Police in New York City are investigating the death of a three-year-old girl who was found unresponsive on Monday while in the care of her stepfather.

Bella Edwards was rushed to St John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, where it was determined that the toddler had signs of trauma consistent with physical abuse, according to the NYPD.

Edwards was left with her stepfather, who was the only adult in the sixth-floor apartment. A three-month-old baby, believed to be Bella's brother, was also present and was later taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Another young child left in the care of a step-parent, now dead. I'm sickened. Another beautiful little one.

Why are they always so beautiful and sweet-looking (as all children are), why is it (nearly) always the stepfather or boyfriend, and why does the mom trust the stepfather/boyfriend to care for them while she's away?

Just dammit.

Often it’s the case of a stepmother or stepfather. It seems like since the child is not mine I’ll abuse them syndrome has just gotten worse and worse. It’s happening so frequently. Families are splitting up more and more and we need for people to take more care in watching out for their children in today’s world. I was going to say in today’s NORM but it scares me.

Does income play a role in the mom leaving the young child with the boyfriend/step-dad? Child care is expensive and it may be that is the only choice for some mothers. They leave the kiddo with the BF so they can work. It doesn't excuse the outcome, but may explain "why".

It reminds me of when new male lions come in and take over a pride and kill all the cubs that aren't theirs. There really should be research done on this.

I think that oftentimes the "sitter" doesn't want to care for the child when mom leaves -- and yes, sometimes that child is "not mine," and the baby or child cries or whiles and won't stop, or the "sitter" molests the baby/child and then tries to destroy the "evidence." Yes, a crying baby can be irritating to some people, and slapping, shaking, or putting one's hand over the child's mouth only makes it worse, I'm sure. So he/she does whatever it takes to stop the crying. Simple and simply horrible.

One more angel in a place already with too many. We "know" and remember some of them. SMH

Gonzalez returned to her 6th floor Rockaway home on Beach 105th Street – with her mom — to find her daughter lying unconscious on the bed just before 6 p.m. Monday, according to cops. Sources said that the toddler’s body showed signs of abuse and trauma.

“She was definitely abused,” a law enforcement source said. “The baby is a victim of sexual abuse.”

The toddler’s death is being investigated by the NYPD Special Victims Division.

My God! The father found out on FACEBOOK! The mother didn't even contact him. Her real dad finds out his daughter is dead on facebook!
A Brooklyn father discovered his young daughter died on Facebook, two days after the child's stepdad allegedly abused her before she took her last breath.

Three-year-old Bella Edwards was pronounced dead on Monday. Police say the child appeared to have been both physically and sexually abused.

Her furious and upset biological father, Kellon Edwards, 35, revealed his ex-partner and mother to Bella, Shamika Gonzalez, failed to inform him about the horrific incident and he found out via Facebook on Wednesday, he told the New York Post.

'I didn't hear anything from [Gonzalez] until 7am today,' Edwards said, after his mother saw a Facebook post and first informed him.

This area isn’t cheap. Well nothing in NYC is. But there’s MUCH more affordable places in the area. This overlooks the ocean and is in a commuter friendly part of town. I’m suspecting daycare weren’t the concern or reason for leaving the child with him. JMO. And I’m only speculating because of the listing prices found online for apartments in the area.

I've thought this, too. Humans can have more animal-like behavior than is comfortable to acknowledge.

Not positive where it's at but I honestly believe someone in the LUCAS HERNANDEZ case has and continues to work on a HUGE project/spreadsheet of just this sort.

If one is low income, there are state funded daycares if you’re working. IMO there are a lot of people who don’t take advantage of this because they don’t want more government or mandated reporters in their lives... of course some people are just too proud to accept help.

Fly high beautiful Bella[emoji174]

Is this couple, the mom and the "step-dad" actually married or is the media just calling him the step-dad? They have different last names. Many times in cases like this, it is later found that the Step parent is actually a boyfriend or girlfriend.

ETA: This article calls him the 'boyfriend'

"A police source told WPIX that Edwards' body showed signs of trauma consistent with abuse. The source said that she was covered in bruises, had new injuries and several old injuries that were healing, and there were signs of sexual abuse."

Just my two cents worth here but it is clear to me that the abuse had been going on for a long, long time. FGS, I do not want to hear that the other two adults in that home were totally clueless.

Way too many dead children lately.

as a step mother, I can say that I do not love my step kids the same as my own. I do love them, care for them, want the best for them and love kids in general though. maybe these ppl are lacking somewhere, in general compassion or idk what.

to add. the fact she was sexually abused points me that was the motive. if someone "snaps" and beats a kid to death in frustration, that is totally different than molesting them.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce believes the child bled to death internally after being brutally beaten near her abdomen.

BBM above caught my attention. He brutally beat her 'near' her abdomen. Could he have been beating her near her genitals to try and hide the sexual abuse? Maybe so.
