Newburgh police Det. Joe Rutigliano told Newsday that police "have no idea" why the abduction report was made and wouldn't speculate on whether the children or their parents were committing a hoax. He said police would not consider charges or other action against the parents or children involved.

"We did our due diligence," Rutigliano said. "We don't want to get anyone in trouble, based on the ages of the kids."

:banghead:

I don't think they should be charged, but they should get at least some form of punishment. I bet their parents aren't too thrilled with them right now.

How about some type of community service? Something??? I shudder to think that if these kids got away with this, what else they may decide to try and "get away with"!!

They didnt just lie to police about a broken window at the school....I mean what would possess 5-11 yr old to make this up???? Something still isn't sitting well

My guess is one came up with the idea and either talked the rest into it, or had the others believe it really happened so they went along with it.

Take them to the police station and give them a tour of a jail cell with the door shut. Scare the bejeezus out of them.

Kids that age don't understand the real consequences of actions like that. Now would be a good time to show them. I can't do much but chuckle about it. Kids do the dumbest things. Hopefully they're made to understand how wrong it was and will think a little more before they act next time they want to pull a prank.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Those little....:banghead:

But on a lighter note thank GOD there was no abduction!!!:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

I am such a cynic...I never believed this story for an instant.

WTH? This is so wrong. I realize they're kids but wonder why they have to make up such a horrific story about a child being kidnapped? We have this case and then Isa's case where the young girls called 911 to say they were Isa.

Are kids that bored? Where are the parents? Is this what kids do for fun nowadays? :what:

Hear that?

Every Hispanic landscaper in NJ and it's bordering states with a black truck just gave a collective sigh of relief!

Kids. . .:banghead:

I think they should have to be volunteers for a missing child organization and pass out fliers for at least one entire year.

If I had done that my father would have probably talked the local LE into taking me down and having me processed and locked up for a few hours before he came to "bail" me out. LE would have abided back in the 50's and 60's. Mayberry justice. I would wait a few days and make up an elaborate story telling my child someone told me they saw them doing "something" and then assign punishment of some kind.....probably grounded and privileges taken away for a week or more. Then at the end tell them the truth with a lecture and have them write a letter of apology to the PD. Trouble is, most parents aren't around their children long enough because of work to follow thru on the punishment. If I was the parents I'd be mortified. IMO

Right. Parents are supposedly responsible for their children until they reach the majority. Parents have been fined and even convicted for their children's truancy but when kids falsify an abduction - costing untold resources then....nothing?

I think at some point there needs to be accountability so we don't keep seeing this happen time and again. JMO

A parent too lazy to get their kid off to school and this situation are two totally different things. Unless the parents knew they were lying, I don't think there should be charges. We hear about everything these days. Look at how many people we hear being kidnapped. We hear about it and talk about it. The kids overhear it. It's all hype to them.

This is what kids do. It's part of growing up. They do all kinds of stupid chit and (hopefully) learn from it. If they have the proper guidance at home, they'll learn to think first.

I agree. As infuriating as the waste of resources and the worry are, kids that age lie. Sometimes they tell elaborate lies. And it doesn't always mean they are going to grow up to be an axe murderer.

When my brother was in kindergarten, he told the teacher he was hungry because my mom tied him to a dining room chair and didn't feed him. UNREAL! Not even in the realm of possibility. Luckily the teacher knew my mom and gave her a heads up about little Pinnochio. Brat. But he's 37 now and never been in trouble in his life...not to mention painfully honest. He has no idea why he said that.

And when I was teaching first grade, I had a kid who told huge lies to get attention. He told me his best friend fell out of a tree and died. I called the mom to offer my condolences, and she told me that he was going through a "whoppers" phase and apologized. That kid is now 24, a great guy, and still embarrassed by that story.

It's usually for attention, and then it gets beyond the point where they don't know how to dial it back and admit they made it up.

I wouldn't be surprised if one kid made it up and the others piled on saying that they saw it too.

Sounds like LE handled it exactly right and hopefully these kids will learn their lesson about making stuff up.

When I was 8, I called 911 at 2am and reported a fire in our townhouse and hung up. I got back in my bed because there was no smoke, I was just reporting the fire....the pilot light on the gas heater. About 5 minutes later, several police and fire trucks arrived and woke my parents up. Trust me, I learned my lesson. I hope these kids learn as well. I learned my lesson before my parents spoke a word. All those cops and firemen scared me... Only because there were so many and the sirens were so loud- they were all very nice to me but explained why the way I hung up before giving them more information was wrong and how they were all concerned rushing to a house they thought was on fire with a child inside. I'm definitely still ashamed of it.

I do hope that the parents explain to their children how serious what they did was. They cannot just shrug this off. I have read way too many stories about families BEGGING LE to take them seriously about a person being missing. Hoaxes may make the next missing persons report be put off, not taken seriously.

I kind of figured hoax. But, if had to choose, I would pick lying kids over abducted girl, so I guess I'm good.
