I searched NamUs for males missing from Erie Co, NY from 1992-2002. I came across Daniel Greishaw's profile. He went missing from the Riverside Section of Buffalo in June'02 while supposedly wearing jeans, t-shirt, and brown boots. Doe was found (Aug'02) with jeans, t-shirt and brown DuraShock shoes. Doe's profile states he was decomposing but only weighed an estimated 45 pounds. He's also estimated to be 5'9" tall, so I'd assume teen-adult age range. Daniel was 41-Y-O when he disappeared. His clothes, height (5'8") and weight (170#) make me wonder whether these are his remains. Would 2 months (June - Aug) worth of decomp be enough time to lose approx. 125 pounds w/all parts recovered?

I'm undecided whether to call the tip line tomorrow to submit Daniel as a potential match. I would hope they've already excluded him, but ya never know. Any thoughts?

I spoke with James McClure, Medicolegal Death Investigator, @ Erie County ME's Office. We discussed the particulars of JD and Daniel's cases. He checked his records and determined that JD's dentals are on file but he didn't see any dental records in Daniel's NamUs profile. Dental records will be the only way to ID JD at this point considering there was no way to obtain his fingerprints due to decomp and they hadn't collected a DNA sample prior to his burial. Apparently they didn't start taking samples until around 2008 (I think that's the year he mentioned). Unfortunately the funeral home who processed JD's remains is now closed, so he may not be able to gain access to any records they may have had. The detective (Leo McGrath) assigned to Daniel's case retired years ago. Mr. McClure will contact Buffalo PD's homicide and MP units to determine who is handling Daniel's cold case. His hope is that Daniel's dental records will be stored away in his MP casefile or investigators will be able to get ahold of his dentals from a family member or dentist (highly unlikely, imo).

Not surprisingly, there is a lot of investigative work that will have to be done to determine whether Daniel is a match to these remains. The best case scenario is that someone somewhere will have Daniel's dental records. The worst case scenario is the case will remain unresolved until/unless JD's remains are exhumed for DNA sampling. Mr. McClure didn't sound very optimistic when I asked how likely he thought that would happen.

I'll report back if/when I receive any updates.

The ME confirmed 45lbs is not a typo. Apparently JD was highly decomposed.

Strange as Leo McGrath contacted me in Dec 2021 & asked if it was okay to have a Detective call me regarding a cold case Jane Doe scenario. He didn’t identify as a Detective himself but the Detective I spoke to was referring to him as if he were still active within their office. Just a mere observation.

Namus used to list who had been excluded and Greishaw was never excluded so I knew it was almost certainly him. I don't need credit but I wish they could have connected the dots sooner for the family's sake.
I wish I had actually tried harder to get in touch with someone on the phone. I just barraged their socials and scoured for their emails and called once.

Buffalo Police reopen unsolved cold case

Yes I've checked every now and then since June 2019 to see if they followed up on my suggested match but never got any results until I did it the other day and saw the match had been made in November. I'm supposed to speak with the Chief of Detectives about this. I want to make sure tips from Doe Network, Websleuths, etc. are being taken seriously. It seems they are nowadays but when I started doing this in the 20-teens not so much. Anyhow, I'm glad I found Websleuths. I didn't know the site existed.
