This isn't him. Dave had beautiful blue/grey eyes with long dark blonde hair. The age doesn't match either.

It says unknown eye color. And by all accounts I have seen, his hair was brown. Unless you knew him personally and know otherwise.

friend I understand what you feel it has happened to me with several cases here you can feel the anguish of these people who somehow seek to disappear and be born again in other better circumstances but the mind betrays perhaps he committed suicide he did not tell anyone he threw himself into someone remote river or the sea.. you have to be brave to do that.. but he may be living his new life away from everyone... whatever it is, rest in peace

There are a few John Does recently entered into NAMUS that were found in Manhattan.

1- Manhattan John Doe #UP123278- June 19, 1984
This John Doe had a brown hair, and a goatee/moustache and he also had a short sleeve blue striped shirt.

2- Manhattan John Doe UP123279 - July 31, 1984
This John Doe also had brown hair, he had tan pants, and blue/grey(possibly green) socks no mention as to whether they were striped or not.

I know the heights are off; however, I think we have all learned that those are not always reliable; even if it states "measured". For some reason, every time I review this UP I match him up to David Thies in my mind. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

I went to school with Dave. He had blue/grey eyes and brown hair.

I noticed that too. I figure it is worth a shot due to the person's location compared to where he lived.
