NBC News: DNA tests confirm human remains found in Queens, NY are that of missing autistic teen Avonte Oquendo.

I can understand completely why LE would be at her house, questioning her as a witness since she found the remains. I would think that was all routine...but why in the world would they put crime scene tape around her home? That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe the reporter got it wrong?

Could be LE wanted to make sure she didn't take anything from the scene. She did take and post a photo!

That sucks. My daughter was in an Abbott school district 10 yrs ago; they brought in tons of electronics. I have no clue what its like in the last 5 years cause we moved when the economy tanked. My town gets a huge chunk for school from our taxes ($12k yr); the school has cut so much but our taxes still raise. Its disgusting

The communication apps work on 49 dollar tablets from walmart. Gone are the days that PECS output devices cost thousands like the dynavox. Those devices were expensive but today the apps go on phones, iPods, tablets, nintendos, and there is no excuse whatsoever for a non verbal autistic child not to be provided a mutual language method. None. I'm mad. I'm mad at how the school district I'm fighting now for my own son, and I'm mad for Asvonte's family and other families that send their flesh and blood to a facility that places no value on their life, or their education. There is. NO acceptable PUNISHMENT. Autistic brains don't learn cause and effect like typical children. Additional coping skills, COMMUNICATION methods, other skill acquisitions and positive reinforcement are the only effective ways to mitigate self injurious, assaulting behaviors and elopement. Rest in Heaven, Avonte. Your death won't be in vain. I promise you.

Wow, an adult left through that side door and left it open. On the surveillance tape, it was open for 12 minutes before he ran out.
Just heard that on Nancy Grace.

Mark Klass talked about the statistics that 91% of autistic children that run away (bolt) are drowned. It appears Avontes death is consistent with him going into the river near the school and washing ashore in Powells Cove.

I would be curious to see this stat backed up though. Perhaps what he meant was that 91% of autistic children who are killed as a result of bolting, are drowned?

cklI'm sorry, I haven't been "able" yet to read the article re: Avonte's mom and her comments on the underwear (trying to take this in in small doses if possible, know what I mean? ) But just wanted to say before I forget that I'm hoping there were males living in the home with Avonte and Avonte just put on some underwear that day at home that was too big...maybe he grabbed them out of the laundry room...his dad's or brother's or someone's...Also, cloth stretches in the water, does it not? (But, the mom seems to be brand specific though---did any other males live in the house? Could they have worn "Fruit of the Loom"? (ugh, guess I'll have to read that awful article )

(There are some threads here re: disarticulation and water, the feet in Canada, IIRC...)

He prob wore Hanes because they're made different/better then Fruit of the loom. We use Hanes too; usually not from Walmart because the quality lacks there. Same Hanes product but seems to be made with cheaper materials. I assume the tag could be read still which is where they got the size large.

The tidal nature of the East River would almost certainly speed up disarticulation due to movement. Parts of the East River are pretty swift, the current though Hells Gate can be over 5mph at certain tidal times. They don't call it Hell's Gate for nothing, it is a notoriously rough part of the East River.


Not sure about pollution.

I could not have said this any better myself, Keyleigh....
I am falling apart all over again. I can NOT imagine the absolute pain of the Oquendo / Fontaine family at this very moment. It is paralyzing, all-encompasing.... there aren't enough words to describe it. I can't breathe again knowing Avonte is gone forever.....! :'(

That seems most reasonable. By everything I read a lot of people dropped the ball the day he eloped and it would not surprise me that they routinely omit reporting bathroom accidents among other things.
