I think this is a phony manifesto. Anyone could slap a fake one online just to cause trouble. I think they were trying to taint support for the LGBT community. JMO

An Uber driver picked up three passengers at the Garden of Eden Marketplace at 162 W. 23rd St., just moments before the explosion several feet away in front of 135 W. 23rd St.

It was not immediately clear what happened to the passengers.

The car was caught in the explosion and heavily damaged.

The driver called police regarding the vehicle's damage. He was advised to bring the car to 39th and Madison where it is being investigated.

The driver is being interviewed by the NYPD. The FBI is also on the scene.

One of the rear windows shattered as the shocked passengers urged him to keep driving.

After driving for a while up Madison Avenue, Alam eventually pulled over near 39th Street and called the police.

“The police told me to park the car and leave it,” he said. “They would come for us, and they did, very quickly.”

The FBI started tearing apart the driver’s side of the car at around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Yes, prepaid phones are untraceable because there's no service contract*. And much cheaper than smart phones in any context - thus older (flip) models are used. The Boston bombers did a few test runs in an abandoned lot, and I'm sure others attempt this type of detonation and thus need cheap throwaway materials. If all that's required is a phone call (ie activating the phone that's left and connected) it doesn't matter what kind of phones are used in terms of smart vs. flip.

Smart phones probably have too much hidden location tracking etc that would make people nervous.

ETA: *untraceable until security footage from the store is reviewed. But so many drug dealers etc buy burner phones from little corner stores who are always SO surprised that their surveillance wasn't working..

I would also think there are less things that could go wrong with a flip phone verses a smartphone JMO.

I'm visiting family in another state right now but yikes, that's incredibly (walkable # of blocks) close to where I live. Hopefully false alarm or a shooting at worst? (having seen police walk arm-in-arm with flashlights recently..)

Interview with the person who found the pressure cooker bomb:

I had just taken maybe 15 steps from my front door, and I saw a pot on the side of the road,” Jane Schreibman said. “It looked weird, and I thought it was a kid’s science experiment, with wires coming out of the pressure cooker every which way. I thought someone was throwing it out.”

Schreibman, who lives on 27th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, left her home around 10.pm., after a friend called to tell her about the blast.

“I had heard the explosion, but I thought it was thunder,” said the travel photographer, who was home at the time. “But I just thought it was going to rain, and I forgot about it.

“The vision of the pot stayed in my mind, and I decided to take another look at this strange object,” Schreibman said.

“It had duct tape, and wires going into the cell phone or remote of some sort. But I couldn’t tell because it was all wrapped up in tape,” the 66-year-old added. “The remote pointed into a white plastic bag.

“They’re always saying if you see something suspicious you should call, so I did.”

LE has key video, clearly shows someones face. Places someone at the scene, holding device, wheeling it. Not public, still very sensitive. 8:02

They see this person wheeling something on 27 th Street, they see him leave the pressure cooker package, then two others probably scavenge the duffel, leave the plastic garbage bag with the device behind. This man stood out to LE because he appeared on video near the 23rd device. 8:01 ish CNN being very cautious thorough reporters on this beat attest to info based on LE sources, Shimon Prokupecz
