Drunk + anger management issues, imo.

Eta: (I don't know if there were official findings released as to reason.)

I know it’s irrelevant, but have we ever heard why she shoved this beloved woman to her death?
From my understanding, and in my opinion only, Lauren Pazienza appeared to be an angry person to begin with, and that day she was also drunk and stoned (per her attorney), and just minutes before, kicked out of a park where her and her fiancé had been drinking wine. In a rage, she left the park, cursing her fiancé, and stormed across the street, where Ms. Gustern happened to be with her friend, and I suppose in the path of the angry Pazienza, who apparently pushed the elderly woman out of her way, who fell to the sidewalk, striking her head. That is my understanding and my opinion only.

Yes. I really can't imagine someone who has a rage like this. Just randomly hitting someone on the street? I am particularly interested in the fact that there is an eyewitness, that the victim was walking with a friend, who saw the entire incident. So, the perpetrator can't just say something like she was walking fast, didn't notice the victim, brushed by her, knocking her to the ground.

The victim, herself has given testimony, prior to her death that she had never been hit so hard in her life.

I can't remember how the charges are for the perpetrator...

Ah, manslaughter and assault. The attorney states that LP was so drunk and stoned that she had no capacity for "intent". And that she is not getting off "lightly", as she has been incarcerated at Rikers.

Yes, we predicted this defense months ago. I don't see the "I am a mean drunk" defense working here. And it looks like the attorney wants LP to have "time served" and go home.

15 years sounds harsh, but really, it is a gift. I think LP has a lot of baggage that could come out at a trial.

I thought CCTV caught the whole thing too, including her going into the subway. Can't really dispute it. She did push Gustern, I doubt with intent to kill but she did kill her so now she has to be punished for that. A very sad situation all around.

@MylesMill

UPDATE: Lauren Pazienza is pleading guilty this morning to the charge of Manslaughter in the 1st Degree with agreed upon sentence of 8 years in state prison followed by 5 years post release supervision.

Too bad. I really hoped that the DA would stand firm on the 15 year sentence. Eight years? She will probably get out in less than four years. There are so many programs now to reduce sentences, taking substance abuse classes, anger management.

I predict an early "compassionate leave" after two years. One of her parents will be desperately ill. Of course.

Money wins again.

Nothing is going to bring Gustern back. I seriously hope Pazienza gets serious about getting rehabilitated and understanding that her rage murdered someone. Again, I don't believe she wanted to kill this poor lady, but she needs to wake up and understand that there's blood on her hands and get serious about being a better person.

Seriously, prison isn't going to be any big epiphany for LP. MOO, is that she will spend time there, with all of the other "victims" talking about how unfair it is that they are in prison for "nothing". LP probably already has it in her head that Mrs. Gustern shouldn't have been in her way.

I don't believe any news stories about how people changed in prison. It is just another con. Sociopaths don't change, they just learn and adapt.

Last we heard her fiance was sticking by her. Wonder if he will wait for her for 8 years.

I doubt she'll be there for 8 years.

8 years is not enough for killing a vulnerable 87 year old.

Sentencing and victim impact statements will be Sept 29.

I predict the impact statements will be fierce. She was a beloved person who shared her talents with others. jmo

If he doesn’t, she might commit another murder.

Personally, I would revisit the plan to marry LP. She obviously has anger management, substance abuse, and a myriad of other issues, in addition to being a felon. It isn't worth it. Run.

Agree! Don't wait for this one to be released from prison - move on!

All MOO: Definitely not worth it, but money can be a very strong motivating factor for some people.

The NY Time article on the sentencing references her "then-fiancé" when describing her crime. I'm not sure if that means that they've broken up or if the Times is just hedging their bet because they don't know the current status of the relationship.
