i disagree.

first of all, who is to say that this woman wasn't crazily in love with some well-to-do guy who died when she became pregnant, forcing her to take whatever she could
who's to say that she didn't have money and a good home when she got pregnant? things happen. people die, people get laid off, people get kicked out of their parents home with nowhere to go.
how can you say she was in a "cycle of poverty" when she chose to have this baby?
and btw, i guess you'd rather she had murdered her unborn child? or just gotten sterilized when she moved?
who is to say that this woman was lazy, or didn't work? she might have worked TWO jobs to save up enough money to move. it is expensive...deposits, transferring utilities, paying movers...what if she was trying her best and just didn't quite have the money yet?
who is to say she couldn't feed and clothe her baby?
and you CAN be blissfully happy and not have a lot of money. material things are not what makes a child happy, LOVE is. ok, it might have been a bad rat problem, but that baby may have been snuggled constantly, fed and bathed and always had clean clothes and a clean place to play. how can you say she did not provide a good life? at least that baby was loved enough to be protected.
to college....i supported myself through college. i worked and got grants. i took a full course load, and graduated a two year program in less than 18 months. it's hard, but it can be done without a college fund.
speaking of degrees, i'm in a menial job, too. i have a nursing degree, and used to be a flight nurse. currently??? i'm working from home doing insurance sales. why? to be with my kids. and you know what? i'm in the "middle income" tax bracket...not lower income, not poverty level...and what i'm doing? convicted felons can do. you DON'T have to have a college degree to make good money. look at salespeople, look at some telemarketers, look at department store and restaurant managers, geez

ugh
sorry, i usually just post links and don't get into discussions, but some opinions on here really stink

Perhaps you could use some help with reading comprehension?

No one said the mother was lazy or didn't work. Please go back and read. It is hard to have a discussion with someone who is missing the boat.

Do some research on what people with college degrees and in skilled trades earn compared with those who not.

It's obvious, if you open your eyes, read, and comprehend.

This child is not having a "good life" and I doubt this sad mother is "blissfully happy."

Geez, talk about a broken record.

Again, where in the article does it state the person in question wanted her kids to go to college?

I'm not being sarcastic at all, but I am talking about lower income people. Kids can live at home, work part time, and go to school practically free on Pell Grants if they are lower income. Of course that might mean settling for a community college then transferring to a University for the last 2 years which would cost more. I've known lots of people who go on Pell Grants and work part time. Some programs will even pay for everything if a person wants to go into nursing which is a good profession.

Uh oh.

Vicki, my post was not aimed at you, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Someone keeps bringing college up when nowhere in the article did it state the mother wanted her child to go to college.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen but it's not just... walk into college, get free money, and get your degree.

I've been there and done that.

Perhaps you can enlighten me, why more poor youngesters don't take advantage of this golden opportunity?

a neighbor says:

"I've known Gladys for 10 years and she's one of the best moms around here," Robles' neighbor Susan Walker told WCBS. "She cares for her children so much. She does everything. They always have the best of everything, the best care."

Robles' neighbors came to her defense, saying leaving a baby alone in a crib was too risky.

“I can't blame her,” said Analys Cedeno. “She didn't want the boy to get bit.”

It doesn't. The child was suffocated by his mother while she was attempting to protect him from rats. I think a college degree was the last thing on her mind.

Have you ever heard of Maslow's hierarchry of needs?

1) Physiological: hunger, thirst, bodily comforts, etc.;

2) Safety/security: out of danger;

3) Belonginess and Love: affiliate with others, be accepted; and

4) Esteem: to achieve, be competent, gain approval and recognition.

5) Cognitive: to know, to understand, and explore;

6) Aesthetic: symmetry, order, and beauty;

7) Self-actualization: to find self-fulfillment and realize one's potential; and

8) Self-transcendence: to connect to something beyond the ego or to help others find self-fulfillment and realize their potential.

This poor woman was at #2, trying to keep her child safe. I'm sure when you are trying to protect your baby from rats, a college degree is far from thought.

If the child was bit, a CPS referral would have been made for neglect.

Why do you think that is?

He didn't get bit because she wasn't neglecting him.

perhaps you can use some help with tact and courtesy?

maybe i misinterpreted (not didn't comprehend), when YOU said, and i quote
"I don't "look down" on people who do those types of work. I look down on those too lazy to work."
i just thought since YOU brought it up, you were implying that this mother was too lazy, after all, that's what this thread is about, right?

and um, maybe YOU should research? degreed teachers, police officers, paramedics don't usually make as much as say TOPLESS DANCERS, or top of the line car salesmen, or even managers of target. i made a hell of a lot more doing APPOINTMENT SETTING than i made even as a flight nurse.

i feel really sad for you. you think you know everything, and that everyone who doesn't agree with you has "missed the boat", or "has reading comprehension problems". the narrowmindedness, judgmentmental attitude and rudeness you display are a testament to the life YOU live.

if you want people to "open their eyes", "read" and "comprehend", maybe you should do the same to people whose views are different from yours. if you want respect, you have to give respect.

oh, and maybe you should take your own advice. i don't think i ever said this mother was blissfully happy

I don't know any statistics on who is going where or when, but many people are making use of Pell Grants or they wouldn't even have them available. Maybe there is info or data available online. I was only replying to your post about how could this mother afford school if she couldn't get out of an apartment with rats. I was responding that school is possible for the child even if the mother is low income, if they want to try, not that everyone is even interested in a degree. Some can make pretty good money without one or be happy with less material things.

just to give a basic idea of how much of the world is living in a 'cycle of poverty', here's a map (although not all countries are listed):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Percentage_population_living_on_less_than_1_dollar_day.png

so, boyzmomee.. since men and women should not procreate until they are in an "ideal" situation (i assume you are talking about ALL people-- not just this woman),, what do you propose should be done? should all women making under a certain amount a year, with no college degree, without a privileged upbringing, be sterilized? what about the men, should they be castrated? because people are going to bring children into situations of poverty, like it or not.. and they have been for.. oh, about the past 5-8 million years (or, a few thousand, if you're a christian fundie! LOL)
so tell me.. what exactly, is the proper amount for a person to be making per year, in order to be endowed with the privilege of having a child? what type of degree should one have?

i sure hope you are supporting your local family planning clinic and pro-choice groups.. because if you TRULY believe that women under a certain "means" should NOT be having babies, (which means- they should not be having sex-- and you know people are going to have sex!!) then i sure hope believe in easy access to birth control options for everyone, and surely you must be pro-choice. you need to give women that option... especially the poor ones. if not, then i wouldn't hesitate to being out the word "hypocrite" here.

Boyzmomee---How did you pay for your college and what are you degreed in, if I may be so bold as to ask????

Hire a crew to live in your house 24/7 to deal with them..for months. I wish. It is really a nightmare.
I am here to tell you they are murder to get rid of. Most of our community would have to move their families out if they couldn't live in their homes while they were battling rats. You have to be there, because they like to do their thing when you are not there.

But it is doable because we did it. My family is fine too.:)
'
ETA: They generally like to stay in the walls when you are around. It's not like they are at the dinner table with you or anything.:eek:
But at night you just cannot be sure and that is why I would have had the baby with me also.

This poor lady!

No offense intended, but I learned of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs while I was in college, paid for, free, by Pell Grants, an SEOG grant, and a work force program, lol. But, you're right. The mother wasn't thinking of college at that time and it sounds like she did take good care of her kids and probably couldn't just up and move. The landlord should have controlled the rats in the building.
