impression of being above the law.

Until this week. It may have taken decades, but the law has finally caught up with Trump.

[...]

Could the Carroll verdict hurt Trump’s political future? In a sane world, this wouldn’t even be up for debate. In a sane world, having a jury of nine people deliberate for just three hours before finding unanimously that you sexually assaulted a woman and defamed her should end your career. But, as has been demonstrated time and time again, the rules work differently when it comes to Trump. During the trial, Carroll’s attorney Michael Ferrara asked the writer why she didn’t go public with her allegations when Trump first ran for president. “I noticed that the more women who came forward to accuse him, the better he did in the polls,” she said.

[...]

To repeat: a judge warned a jury that they might face violence from Trump supporters. It’s the sort of warning you expect in the trial of a mob boss, not a former president. “These jury instructions show again that he’s not a normal politician – he’s a violent cult leader,” Ben-Ghiat says.

Of course, while Trump may have a cult-like following, he is not omnipotent. The manner in which he is able to spin the Carroll verdict to his followers depends on what media platforms he is given and how journalists challenge his narrative about the trial. The first big test of this will be Wednesday’s live town hall forum on CNN, the first major television event of the 2024 presidential campaign. In a social media post on Tuesday, Trump seemed ambivalent about his big return to primetime. “Could be the beginning of a New & Vibrant CNN, with no more Fake News,” Trump wrote. “Or it could turn into a disaster for all, including me. Let’s see what happens?”

Maybe if he had showed up at the trial, he might have learned "who" E Jean Carroll is.

A brave woman who decided to very publicly reveal "who" Donald Trump is.
I dunno, considering how many women he had "grabbed" in his life, I can absolutely see him not remembering her. It was an event that he forgot about within seconds of walking out of that dressing room. That's about the only thing I believe he is being honest about, he really doesn't remember her. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

In the deposition he was shown a photo of 4 people, himself, his first wife Ivannia, Ms. Carroll and her husband. As we know, he identified Ms Carroll as being Maples (3 times) the woman he had an affair with before and after dumping Ivannia. But remember that he identified the husband of Carroll, going on about how nice the guy was. So this jerk wants us to believe he didn't know who Carroll is, but somehow there is a photo of him, his then wife Ivannia, with the other 2 ppl in the photo being his NEXT wife MM along with EjC's husband?

I think the jury really was swayed by his complete disdain for the accusations, ihis non-appearance in court, while flying to Ireland to play golf.

Let's hope that he signals his disdain and disrespect for all the upcoming trials/accusations coming his way, with the same result: convictions and hopefully incarceration. Remember they finally got Capone on income tax evasion.

I'm not ever going to forget he called immigrants "breeders", him with 3 wives, payments to make affairs go away, dozens of sexual assault accusations and his producing at least 5 known offspring. And the time he said the second generation (born in USA) judge was not capable of being a judge in the USA because of his Hispanic background.

I consider his rascist spiels to be just as bad as his assaults, because it gives ppl free reign to mirror his bigotry and hatred of "others", setting this country back decades.

imo

Trump has no, none, zero, redeeming qualities: nothing offsets the absolute ugliness of his vile, nasty vengeful, mean and nasty personality traits. That people could actually vote for him for president is a very sad and terrible statement of where our country is at this time in history.

Trump was and is a TV addict, so he would have seen her on TV at the time on his friend Roger Ailes's network and Ailes had a talk show that came on right after Carroll's talk show. He knew her then and still does.

Didn't you guys think it was hilarious when he tried insulting EJC's atty during the depo? Telling her he could never be attracted to someone like her.

As though she had been attracted to his spray tanned grossness, and would have hurt feelings.

Now he wants to complain that the attorneys, judge, and jurors are all liberals and he didn't get a fair trial. You know a really good way of having people hear your side of things? Actually showing up to the trial and testifying instead of providing a taped deposition where you are insulting and condescending to everyone. JMO

I had to quote this again. This is what I, too, have felt and screamed from rooftops since those access hollywood tapes came out and he clinched the nomination.

There have been some great posts here and I am really relieved to know I am not alone - I admit, sometimes over my many years here in the threads, I felt like an island, socio-politically. It is a relief to know so many good people do recognize this con job. I don't give the guy much thought and no power to upset me generally, but this trial was just so, so, so far beyond the pale... thanks for the updates and sentiments shared here. Many of us have been in situations assaults so similar to what EJC was in with him that day so long ago. We know it but may never admit it.

ADMIN HAT OFF:

DT is using one of his most prized phrases by referring to this lawsuit and its outcome as a "political witch hunt". It seems he believes if he uses the same terminology over and over again, it will become etched into the minds of his followers. This type of repetition is a mind control technique aimed at a vulnerable public and a pitch that intelligent people should not fall for.

I recall the interview that was done with broker Barbara Corcoran who said he is a "phenomenal salesman". She witnessed his presentation to a group of potential buyers of the Plaza Hotel. He met with them, didn't address the hotel itself, but went into a pitch about the magnificent city of New York and the potential of the surrounding lands. The sale went through while he avoided addressing the issue of the hotel itself.

Thinking back to his blatant campaign statements that certain groups of people were not welcome because they were "rapists"? While this recent finding fell short on that specific allegation, the jurors found on the balance of probabilities that he did commit sexual abuse and defamation. I have to wonder how the jury's finding mesh with his idea of who he is or what is acceptable in the USA and if he realizes this puts him on pretty much equal footing with the same people he categorizes as unacceptable.
