GUILTY NY - Annie Li, 2 mos, dies of head trauma, Queens, 22 Oct 2007

  • #21
Was there any external bruising to go along with the broken bones? The witness that has now disappeared said the were no obvious injuries to the child.

Li Hangbin was offered another plea deal after tests proved the child had a condition that would cause bleeding and bones to snap? The DA will still proceed with a trial?

Imo, there are a handful of people who won't back down or walk away from prior mistakes - all of them in LE in one capacity or another. No way they saw the refusal of plea deals coming but they might be seeing a multi-million dollar settlement for this couple that could cause careers to nosedive.

If it's a waiting game, the DA will run out of time first.

The link works fine now, btw.

I gather from the article that many people were living in the dwelling - a boardinghouse? That's what I gather, not what I know.

I was under the impression the apartment building is in a predominantly Chinese area of the city. I've never been to NYC, so I don't know. I just have this picture of a Chinese neighborhood, a Russian neighborhood, a Jewish neighborhood, a Spanish neighborhood, etc. Anyone??? Is that the way it is?
The people in the various apartments in the building were Chinese immigrants.
They were sharing a two bedroom apartment with some woman and her three children. They moved in when Li Ying was pregnant with Annie. It sound like the woman was somewhat of a surrogate grandmother. They looked to her for parenting advice. She's the one they went to immediately when the baby began behaving oddly. They called 911 immediately.

I believe they are innocent. This touches close to home as a good friends son is being railroaded for shaken baby syndrome. Baby is alive thank God but they arrested the father hours after HE called 911 due to his baby girl not breathing or moving. He was not the only one who the child had been left with that day, but he's the one they arrested...crazy. And she had pre existing medical conditions that could have caused it.

I'd like to take a more active part in 'assisting Li Hangbin and Li Ying'. I feel someone in this country owes it to them. They've been thru hell for four years now. They had a right to a speedy trial, didn't they? Can't they get the case thrown out because of the lack of due process?
I'm not haveing much luck finding a phone number or address for Michael Chu.
How about anyone else?

OK, it looks like I screwed up again. It isn't due process, so would someone with a better vocabulary or knowledge of the law tell me the legal wording for 'the right to a speedy trial'? While I'm at it. Sorry about my typos, etc. I hate this computer and it hates me.

The next court date for the Lis case is July 30,2012. They have a different judge. The prosecutors continue to offer plea bargains and they keep getting refused by Li Ying and Li Hangbin. Angela Nianni Li is now 3 1/2 years old.

Glad to see this couple keeps turning down the plea bargains - someday soon they will be giving their own donations to a favorite cause.

You ask can a parent have a child with a fractured leg and skull and not really know?
That isn't the exact injuries, but look at this case:

http://www.rd.com/advice/parenting/parents-wrongly-accused-of-child-abuse/

"A Parent's Worst Nightmare" was in an earlier edition of the Readers Digest, possibly in January 2007. I read the story and was thrilled with the ending. It's one that is not often the case.

Since this article is about the same family several years later, it was suggested this be added to this thread, although it has nothing to do with the Lis or baby Annie.

This is the latest article I could find on this case. Seems jury selection is underway.

http://nojusticeinthejudicialsystem.blogspot.ca/2012/10/queens-couple-accused-of-shaking-their.html

I talked with Michael Chu. He says the trial is to start on Monday. Like you said, they are doing jury selection now. I have asked him to post the latest information on here. Do you know how we go about getting him (the position you refer to when he has personal/inside information on the case) approved?
He said Angela (Nianni) is soon to celebrate her 4th birthday.

Have not gone through the process but start with a mod or the mod for this thread - do not know how to determine who the mod for a particular thread is.

Cool idea - look forward to his posts!

OMG. That poor couple in the article below. I can't believe what happened to them, and how poorly treated she was in foster care.

That RD story-WOW
Has their child been test for the OI disease?

As tempting as it is to believe baby Annie's parents, this one defies belief for me. According to one of the doctors, her skull was basically broken in half.

It may well be (truly) that Annie's parents don't know who battered her, but it appears someone did. In the articles, I don't see any medical professionals defending a thought that ALL of her symptoms could be explained by a nonclotting or osteo syndrome - this isn't a case where they just saw bruising on a retina, OR fractures. She's got it all, whether she has neck injuries or not - she has clear signs of being battered.

Proving who did it might be impossible now.

This child deserves justice as much as any living child. In this case, Annie's parents and baby sister need justice, too. Both of the parents spent more than four years in Rikers Island. The mom only recently made bail. They have NEVER had a trial. They consistently claim to have done nothing to harm Annie. They were offered plea bargains: admit to a lesser charge and they can go free. They refused.

Here is the link to the article in the New York Times:

It's my understanding, which could be incorrect, that the question will be - was the child in fact battered.

This little child lived for 5 days after being taken to hospital, so there has to be tissue or other damage to show the trauma was intentionally inflicted. The investigation took 5 months before an arrest was made so I look forward to hearing the evidence of battery. It seems little is known about the disease the child had.
