GUILTY NY - 30 injured in Manhattan bombing, 17 Sept 2016 *Ahmad Khan Rahimi arrested*

I didn't get the alert. Was it just for the NYC area? I've been in Newark since 7:00 this morning and he was found minutes from here.

Why didn't I get an alert? I have Verizon.

The only alert I received was from the Ocean County Sheriff to be on the lookout for Rahami, and I only get those because I am signed up to receive text alerts.

I just woke up to the news of the Elizabeth NJ. My best friend lives there. I am not usually worried as a NYer. Today, as I get ready to head into the city for work, I have knots in my stomach. I don't get how our mayor can continue to say there is no credible threat. This is a threat. This is not good. I hope those 5 men/women stopped by FBI are the people behind this and that this ends.

He doesn't want to create panic. Stay safe.

Two homeless men found the backpack with the five pipe bombs in the (Elizabeth) Sunday and saved lives by reporting it to police.

The men were also fortunate the bombs did not explode when they discovered the backpack and began carrying it around 8:15 p.m. Sunday. "They were walking with angels. They carried this (backpack) 800 to 1,000 yards before they dropped it."

The men at first thought there was something valuable in the backpack until they saw all the wires inside.

Police are speculating that the bomb maker had discarded the backpack found in Elizabeth to get rid of evidence as he was fleeing the city. One of the bombs inside the backpack detonated as a robot investigated the device.

They used their amber alert/severe warning system, makes sense that that would only be in NY, I would think

At the news conference, they asked for the 2 men who emptied & then took the bag to come forward.

Think they said they have them on video & will be releasing their photos shortly.

Asked them to come forward & consider them witnesses at the moment.

Should just get it over with

Maybe going back to "smart" terorist (not bomb making) occured to me while I was out, that once his pic and name was everywhere, he knew they would be at his house - so he crashed in the place he did.

waiting for darkness??

He could have taken a train from Elizabeth to Linden? I'm not sure how far the station is in Linden to where he was found.

How far apart are those places?

Where could he really go at that point?

Couldn't use his vehicle imo.

All hell could have broken loose (armed) had he bordered any train, bus, etc.

The city and metro area, any exits/entries crawling with obvious LE and prob undercover.

I think he may be lone wolf poss radicalized when left country

If you think about it he had a 90% bomb maker failure rate!

Next stop on New Jersey Transit going south from Elizabeth (the train station where the homeless found the backpack) is Linden.

In Linden, it is a 0.7 mile walk to Merdie's Tavern.

If you go to Merdie's on Google Maps and zoom in, you will see there is a small enclosed vestible before walking directly into the establishment.

I can see him sleeping there for protection (from anyone walking by) and from the rain we received overnight and this morning.

He either took the train, walked on the tracks from Elizabeth to Linden, was driven there, or drove there himself.

Rahami was found sleeping in the entryway of a bar called Merdie's on Elizabeth Avenue. Bar owner Harry Barnes asked Rahami to move because he didn't want him to get injured by some broken glass on the ground. Barnes spoke to Rahami in Spanish, and Rahami answered in English. When the two locked eyes, Barnes recognized the man's face and ran across the street to another business he owns to call 911. When police showed up, Rahami pulled a gun and started shooting. One witness said that the officers were shooting at Rahami as he was running away. The witness said Rahami was shot more than once and was 'still twitching' when he was arrested.

Rahami had a gunshot wound noticeable on his right upper arm. Authorities later revealed that he had also been shot in the leg. As of 1:20pm Monday afternoon, Rahami was undergoing surgery for his injuries.

Neighbors said that the family who live in the building (above the chicken place) had recently changed the way they dressed. One witness said: 'Up until recently they wore regular clothes like us and then they started dressing in their culture's clothes.

On Sunday, law enforcement stopped a car in Brooklyn and apprehended five armed people inside. It's now believed that this group is related to Rahami. They were headed to JFK Airport, but it's unclear whether they planned on carrying out another attack or were trying to flee the country.

Rahami sued his local police force in 2011 for discrimination. The lawsuit claimed that the local police tried to shut down their fried chicken business early every night, even though they have a special license to keep it open late. Ahmad his father Mohammad Sr, 53, and his brother Mohammad, brought the lawsuit together and said that local residents also racially abused them and said: 'Muslims don't belong here'. The lawsuit was filed in 2011 and reveals that Ahmad has a long history of grievances with city officials, their local police force and people who lived close to them. Court records show that the complaint was dismissed with prejudice in 2012, meaning that it could not be brought again. It is not clear if there was a settlement.

BBM. There are comments floating around on social media that the 5 people arrested near the Verrazano Narrows bridge were wearing "middle eastern" or "arabic" clothing, FWIW. Consider it rumor without verification, but it's an interesting "coincidence".

This happens on everyone of these. Its easy for the media to start being blown away that this guy was not on anyones radar.

In hindsight after the blow up stuff, its easy to say he should have been on a watchlist. He went through whatver -- years ago.

Same kinda thing wiht Omar, in that instance they responded, investigated, twice and found nothing. Its almost like they cant win!!

Always a chance I misunderstood, misheard.

Did anyone else hear the same?

IF so, then perhaps, no cache of weapons in vehicle IDK

Linden police said they found Rahami after officers responded to a call of a man sleeping in a hallway of a local business. When a responding officer approached the man, the man raised his head and that’s when the officer recognized him as Rahami.

The suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the officer and striking him in the abdomen. The gentlemen got up and started walking down the street in a westerly direction. I’m told that he was randomly discharging his handgun and one of the officers was able to get close enough to him and return fire.

Rahami was taken to University Hospital in Newark.

Really think want was suicide by cop at that point. He sleeping in an ally. I think he pretty well knew his life was over.

Its hard to imagine anyone beleiving that if you pull out a gun at point blank range, and fire at a cop-- that you are not gonna shot!!

But then again he does no disguise, does not seem to be wearing gloves and makes bombs that dont go bang - so who knows huh!!

As I understand it, the bar owner was watching CNN, they were showing a picture of the suspect, he realized the guy sleeping in the vestibule was the suspect, so he called police.
