Right, but what exactly is this dismissal? I guess I can wait for coverage, but I've somehow lost my way on this case.

You can't try a dead person, so they're dismissing the case.

So if the victims want to go after the estate for $, it needs to be a new case. Do I have that right?

I don't know if there are any pending civil cases right now. But, yes, the can only proceed in civil court now. And if there is no pending civil case, then it would need to be a new one.

I bet that the Duke of York will be going on a long vacation soon. Some place that has no extradition to the United States.
Extradition is not a problem for him. The Queen of England is his mother. Nobody could ever extradite him...

In the past few years, multiple women have come forward to accuse Jeffrey Epstein of sexually abusing them in his alleged child-sex-trafficking ring. Now a chilling new report from the New York Times turns its focus toward “the sisters who first tried to take [him] down” in the late ’90s: Maria and Annie Farmer, whose repeated attempts to speak out about Epstein’s alleged behavior fell on deaf ears. On Monday, at long last, the women were given the opportunity to detail the physical and psychological abuse they claim they suffered at the hands of Epstein and his alleged madame, Ghislaine Maxwell. Their accounts are as disturbing as expected.

‘Historic’ day as victims of Jeffrey Epstein will get to testify Tuesday
In what one lawyer called ”a historic day for crime victims in America,” more than a dozen women — and perhaps as many as three dozen — who were sexually abused by sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein are expected to testify in a New York courtroom, giving them a voice that they were deprived of by federal prosecutors more than a decade ago when they were abused by him as teenagers.

The hearing, before U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman, will mark the first time many of the victims will be able to speak about the betrayal they’ve felt at the hands of federal prosecutors, who gave Epstein a secret plea deal in 2008. It’s also the first time that they are able to talk about the financier’s death in a federal prison two weeks ago.

I really didn’t get why the judge continued the hearing since JE is dead, other than a venting session for his victims.

To be clear, I do understand and sympathize with the victims BUT continuing the hearing didn’t seem to serve a “legal” purpose, nor could the courts pursue anything (ie compensation for the victims) by having this hearing.

This ABC story somewhat explains that things have changed under the Crime Victims Rights Act. Makes sense to me.

n Manhattan federal court where the judge is set to hear from victims of Jeffrey Epstein. There are three and a half rows of women with their attorneys in court. Judge Richard Berman is on the bench.

Judge is calling upon victims counsel for any remarks they wish to make and to introduce their clients who wish to be heard. 14 women have stood up.

Epstein's victims arrive at court to speak out at dramatic hearing | Daily Mail Online
  • As many as 30 women will speak on Tuesday at the hearing in Manhattan before the case is closed
  • Some have been named, some have not and many plan to sue Epstein's estate for damages
  • Four unidentified women arrived with lawyer Gloria Allred who say her clients plan to sue the late pedophile
  • Virginia Roberts, who sued Epstein in 2015 and claims she had sex with Prince Andrew, was also at the hearing
  • Epstein killed himself in jail earlier this month before having to face trial for human trafficking charges
  • Now, the criminal case against him is likely to be closed without anyone being sentenced for the crimes
  • Victims want authorities to bring charges against anyone who helped him carry out the abuse
  • They also plan to sue his $577million estate which he left to his brother, Mark, in his will

I honestly don't understand this either. The media will get photos of the victims, which the public will eat up (oogling them, imo). Reporters will get stories.

And the system take the attitude of, "There. Now the victims got their day in court. Case over. Go home."

Yes, I'm feeling cynical about all of this.

I can't see the article because of a paywall, but there is what I assume similar coverage on NYPost and I think one article about this will suffice for me.

Honestly, I think this was a bad idea. It's like letter after letter to Playboy or something - salacious details with no real point. Some statements didn't seem that well formed and were rather unprofessional.

I think the girls (now women) were put on parade and once again used for the pleasure of others. :(

Again, I'm sorry I feel this way. I'm on their side. I just don't think this was in their benefit.

Hope I am wrong and people will be outraged rather than idly curious.

Chauntae Davies, who was recruited to be a masseuse for Epstein, graphically described being raped by Epstein over a period of several years, and how in his death she felt a sense of loss.

“It took me a long time to come forward,” Davies said. “Every public humiliation that I endured, I have suffered, and he has won.”
...
Courtney Wild, who alleges Epstein sexually abused her when she was 14 years old, told the courtroom that the financier’s death in federal custody had “robbed myself and all of the other victims” of a chance to confront him in court.

“For that, he is a coward,” Wild said. “I feel very angry, sad. And justice has never been served in this case.”
